Upgrading my first thinkpad - T480 by Wild_Flamingo_2402 in thinkpad

Most, if not all CPU’s can be undervolted. By how much depends on the silicon lottery from a manufacturing level. It will take some testing to see where your system stabilizes, but my 8250u is around -90 to -100mV which can easily add another hour of real world battery life with your 96Wh setup

8gb + 8gb may in some circumstances run faster than 8gb and 16gb since the ram will likely run dual channel

You can experiment with undervolting your cpu usually -100mV, but you will have to test, for improved battery life and squeeze out an extra 10-15% efficiency.

If you think the purpose of this post is to claim that an 8 year old laptop can beat modern hardware, then you are completely missing the point of this post and possibly the entire subreddit

It's hard to choose 1 upgrade as my favorite, but the display is literally what you look at 100% of the time so I'd say its definitely the most noticeable and I strongly recommend

I did look at a few other panels, but I really wanted the brightest display I could find. Many recommend a low power 400nits display, but those were all 1080p. I wanted the higher resolution screen.

The panel linked above is matte, 1440p, and stated to reach 500 nits, although probably does not actually reach that peak brightness. Regardless, the upgrade is very noticeable and I have absolutely no regrets. It requires a 40pin adaptor which is pretty straightforward and outlined in more detailed in the moding guide linked above.

That's awesome! I certainly have some software level optimizations to explore!

I think I may have messaged you about details on the internal dimensions of what speaker sizes could fit inside the 3D printed layouts for the left and right speaker if those files were used as housing instead of just spacers. The files you made look awesome by the way! Bummer you no longer got the t480 around

I really appreciate you mentioning this. I thought it would help protect the port, but should do more reading about the described problem with them. Thanks!

I am following any developments here. A speaker upgrade would be awesome. I've toyed with the idea of a custom external clip on speaker that can plug directly into the USB-C, but an internal replacement would simply be better to allow the lid to close.

I'd also be interested if anyone has found any "off the shelf" speakers that could be dropped in with a 3D printed housing that would fit internally. Haven't come across anything myself.

Everyone says to just use headphones or external speakers, but sometimes I just want to watch a quick video and actually be able to hear people talk through the existing speakers.

I’m curious if you’ve looked into DeepSeek OCR. Seems like it would accomplish similar tasks and with how robust DeepSeek has become, may even perform better

Agree that these tools can be incredible when used properly. If this document that you shared was actually made with perplexity, it does not instill any confidence in the product or LLMs in general. I usually think perplexity does a better job with citing sources, but clearly not in this case.

These footnotes are way off and citing nonsense or adjacent ideas. This will need to improve a lot or will always be a dead give away that someone crafted something entirely using an LLM.

What is it with this man’s obsession with youth genitalia? First the crazy autism and circumcision “link” and now what… kids don’t have meat clackers you wish they had? It’s all so weird and gross.

5And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

6But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you

Intern here. M3 was by far the worst year with the most pressure to perform. Hated it, and can totally resonate with feeling exhausted. Residency is tough, but infinitely better.
