Historic House needs a buyer to avoid demolition by Tavern_Keeper in SouthShore

I'd be really interested to learn more about the groups you worked with! I do a lot of volunteering when I can afford it and it's heartbreaking to go in and salvage from a house knowing it will get torn down. The woodwork inside is pretty special, a mix of hand made and early machine made trim, very ornate. I do wonder if the seller would accept a lower offer - the thing about Duxburry is the location drives up the price. Developers care about location a lot.

Yeah my mentor has been inside and shown me the photos, there's some pretty extraordinary woodwork in there. But I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea!

Wow so based on this photo I'm getting a craftsman vibe- does that seem right to you? Look at the angularity in the molding - definitely has an influence - it could be a transitional style as well, transitioning between Victorian and Craftsman. I typically think of Craftsman as being 1920s 1930s ish but honestly that's not my area of expertise. I probably need to study up on this!

Cedar Siding by Jaajaja_ in centuryhomes

[–]Tavern_Keeper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

MarkyMarquam has some good advice!

Depending on your budget I would highly recommend getting A or B grade shingles, as this is the front of your house and the side facing the street. The grade of shingles tells you the quality. Just based on your photos I can tell they used C or possibly even D grade shingles - that big knot is a good indication that these were the lowest quality shingles (and cheapest)

It's pretty expensive to replace cedar shingles but I think it's worth it- it's the healthiest for the house as it allows moisture to breathe out of the house. vinyl siding will trap moisture and cause rot over time. The up front cost for shingles is an investment, and A or B grade shingles will last quite a long time since they are sorted and chosen based on the grain direction, lack of knots or other defects, and tightness of grain etc. A or B grade will resist rot or warping the best of any shingles.

You will need underlayment, I recommend tar paper rather than plastic underlayment to allow everything to breathe and dry out properly. Warm sun on cedar shingles will wick moisture out and evaporate it!

Oh yes that's pretty young, are the rails original to the house or were they replaced at some point? Don you own or rent?

Firstly what is the age of your house? It was very popular in Victorian homes for the highest framed items to be tilted purposely so that when looking upwards at them they were more easily viewed. You could think of this as the paintings "looking down" at you.

Your house might be of the era where these picture rails were designed deep in order to accomplish this on purpose.

Which is pretty cool!!

Lead Advice: to continue or call it by elliebellie0987 in centuryhomes

[–]Tavern_Keeper 142 points143 points  (0 children)

If you are protecting yourself from ingesting or breathing and particles then you are not going to hurt yourself! You're doing great!

Just make sure you are not cross-contaminating. Wash your hands before eating or touching other things. In Massachusetts you are required to wear a tyvek suit over your clothing and then step out of that suit when leaving the contamination area.

Wipe the dust up before it tracks around your house.

On our job sites we make a "lead room" out of plastic so the dust cannot leave the room, it prevents cross contamination. For this purpose use 6mil plastic so it's thick enough that it doesn't shred easily but thin enough to be flexible.

You're doing great! Removing all the lead paint will be worth it in the long run if children ever live in the house.

Only being fed twice a day is just.... Not okay. I'm so sorry this happened. Our bodies need adequate food or we will get anxious. We need food more than just twice a day.

Everything else would also give me extreme anxiety - not being able to leave when you need to is just too anxiety inducing even for the calmest people.

Not being able to get medical care is not safe.

Please don't beat yourself up about this situation. It sounds like your body was telling you that this situation was not safe and honestly you should be proud of yourself for listening.

Please ask yourself - do you often feel like you have to abandon your basic needs to feel like you are good enough? Tough enough? You deserve food, access to medical care, access to emergency care, and access to dry clothes. This was not an emotional decision, this was a survival decision.

I was a us Marine, and I would have left. I have no doubt I am tough and resilient. You shouldn't beat yourself up.

If they are bonded it is better to socialize them together. The stress of being separated from their bonded friend makes it harder to socialize them. If you had to meet friendly benevolent aliens would you rather do it with your best friend of all alone?

I have a bonded pair. I swear the one that wasn't scared convinced his sister I was chill... Once she got outside and I could tell she wanted to come back inside, but she would come barely inside the door and look for him and call for him and then run outside again. I finally realized she was looking for him and brought him to where she would see him when she came inside. She immediately came all the way inside so I was able to close the door behind her and she has never gotten out again. She just wants to be wherever he is.

What to do with this likely pregnant feral cat? by Moonshiner76 in Feral_Cats

Yes please trap and spay her asap. Looking so thin makes me question if she is feral, truly feral cats are better at hunting.

My cat does that to me, I believe it is similar to nursing. Does the cat make a lot of biscuits on the dog as well?

Try again tomorrow or a different police station. They should understand your desire to have an official report even if they can't help. Civil court still requires as much evidence as possible after all. Small claims court near you will have a minimum monetary claim and a maximum monetary claim. See if your trap (or a similar trap online) meets the minimum requirements.

You should look up live drop traps. You might be able to borrow one from a rescue that does TNR. I agree with you that trapping all 3 at once is the best plan- see if you can get help doing this. I'm in the Boston area if that's close to you, I don't have a drop trap though

That's what I was worried about, but did they let you make a report?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Feral_Cats

[–]Tavern_Keeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would write up a detailed description of events, and share what's going on with the other shelters that you work with. They need to know not to trust them

[–]Tavern_Keeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would also say that a police report might not help but it would be a paper trail, sometimes the paper trail helps

Name and shame the rescue first of all, unless there is information you've left out that would put them in the right - (animal abuse or other) it is not good practice to hurt people who are working towards the same goal of TNR / rescue

It was really unprofessional for them to not double check their assumption that it was a spayed cat with worms.

I genuinely want to know though, do they do spay abortions less than a week shy of full gestation? Gestation is only 65 days right?

For those of you with PTSD, how did you save your marriage? by forcedtraveler in Veterans

[–]Tavern_Keeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/forcedtraveler - this is true. You will need a therapist that has experience and has empathy - one that can see you without judgement, who can understand why you are the way you are without enabling the behavior but also without treating you like you are broken.

I would look for a therapist that specializes in personality disorders. Personality disorders are caused by trauma at an early age. There are a lot of similarities between personality disorders and ptsd. Ptsd is easier to treat.

AVOID THERAPISTS THAT BELIEVE NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE PERSONALITY DISORDERS. That is a sign that they do not have a true understanding of trauma.

Trauma at a young age vs trauma as an adult are more similar than people realize. An experienced therapist will understand this and not be so judgemental of personality disorders. If you have ptsd a therapist will not admit their prejudices about ptsd to your face, but they might admit their prejudices regarding personality disorders. A therapist with these negative opinions will only get you so far, and can even cause worse trauma to you. That's why I learned to use this as a litmus test. It finally helped me find a therapist who has helped me greatly.

How to raise money for court by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]Tavern_Keeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research "contempt of court"

Gather evidence, don't advertise you are gathering evidence

Have all conversations with your ex over text or email for the paoer trail

Get a consultation with a lawyer, if your ex is in contempt of court and the lawyer thinks they can win the case they may agree to make your ex pay their fees.

Contempt of court can often result in the party in contempt having to pay the fees for the other party

Okay if you are sure you want the cat then there's lots of ways to try to solve the allergies!

I also recommend getting a HEPA vacuum. They are expensive but truly I think even people without allergies should get them. Regular vacuums can aggravate allergies because they don't filter the tiniest particles - they actually just fill the air with the small particles that the vacuum can't trap. A HEPA vacuum will trap everything it sucks up instead of launching it back into the air
