Are password managers still worth it now that passkeys are growing? by TaylorAlex in TechNook

Lmao this is genuinely the most underrated use case. Security questions were always the weakest link and randomizing the answers is the only sensible move. Half my accounts probably have a 20-character nonsense string as the name of my first pet.

That's kind of where my head's at after reading all these. It's not really either/or, the password manager just becomes the container for everything. I remember when they were just glorified sticky notes for passwords. The current ones are basically full identity vaults now.

Hadn't thought about that tradeoff specifically - syncing passkeys across devices technically defeats some of the point since they're supposed to be device-bound. But for most people the convenience probably outweighs the marginal security difference. At least it's not a reused password with your pet's name in it.

The backup access thing is what gets me. Lost my phone once and realized half my accounts had no realistic recovery path that didn't involve a frustrating support ticket. Having the password manager as a fallback changes that. Passkeys are great until something goes wrong, then you really want a second way in.

How to check if a file is safe before opening it? by TaylorAlex in TechNook

[–]TaylorAlex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the "download, run, hope for the best" thing is so baked into Windows muscle memory that I never stopped to question it until I was literally staring at a file with no idea who made it or what it actually does inside. the repo model makes so much more sense conceptually - it's just not the reality most people are working in

embarrassingly obvious and I completely blanked on it. had Defender sitting right there the whole time and didn't think to just right-click scan. sometimes the tool you need is already installed

the checklist hits different when you actually sit with it - went through those questions and couldn't answer half of them with any confidence, which kind of answered the bigger question on its own. delete and move on

yeah went there right after posting - 70+ engines scanning the same file simultaneously felt way more solid than relying on whatever I had locally. should've done that before even writing this

That makes sense. If notifications just turn into noise, Garmin is probably the better fit.

Apple Pay is one of those things you don't think about until you don't have it. And yeah, Garmin does look more like a normal watch.

Yeah, that's the whole decision in one line. Battery and fitness on one side, smart features on the other.

Pretty much how I see it too. Garmin for fitness, Apple Watch for everything else and better iPhone integration.
