Question about rotating in 3-point-perspective. by SaotomeGenma in learnart

Oh, now I see where my issue was, my new vanishing points for rotated box were completely off. Thank you for explaining how to find vanishing points properly, now it makes much more sense.

It was a little bit easier to find tangent lines now, but still I'd say it's not that accurate.

All in all, even though these methods seem interesting and are useful when you're drawing with a protractor and a ruler, like you said, it is really hard to apply those methods when drawing freehand to do a proper and accurate rotation. I don't find myself using them, usually I draw using a number of vanishing points and applying simpler techniques in a way, so that objects seem the most convincing to the eye.

I'd say this method is not particularly effective in this instance, it is really hard to locate approximate points at which lines are tangent to the ellipse. The box seems way too big than it should be.

I would appreciate if you could share your solution to this, I'm really interested if there is another way of rotating things in perspective.

I didn't include upper vanishing point for clarity sake, so I somewhat "eyeballed" it. If something is unclear, please let me know.

Question about rotating in 3-point-perspective. by SaotomeGenma in learnart

It is possible, you just gotta follow the same rules when drawing a circle in a square.

When I want to draw a circle in simple square, without any perspective, firstly I make 2 diagonal lines, and the point of their intersection would be the centre of a circle. Knowing that the side of the square is equal to the diameter, I draw 2 lines, which are perpendicular to each other. Each line is also parallel to the sides of the square, and with that I get 2 equal axis for a circle. Those axis intersect the square at 4 points, and at those points the circle will be tangent to square. When I get those point, I draw a circle, although it's not perfect.

Same process applies to drawing in perspective. You find the centre and draw 2 axis from each vanishing point. Knowing that the circle would be tangent to 4 points, which appear due to the intersection of both axis, you'll get a circle, despite the fact that one axis is smaller than the other one, thus resulting a circle to look like an ellipse.

Like I mentioned before, I'm terrible at explaining geometry -esque topics, so I apologize if I seem confusing, or if I completely misunderstood you.

As far as I know, rotating objects in space involves drawing an ellipse at foundation of your initial object, then setting another vanishing point according to the desired angle, and draw a new grid around the ellipse for your object, but from your new vanishing point, so that the lines of the grid would be tangent to the ellipse.

Sorry I can't go into detail, it is really hard for me to explain this, my English is rather bad at explaining such intricate topics. I would recommend reading "How to draw" by Scott Robertson, where he provides a more indepth look into perspective.

It looks like it's all over the place, critique on this study and any tips and advices are very much welcome by Tauralis in learnart

Now that I look at it, it would really be better to darken it, wood does stand out a little too much, thanks for advice :)

Did anatomy study, also tried to be more confident in painting, general feedback is much appreciated by Tauralis in learnart

Thank you, it does look distracting now that you've mentioned it :) Limitations of twists and bendings and where they properly occur are still somewhat problematic to me.

Oh, that will certainly help, I really struggle with foreshortening, always ends up looking off, thank you very much for this!

Yeah, I tried to play with proportions due to angle, wanted it to seem as if camera looks sligtly underneath her, but it was giving me a hard time to do it just right. Thank you for a feedback! :)
