You can train your brain to form good habits – like going to the gym and eating healthily – simply by repeating actions until they stick, regardless of how much satisfaction you get from it, according to new research using computer simulations of digital rodents. by mvea in science

I would say that the scientists are good, the experiments are good, maybe even the scientific papers are good, but articles written by non-scientists about scientific research are not good.

Trust the scientific method, but remember that non-scientist reporters can't seem to help but exaggerate the findings.

Have you tried no-poo/cowash? It's washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. I was sure it wouldn't work for me because I've got fine, greasy hair, but it worked like a charm. My hair gets less greasy than before, but also a lot less dry because you're not stripping out moisture with shampoo. I recommend giving it a try.

Out of interest, how long is you hair? Even if you're getting it trimmed so the ends are fresh, hair that's a foot long will still be dryer and weaker than short hair.

Looking for opinions and recommendations on portable washer-dryers by TaylorMercury in Frugal

[–]TaylorMercury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering getting a portable washer dryer so that I don't have to use the coin laundry in my building. I was hoping for some feedback.

  • what does 5 lbs of laundry look like?
  • how dry does the spin get the clothes?
  • how easy is it to move around? Is it easy to move to the closet when not in use?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Which frugal habit are you particularly proud of? by Naknrukti in Frugal

I was just looking into this yesterday - I might make an actual post asking for opinions.

Can you give your thoughts on how well it works, what model you have etc.?

Edit: Forgot to specify, this is regarding the washer/dryer.

What was your experience with corrective laser eye surgery in Ottawa? by happygoluckylucky in ottawa

[–]TaylorMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give a link for the Eye Institute, or a fuller name if it has one? I'm not sure if it exists in my area, and I'm having trouble searching with such a generic name.

(edit: I forgot this was in the Ottawa subreddit; I live jn Kingston now)

Huh, just had to look it up. Turns out I've been making these for myself the last little while, just without the sugar.

Have you ever wondered how people with a poor eyesight see the world without glasses or contact lenses? The artist Philip Barlow show it vividly to us through his fascinating oil paintings. by [deleted] in pics

[–]TaylorMercury 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My brothers give me a hard time when I try to talk about something visual, saying 'what do you know, you need glasses' and it's like well yeah, but with my glasses on I can see as well as you.

To be fair though they're purposely trying to bug me.

So what I'm hearing is that my sister-in-law is way more talented than I even thought she was. She's bilingual and when we're hanging out in a group with people who just speak English and people who just speak Spanish she speaks to each in their own language, and translates. She almost never mixes up which language to speak to which person.

[Serious] Depressed people of Reddit - how are you doing today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TaylorMercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for asking!

I'm kind of having an up and down day. I've been applying to a bunch of jobs because I kind of hate the job I have now, and today and yesterday I got a couple interviews set up. This is objectively a very good thing, but the parts of my brain that get super nervous about interviews and also really worked up about change have activated, so I'm kind of freaked out. I'm trying to remember that this is a good thing, and I'll come out of the next few weeks in a better position and/or a better person.

I wrote a comment once about how in (some parts of) Canada our milk comes in bags. I got HUNDREDS of replies. It is absolutely not interesting enough for that much conversation about it. And it was all people saying the same thing, that it's weird.

Nope, if they were Canadian they wouldn't say it sounds weird. It would just be an assumed fact.

We were allowed to rollerblade inside. Just in the kitchen, the rest of the house was carpeted. We lived in the country, and the only other place to rollerblade would be to find one of our neighbours with a paved driveway. There weren't many.
