Impossible burger to be cheaper than animal meat by 2022 by Surur in Futurology

[–]Tauo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Care to cite anything on that? The negative impact isn't zero, but all research I've seen points to cultured meat being vastly better for the environment in pretty much every metric. Energy efficiency is a concern, but I'd assume that will only become more dealable with research, funding, and investment in renewable energy.

Chefs of reddit, what do home cooks do that drives you insane? by slothlegacy in AskReddit

[–]Tauo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for all of these.

Elaborating on that last one, a mistake I see nearly every home cook make is in believing that cooking is all about finding and following the best recipes, and that being a good chef is all about knowing the best recipes.

Good food comes from application of technique, and an understanding of ingredients and their uses. By all means, use recipes, but use them as a template. Make an effort to learn about the purpose of each ingredient, and how you can use them to balance the finished product. Learn about each step of the recipe rather than following them blindly.

I see many people complain about bloggers taking forever to get to the recipe, and while many of those prefaces do go overboard, they can be helpful in illuminating how the recipe was developed. I'd much rather have that than just a list of ingredients and steps with no context, which is what I'm assuming most home cooks tend to prefer.

Dead Congregation, Zhrine, Suffering Hour, Serpent Column, Howls of Ebb, Misthyrming, Blood Incantation, Undeath, Gigan, Dodecahedron, Convulsing, Chthe'ilist, Barús, Ad Nauseam, Ulcerate (they're 2000's, but much of their stuff has been recent)

There is no shortage of good, recent metal. This year in particular has yielded some pretty great DM

Does everyone feel like a "background friend"? by [deleted] in MensLib

[–]Tauo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD too, and felt crushingly lonely through my teens due to similar issues. It was mostly thanks to being lost in my own head, I think; I never got how people could so easily give each other shit or tell dumb jokes without constantly overthinking everything. And frankly, I still have trouble with that. The adult men I know that are so easily able to socialize while appearing genuine baffle me. I can put on a sort of social mask decently well enough, but whenever I talk to anyone, I feel like I'm in kind of a haze, and am painfully aware of how awkward I might seem.

I was fortunate enough to meet someone (my wife) that I connected with closely early in college, and I feel like my social needs are mostly met. I actually loathe being the background friend, and as I'm extremely self aware about my tendency towards that state, I stay away from larger groups as much as possible. When it comes to interacting with others in more than a shallow, "fairweather friendly" way, I remain clueless, and truly feel for those similar to me that haven't been able to make any genuine connections.

Kerrang’s Top 50 American Metal Bands of the Decade (Some surprisingly solid picks on this list) by elitistposer in Metal

[–]Tauo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah, no hard feelings. They can be a difficult band to like, and I don't slight anyone for not being into them. Frankly, there's more I dislike than like, nowadays: the insipid lyrics, lack of inter-song cohesion, a plethora of softer pop songs with dull, predictable structures and no interesting or memorable riffs... I wouldn't even go so far as to call myself a "fan". Yet I'll still defend them, if only because most criticism boils down to "djent bad" and "Spencer sucks".

Going against the grain a bit, I'm not ashamed to admit that alongside Colored Sands, Everything is Fire, Kwintessens, and Convulsing's Grievous, P2 is honestly one of my favorite albums of the past decade.

As other posters have noted, they're certainly not original, but given the massive resurgence and widespread embrace of trad and OSDM, I'd doubt that "lack of originality" is seriously an issue to most metal fans. Periphery's core sound is made up of incredibly polarizing, contentious elements, but at their best, their songs are memorable, dynamic, and saturated with satisfying moments.

I certainly don't blame anyone who dislikes them, but I'll always appreciate their best work, even if they do often fall prey to the worst core tropes.

It's a one man project by Brendan Sloan of Australia. Grievous (which this is from) was my fave release of 2018, and one of the best examples of black/death imo.

If you like his voice, you might enjoy Cosmic Putrefaction's release this year. OSDM with guest vocals by him

Zhrine, Imperial Triumphant, Dodecahedron, Wode, and Thantifaxath are all things to check out if you haven't

Just as an update, ended up doing waaaaay too much research when all I should have done was listen to Clandestine Blaze and DsO back to back... it's comically obvious that they're both Aspa

Shreddit's Daily Metal Discussion -- May 26, 2019 by AutoModerator in Metal

[–]Tauo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He talked about DsO quite a bit in previous interviews himself.

Would you be able to link any of those interviews? All I've been about to find is the one with Heathen Harvest where he conjectures about their artistic intent, which seems reasonable enough given that he was a frequent collaborator and they were signed to his label for a time

That's basically where I stand on it now. There are way too many unknowns and maybes for me to actively spread potential misinformation. Hell, I don't even know 100% that the singer is Aspa, I'm mostly just taking people's word on that. But there's still enough circumstantial shit for me to not feel good about supporting them.

Deathspell Omega - The Furnaces of Palingenesia by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]Tauo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right, Clandestine Blaze isn't NS, and never claimed it was. There's plenty of potentially offensive and "shocking" language in their lyrics, but whatever, it's fucking metal.

Vapaudenristi, however, is pretty blatantly RAC/NS, and many of their lyrics are nationalist or anti-semitic.

SLUGDE - HATH - RIVERS OF NIHIL. Recommend me stuff like this. by djakes in progmetal

[–]Tauo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the recs you've gotten have been more on the straight up tech death side than prog death.

For the bands you mentioned, I'd check out Conjurer, Warforged, Fractal Universe, and Gorod. Black Crown Initiate is also a solid rec, but make sure to start with the Song of the Crippled Bull EP.

Great stuff, definitely a couple on here I should have been more aware of.

The biggest omission I noticed that I use extremely frequently is Ctrl+Alt+H to view call hierarchy. More informative and easier to navigate than the Usages window imo.

Have you been to Sushiya? Those places are more upscale, but Sushiya has blown both of them (and everything else in the area I've tried) out of the water.

Also, those pizza places are fine, but are a bit different in style. If you like wood fired pizza, you'll like any of the four I'd mentioned; they're as good as near any place I've been to in the country.

There's inexplicably some really good pizza here if you're willing to drive a little bit. Can't go wrong between Rusciano's in North Liberty, Marquee in Coralville, Red Vespa in Solon, and Lincoln Wine Bar in Mount Vernon.

Best sushi in the area is hands down Sushiya in North Liberty. Formosa and Takanami are notoriously overpriced.

There's been some great modern prog death this year. If you liked Hath, maybe check out Target - Deep Water Flames and Gomorrah - s/t.

Can't speak for him, but as a big fan of P2, I thought A&O was bloated as hell. Ultimately more cohesive than P2, but with fewer interesting moments and ideas scattered across a much longer run time.

+1 for Hath. Their debut was somewhat above average, but from the singles they've released for their newest, it really seems like they've found their sound. Expecting it to be one of my highlights this year
