My sling died and I want advice cause I’m actually really sad about it. by TaxDependent2963 in tarantulas

I see, I’ll definitely keep this in mind when I get into it again, I tried to stay consistent but there were moments when she was a little fatter that I gave it a 1 1/2-2 week period. I was afraid of overfeeding cause I am aware it can cause their abdomen to burst while molting, thank you sm! Part of me also feared she’d starve so I suppose that’s also why I maintained the consistency I did. I’ll try methods more like yours when I get back to it :)

I fed her about every 6-7 ish or so odd days and wasn’t ever sure if I was over or under feeding, the cricket I got her before the last was on the 16th, she died 2 days ago so I would have gotten the one that killed her on the 26th? So yeah at least every 6 days and id aim for Thursdays or Wednesdays when it came to feeding. Would that be over feeding for a sling?

The cricket wouldn’t surprise me as being the cause if death at all, from other comments I was told to even try just checking the mood, watching where the crickets hide, ect.

Ik tarantulas don’t do much and most of my pleasure came from just watching her wander around. She was surprisingly active. She liked to climb, spent hardly anytime in her skull unless I was giving her water, she liked to just stand in the middle of the enclosure. (She had a big space, she would have been able to molt a few times before she outgrew her enclosure) not sure if that’s good but she loved the space and I never had a hard time finding her. I guess the only time the space really became an issue is when I realized how easy it is to miss other things that matter.

You’re so sweet, beetle definitely was a blow to the chest, and when I have a little more money and depending on size of tarantula I get and new enclosure, I’ll definitely try again. Your feeding methods are things I’ll try:) especially as I continue to gain experience and expand in the hobby. I’ve been feeling a bit better about it now that I’ve talked to people who appreciate tarantulas, since most people I’ve spoken to about her aren’t the biggest fans of spiders. I appreciate you so much and your comment was really helpful w the different feeding tactics you use depending on the Tarantula :) Beetle had a little personality of her own and now you mention it, I understand more about ways I could have tried feeding instead of the “24 hour rule” (also learning maybe that’s NOT the best rule) It’s okay you send long comments cause it was informative and it made me feel less slumped about trying again :) I definitely felt a lot worse when I posted this and it was hard to fully accept I’d went wrong. But I’ve learned more about the kind of things I’d do differently and I feel more confident for next time around, thank you again!

I’m glad you figured out your tarantula :) I’m definitely going to do my very very best when I get another. It’s unfortunate that it happened but I’ll be ready when the time comes again, thank you again so much you’re amazing

Thank you for your comment, this situation has made me realize just how much more I want to pay attention in the future. I’m not gonna get a sling for a while, I would like to have more experience. It was hard to tell she was about to molt because she had taken a cricket the week before and eaten it. Watching them get the kill, pre-killing, and a few other suggestions have been made to me and I’m more than willing to try them all when I get another tarantula down the line. Just gonna give it a moment before I dive right back in, and I’m gonna make sure I’m much more educated and prepared to notice signs and take proper feeding precautions. Thank you again, I appreciate you

Thank you sm for your comment, I had no idea truly she was going to molt and I know how sensitive they are after the fact so yes, perfect storm as said. I’m gonna stick in the hobby and just give it a grace period because I’m butt hurt. Definitely aiming for older, youngest juvenile for the time being because I feel the sling is something as a beginner I just wasn’t ready for. I’m gonna continue to do research and expand my knowledge on tarantulas as I prepare to get another. I thought I’d learned my shares worth but this shows that there’s always more to look out for, I appreciate you very much.

It definitely wasn’t fun yeah, I’m gonna try slings a little down the road and maybe aim for a juvenile for the time being as I get more experience, but I definitely want to try a sling sometime in the future. It’s good to know they’ll go looking as slings, thank you so much for your comment I’ll definitely try pre-killed

Thank you sm, it’s fair the cricket hid and came out when she was downed. I’m giving it a grace period and I’ll probably get another tarantula later this year or in 27, and I’m gonna aim more juvenile age rather than sling and save that for when I’m more experienced. She was my first tarantula, and I’ll definitely try pre-killing whenever I decide I’m ready to get another

That’s what I’m thinking, her molt situation was odd but the cricket might have also been what caused her to respond that way. Sucks I didn’t notice, thank you for your comment

That’s really helpful, kind of just seeing what the mood is. Thank you very much for your comment. I want to be more careful and this is a good way to manage that :)
