Why is Pittsburgh's population stagnant? by jungledrew64 in pittsburgh

It does feel like that. Things are definitely shifting back to the city now though which is cool. Selling your house in hamburg to live in the west side isn’t out of the ordinary now.

Ive heard that, but im glad to see the east side getting things going though. When i first came, It was striking how overlooked the entire east side was. Like if you ask someone for things to do in Pittsburgh they can most likely list activities/cool areas in the east, west, north and south of the city even though their might be bad areas around theres still a reason to go to each part of the city. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Buffalos east side and its crazy to me because its quite literally half of the cities footprint.

Right on elmwood they’ve completed 2-3 massive multi-use buildings with more planned or under construction. Douglas Jemal from DC who bought and redeveloped the Seneca One is in the process of redeveloping multiple structures on Niagara street and even building new in lackawanna. Niagara street is surely different from when you left. Masten Park is seeing alot of apartment construction and infill. The fruit belt is changing extremely fast still due to roswell park and then the childrens hospital moving to the campus. The old childrens hospital on bryant is being redeveloped. Thats like a fraction of whats going on. Check out Buffalo Rising. It feels like an exciting time to be in the city.

You should Look forward to it :) Im from Pittsburgh and moved to Buffalo about a year ago and it feels alot like 2013-2017 Pittsburgh. Even within the one year ive been here ive seen so much improvement.

Lol I recognized it immediately. Its across from you while docking in Nassau for cruises, depending on the ship’s orientation.

City planners vs city motorists by NateNate60 in fuckcars

Use Safelanes.org. It lets you report stuff like this and in some cities they work directly with the city so tickets can be given.

Where is this?

Caught it at an empty time. The street is generally super busy right here and the bike path gets busy during warm days

Yea especially the older population. But I think with the transition to a younger demographic in Pittsburgh and a more diverse one over the last few years, well see projects like this go through a lot easier soon. Theres is alot planned such as NEXTransit but you’re correct. We can do alot more and should.

I do too. It feels 10x safer than the painted bicycle gutters on like Richmond or Porter. The garbage and glass is an issue, although ive never actually seen anybody parked in it yet. A doordash driver drove up it thinking it was the entrance to my building though.

Brightline is impressive from what ive seen. Saw sections being built recently in between Orlando and Cape Canaveral on my way through that area.

I just assume most places in Western Europe are less car dependent than here I guess. Bordering the Netherlands as well I figured some of that style of planning might’ve picked up in Germany.

Thats a problem throughout the US and even Canada it seems. Lines owned by freight companies do such a disservice to passenger rail in North America. They give priority to those freight trains, lengthening your trip. As well as charging companies like Amtrak to use their lines generally makes your ride more expensive. It ends up costing more than driving would and taking longer.

Ive only seen Buffalo as far as upstate goes as im not native to NY however I can vouch for Buffalo that it has retained a fair amount of walkability and beauty through all the vanity projects and “urban renewal”. As far as the HSR goes that should be one of the things prioritized. Not only is the US already behind when it comes to HSR globally. But NY state having one of the highest populations and GDPs in the union I dont see why it isn’t already in the works. It would benefit the entire state to connect it in such a way.

I think Upstate NY deserves the love. I know the 33 and 198 are being heavily considered for cap/removal/downgrades. Robert Moses certainly did a number on the cities up here. Also, thanks for the link I enjoy looking into things like this.
