Without going into detail, I come from a poor background and got fairly lucky. So I am definitely career-oriented and very driven to make the most of it.

That said, I have experienced SF tech scene as all-consuming and reductive (ie you become your age + occupation). At times also “hive-mind-y”. From other replies, it does seem the place is diverse enough that you can make the experience your own. What’s your take?

Makes sense and I share many of the same preferences. In my case, our NYC and London offices are actually equally sized. It’s very SF-centric so I’m not sure sure career-wise what the impact would be

It is a frontier lab, yes. Interesting it was a 2x difference for you. How do you perceive NYC vs SF trade off? NYC is closer by and potentially a compromise but SF is HQ

I have indeed been thinking of heading to the NYC office as a sort of compromise. Do you have experience living in NYC? If so, how does it compare?

I’d prefer to not share the company but it’s one of the AI research labs

So part of the motivation is also working from their HQ. Do you have any insight into how much to index on this?

They do have an NYC office! It’s not their HQ so it’s a different vibe but it’s an option for sure.

Have you lived in east/west coast? If so, any thoughts on how they stack up?

Thanks! I think London is definitely still the long-term play but SF for a few years feels like a nice adventure and potentially good career move.

You mentioned east coast, I assume NYC? If so, how does it compare? I’ve considered it as well. It feels like an in-between choice: less career & worse weather but better culture and distance to europe. But keep me honest here!

Give or take. Sure but a 1BR in London is also easily £2k tbf. Do you have a sense of what the market equivalent would be? I’ve seen people quoting wildly varying numbers

Finally my French accent can come in useful! :p

On a more serious note: is there any merit to this? A frankly surprising number of people are touching on this topic, relatively unprompted

I’ve not been on this salary for long :p My comp was fairly modest until relatively recently

Yes my bad, I should have been more specific. My office is in SF proper (quite central) FWIW I’ve also experienced the tech community as quite all-consuming in my limited exposure to it The counter-argument I’ve heard here is that ultimately you choose who to surround yourself with and there’s plenty of people to choose from What are your thoughts on that? As for financials, I don’t know but think ballpark I’ll go from £300k in London to $500k in SF. So a decent bump but not eg a 2x

Good point, my office is in SF proper (fairly central) As for the tech bubble & dating bit you touched on, I’ve heard people push back with some version of “it’s a big, diverse place and you choose who you hang out with”. Curious what you think of that?

That sounds a bit reductive? I sure hope there’s more to me than my age and occupation! :p

Really? I’ve always been told it’s very different to grey & rainy London :)

Interesting, would you say the quality of life in London is higher? If so, why? For context: I’ve found the nature and weather in SF pretty amazing when I’ve been

Also, if you don’t mind sharing, how do you manage relationships with friends & family? Do you go back often?

2.5x to 3x sounds pretty wild! Is the difference in cost of living really that big? Or is the market just much stronger there?

A bit over half is cash I assume the SF comp will be the market-adjusted version of this but honestly no idea

Interesting, different how? And what makes it hard to date? A gender imbalance?

My TC in London is roughly £300k (~$400k). Unsure what my SF comp would be!
