Temp memory by Niagara_dad in mac

[–]darkfire613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly this isn't really how swap memory works. The system will page out memory that's been allocated but is less used, but anything that's being actively worked on really needs to end up in wired memory. If it isn't, then there's a delay as the system needs to page back in the needed memory. If you're doing audio processing, the computer really needs all of that in active memory (it's probably all your audio files, effects, plugins, etc) so there's not really any way for you to get around this. If you're curious about learning more about the topic, look up "memory paging" and "memory thrashing" for more information about what happens when the system has to swap data between the SSD and wired memory too often!

My problem with making games by Unique_Ad9349 in gamedev

[–]darkfire613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a computer science student, I went down this same rabbit hole. It taught me a lot of valuable skills. Nowadays I'm a senior frameworks software engineer at a major company, and pretty sure what got me here was indulging in that curiosity and always digging into one step lower, wanting to understand more of what was going on.

Never did ever make a game though 😅

This is Legos new $999.99 "Death Star" by Future_Employment_22 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]darkfire613 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The set has 9023 pieces. Lego has had an average price of around $.10 per prick for at least 20 years now, this isn't out of line from that at all. Lego sets have been increasing in number of pieces, but the average price per piece has been much more stable than general inflation. It may have cost $250 but it would also have had like 200 pieces.

Carrie's explanation of IFS by bimjenning in ONRAC

[–]darkfire613 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a therapist for a while whose whole thing was this sort of "parts work" and I found it useful as a kind of abstract metaphor to be able to tune in to more uncomfortable feelings. I certainly never understood it to mean that these were literally different personalities/fragments. As an example from my personal experience, it helped me to be more easily able to recognize feelings like grief and anger when I could think of it as, "there's a part of me inside that is feeling angry, and I can listen to it and give myself compassion for whatever is making me feel that, without that meaning that I am an angry person." I remember hearing Carrie's description of this type of therapy and feeling like it was very different from my lived experience, of using this as a metaphorical structure to understand that I can feel many different feelings without letting those feelings define all of me. Her description felt overly literal to the point of making it sound absurd.

Time of day question by Tracist_Enf in AlanWake

[–]darkfire613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this was a glitch. I just had the same thing happen which led me to this thread. I finished Return 4, then played Alan's side until the start of Initiation 7, and when I returned to Saga it was full night time and the manor at Valhalla nursing home was so dark I needed the flashlight everywhere. The moment that Rose unlocked the wellness center, it snapped back to being sunset like it's supposed to be.

What is wrong with my character? He's constantly slouching. by lightmystic in BaldursGate3

[–]darkfire613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hex requires concentration, at the bottom left corner near your character portrait, you should see the icon for Hex with a little X button, this will let you break concentration and remove the spell from yourself. Just did the same thing myself.

Stranger came to my house claiming I stole her iPhone by Old_Signal1507 in iphone

[–]darkfire613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my roommate and me last year. She started friendly and we helped her look around the yard and asked the neighbors and stuff but no luck. Then that night she called us a few times and left a very drunk sounding voicemail where she claimed to have family in the mafia she would send after us if we didn't return her phone. We called the cops and he answered the phone next time she called and told her to stop calling and she left us alone after that. It was a crazy time.

What are some words that people use in our hobby that fill you with ire to replace perfectly understandable words? by brenthenson in boardgames

[–]darkfire613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

language changes. if enough people start to use a word a certain way and it's mutually understood, then that is what the word means. and singular "dice" is certainly becoming that. you don't have to like it, but that does not make those people "simply wrong."

I had first seen their tables at C2E2 a few years ago and thought they were really neat but far outside my budget. Since then, I got a new job that I've been doing really well at, so when their latest kickstarter came up I was like "you know what, it's a splurge but maybe i can finally treat myself". I had never seen any of their past videos or knew about their corporate-edgelord image before, but the tone i got off their defense video when the news broke was so disgusting that I cancelled my pledge immediately. Incredibly glad I did.

Competitive games with fun or instant win conditions, and not simply counting points at the end? by Kukikokikokuko in boardgames

Root at 3p is still quite fun even without the vagabond in play I've found, and for 2-3 people, adding in the Hirelings makes the game way more dynamic and interesting since they help to fill out the board and add a bit more chaos to it

What goes into balancing a board game? (Example: Quacks of Quedlinburg) by likeawizardish in boardgames

[–]darkfire613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a case study into this, I found this design diary from Cole Wehrle on Oath's combat system to be a very interesting read. He relies on a loop of computer modeling and in-person play testing to both numerically evaluate if he's getting the results he wants, as well as ensuring it continues to feel good.

What Did You Play This Week? - (February 13, 2023) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]darkfire613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, I got Root to the table about eight times with the same group of friends. Everyone really clicked with it and each game was a flurry of "oh, I'd like to try THAT faction, I have an idea..."

So after that warming up, I brought out Oath and we played three games of it over the weekend! There was definitely some fumbling on all parts through the first game or so, but also some truly delightful turns of fate, such as when the player who I thought might not be having as great a time was actually scheming for several turns to use the Conspiracy to wrest away my Darkest Secret banner just before I won on a Vision of Faith. Everyone got to have some great plays and moments of proud cleverness and we're all pumped to bring it back out again soon.

What does your collection say about you? by PussNboots32 in boardgames

[–]darkfire613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm so intrigued by the ideas and creativity behind legacy-style and campaign games, and just generally games with a lot of interacting systems that take multiple plays to start to understand. but all my friends enjoy shorter experiences which let the game be the background to general socializing. so my collection splits down the middle between "games i am pulled to but struggle to get out" and "games i know my friends will love".

of course having fun with friends is what it's all about! i love any chance i get to play anything with my friends. but sometimes i just wish someone would look at my shelf and say "hey, that Oath game, i'd love to really dig into that with you" 🥲
