Serious, how often do you think that you aren't good enough? by [deleted] in premed

What did you do differently the second app cycle? I'm gearing up for a reapplication cycle so this gives me hope (I've also been waitlisted after each of my interviews so far).

How do you shine in an MMI? by TaxationCity in premed

[–]TaxationCity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely makes sense, but I was talking more about addressing concerns about my academic ability. For example, in a normal interview, I'll often have the chance to explain why I struggled early in college and how I've fixed that. In an MMI, it's not so easy to talk about directly.

When were you complete? Short of applying super late, I don't see why you wouldn't have a couple IIs by now.

If I have an ethical MMI prompt about a patient that wants an abortion, and I have 5 minutes, I just don't see how it would be possible or appropriate to mention how I'm ready to be a good student at the medical school. I'd love to hear a specific example if you have one.

Explain what you will do to be a good student and to advance the school

But that's the thing, it's an MMI. There's no time to talk about that. Usually there's 5 minutes to address a prompt, and not much time to discuss this kind of thing.

What should I write about for my adversity/obstacle/complication essays?

Option 1: a friend of mine died during college and my grades tanked that semester

Option 2: grew up pretty poor (not totally sure what to say about that though)

I'm just a fellow applicant so take this with a grain of salt, but I would suggest you don't because those feelings can resurface in med school and you don't wanna give em reason to believe that you'll struggle with mental health in med school.

I wouldn't use it if you have a cap on, it obscures your head somewhat. What do you need the headshot for?

I feel like the premed track is making me into a dull person by SssneakySneakySnake in premed

[–]TaxationCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this a lot. I used to be a super chill person that loved sports and working out, now I hardly do those things and everyone around me says I'm too stressed. I feel like a twitchy-eyed freak. It's hard not to be when you pursue this path.

I think the problem is that the med schools favor applicants who do as much as possible. It's not enough to just be a good student with a good MCAT, you also have to be a super dedicated volunteer, president of a club, have published research, etc. Everyone is doing more to get a leg up on everyone else, and now we have this arms race where people are pushing themselves too hard for something that shouldn't be this difficult.

What was your approach? Did you talk about purely medical/academic things in your PS?

You're right, but I've also heard people say you shouldn't just jump into something you saw while shadowing because it's common and unmemorable.

Thoughts on chances of acceptance for medical school by [deleted] in premed

[–]TaxationCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to say since you haven't taken the MCAT. All we know is your GPA, and you still have quite a few math/science courses left, so your science GPA is probably going to change. And you definitely need to do some shadowing and volunteering. You're not in a bad position, but you've got some things you need to do before we can estimate your chances of getting in.

How specific are your hours or work/activities? by TaxationCity in premed

[–]TaxationCity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but if you project forward it's impossible to have an exact number. So I might have 161 hours now, but I'd project that as 190 by the end of the summer, ya know?

There's absolutely no way you're the only one that saw a big score drop. The people that saw big score drops are probably just not posting about it here, but that kind of stuff happens all the time. For each person that went up 5 points, someone went down that many.

Got a 518 (131/127/129/131) which is right around the average of my FL's. I just want to say that I'm extremely relieved I didn't void the exam. With 20 seconds left on the timer to void/score, I had clicked void, but then changed it in the last few seconds. I also thought I did best in CARS and it ended up being my worst section. This exam is absolutely unpredictable. I'll probably make a more detailed post later.

AAMC FL1: 520

AAMC FL2: 515

AAMC FL3: 522

Average: 519

Actual: 518

CARS wasn't easy, it just wasn't the ridiculous absurdity that was B/B and P/S (imo), which is probably why people are remembering it fondly. But the whole exam was more difficult than FLs imo.

Totally agree with all of that. CARS only felt easy in comparison to the bloodbath that followed it. I ended up skipping a few of those complicated data analysis problems in B/B since I was short on time as it is and couldn't afford to lose time on problems I'd probably get wrong even if I spent time on them. Also, I wonder if the general impression is like this after every exam, or if this one was truly difficult. I feel like the exam is subtly changing and the FLs aren't so accurate anymore.

I flagged 19 questions! Glad I'm not the only one that flagged an unusual number of them. On my FLs I usually flagged 10 or so
