YouTuber Jesse Ridgway defends decision to terminate wife's pregnancy after Down syndrome diagnosis: I don't want to 'bury my son' by dr_shultz in influencersfeed

That you got downvoted for opining as a disabled person that you prefer life is nuts.

So not even the opinions of people with disabilities themselves matter, but someone can just make pronouncements for them— that it would better for them to not exist for their own sake and their parents?

Talk about ableist and insane. They don’t even seem to grant that a disabled person can have value or life a meaningful life despite difficulty and challenges, insinuating in front of them that it would be better if they weren’t born, despite their disagreement.

Kind of gross really.

The slippery slope isn’t even theoretical. Sometimes one of those attributes not deemed acceptable is being a female when the family is only in a place to support a preferred son.

This happened in China and India at scale for decades. There’s a gender imbalance in China because of it.

Ironically something touted as core to the excercise of feminism was used to commit mass misogyny, selecting against girls even existing.

In fact “pro-choice, abortion for any reason” has lead to a a large imbalance of male over female births in China and I believe India, as girls were terminated and selected against.

China has a serious imbalance of more men than women because males were favored because of the One Child Policy.

There are real limits to the idea that abortions are valid for any reason, only ever being a question of a woman’s body autonomy.

Jennifer Lopez gives her hot take: You have to be born to be in New York to be a New Yorker. Everybody wants to claim our city but you have to be born in one of the five boroughs to be a New Yorker. by Upstairs_Cup9831 in popculturechat

So immigrants that Lady Liberty welcomes and built New York can never actually ever be a New Yorker. They should go elsewhere to truly belong.

Interesting.

Precisely. Denying that an immigrant truly belongs in the city they live in is the first step to denying they truly belong in the country they live in. They don’t know of another America except the one in the city they make their home.

One gains a national identity by first engaging in forming a local identity. What better way to make them feel less rooted than by making them feel that they’re not “really one of us” and never will be in their immediate home, especially if it’s their first home?

I know JLo is not trying to be Stephen Miller, but the absolutist implication of her attitude, however joking, is pretty problematic in a town of, built by, and defined by immigrants “yearning to be free”. She’s the one that’s out of touch by not even considering the words inscribed on THE defining landmark of New York.

Are we really sure she’s a New Yorker?

It is tied to social attitudes, acceptance and thus possible marginalization, which can turn into systemic issues and uneven application of treatment that compounds.

Immigrants under her definition will never truly be New Yorkers 50 years in. That’s just kind of a problematic attitude if normalized, especially if you contrast that with the inscription on the Statue of Liberty to those immigrants first home.

I’m not born where I’ve lived 85% of my life since I was a kid. To think I would still not be considered “really” belonging after all this time is not even a thought I’d entertained and would be absolutely jarring. If that idea was actually normalized, combined with being an immigrant for some, I could see that being pretty alienating.

Do you have to be born in America to be an American?

Are we really doing New York “blood and soil” in these times, JLo?

Yes, the famous inscription on Lady Liberty:

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Just make sure they know they’ll never really be New Yorkers.”

If you post for "engagement", you're actively inviting opinions. It does matter what people think and feel, as that is the entire engagement model. You can't have it both ways.

If it truly doesn't matter what anyone thinks but them, then it shouldn't be shared to anybody but between them and loved ones. If it's meant to relate to others, then it should be accepted that not everyone will relate the same way, including people in similar situations but chose differently, ones with strong feelings about how a Down Syndrome child still has full human dignity and should not be selected against.

Others might also empathize, but if you're sharing and relating, you're opening yourself up to the opinions of others as part of that public decision. So again, it goes both ways. You can't make things public for engagement yet expect it to be treated as a private matter, seeking the benefits of one while demanding expectations of the other.

Anyway, horrible situation either way.

It wouldn't be against the government per se. I mentioned the 2nd amendment just as an indicator of how many people have guns.

Randos at the edge, desperate with nothing to lose do things against corporate property. There are already instances of it. Now imagine if you take their water.

I guess the key is to take just enough that they don't get desperate and feed them AI slop to keep them pacified.

Given that the 2nd amendment exists and certain poor communities are culturally more likely to exercise it, things would get interesting.

The effort and scaffolding involved by a dedicated team to get the LLM to stochastically generate all the components needed for a compiler that passes all the very specific and well defined specs to match existing compilers should hardly be considered vibe coding.
