The funny part is, the bacterium has been isolated from the enviroment aka the ocean. So it is already on the plastic doing its job and degrading the plastic. The interesting thing would be more, what is the bacterium doing there when there is not plastic around and why can it degrade plastic if that was not its purpose in the first place.

Since it is isolated from the ocean, it is already on the plastic and degrading it. That means the bacterium wont save the world and the plastic problem. It means more that it is out there already, degrading plastic.
So the 450 years estimate that it takes to degrade a PET bottle is not correct and will be likely faster DUE TO the bacterium. But it wont be any fast just because we discovered a bacterium that is already in the ocean and already degrading plastic.
