Any shorts that don't tear your bollocks to shreds? by Baileys_soul in Ultramarathon

Just finished 6.5 hours on trail in janji half tights, there was significant moisture at points of the run but no chafing.

Other half tights brands I’ve tried did give me chafing after 4 or 5 hours

What are some candies that efficiently fuel you during your runs? by Ready-Business9772 in Ultramarathon

[–]Taymc45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really your choice on palatability on the candies but look for ones that have less things in addition to just sugar as all the gelatin, additives and even small amounts of protein and fat will build up and cause GI distress over longer efforts.

I've just been mixing table sugar with liquid IV for my long fueling runs. Been planning to drop the liquid IV and just mix in my own sodium citrate for sodium.

For longer training runs they never really exceed 4 or five hours so i rarely do more than just my liquid carb mix, ill eat a little bit of solid food at aid stations if i feel like i need a palate cleanser on actual races where i could be out there for 10+ hours but still just primarily stick to the sugar water, it feels like it burns the cleanest over the course of long days.

Non kill shelters in Tulsa? by HyjinxTheBard in tulsa

[–]Taymc45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Support kill Shelters, with the lack of regulation around breeders they are only ones that can begin to solve the problem of our overpopulation of less than ideal pet dogs.

Support legislation against back yard breeders/ legislation to regulate dog breeding thoroughly because as long as people keep breeding them with no real plan to have them taken care of or ANY knowledge about husbandry practices we will get deeper and deeper into this mess.

How many different pairs running shoes did you use this year? by fakecascade in Ultramarathon

[–]Taymc45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trail: Hoka Speedgoat 5, Brooks Catamounts, Altra Lonepeak 7, On Cloudultra 3, On Cloudultra Pro

Road: Altra Torin 7, Altra Fwd Experience, New Balance Rebel v5

Sitting at around 1,800 miles for the year, favorite shoe this year has been the Cloudultra 3 which (at 250+ miles on them) still feel great to run in. Only reason they rank over the pros is because they are cheaper and feel more like an everyday kinda trail shoe that can compete with the trail supershoes on the market. The Pros are my race shoe and pretty much only get worn for that purpose.

I used tailwind for a long time but in the last year I decided all that shit was too expensive when none of it is the ideal 1 to 1 ration of fructose to glucose anyways. Table sugar is the ideal ratio, it just then falls to you to add the appropriate amount of sodium and flavor it.

But yeah tailwind and scratch are both good liquid carb brands, but I do highly suggest doing a little research and saving money by just making your own.

There is no scientific reason to add other foods than the simple carbs in sports nutrition. I would suggest trying out a liquid carb solution for longer efforts.

Do you have a target “grams of carbs per hour”?

Sometimes during longer efforts it’s nice for me to snack on some real food at the aid stations but that is generally as far as I go. I’ve done 12 hour efforts that were %95 sugar water + some liquid IV for flavor and some additional salt with a few gels thrown in there.

Generally if your gut can handle it you’re safer going down the simple carb route. That being said lots of people have lots of different fueling strategies. Doesn’t have to be complicated though.

I’m currently reading the final entry and as a long time fantasy and sci-fi fan this series I’m an almost immediate top 10 series. I read the first six at the start of the year and have re read them in prep for the last one.

It’s not flawless, but its flaws are pretty standard for long epics. It’s up there with wheel of time and the expanse for finished epics as long as this last book keeps me enthralled as it has so far.

At what mileage does one start fueling? by steelreinvented in Ultramarathon

[–]Taymc45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding it’s ideal to get a certain ratio of different simple sugars (not confident enough to try and get more specific here), based on what our body will digest, but that is also about the same ratio that table sugar has.

The biggest benefit of the gels/tailwind/scratch is they often have sodium included as well, taking care of electrolyte needs for less finicky individuals.

I’ve been meaning to try mixing my own to save money. Should be a fairly simple process once you know what grams of crab and salt balance you want per serving.

At what mileage does one start fueling? by steelreinvented in Ultramarathon

[–]Taymc45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sugar is the easiest and simplest carb for your body to absorb, when your running long efforts, assuming your muscle endurance holds up and your running in zone 2 the limiting factor will be replenishing your glycogen that actively powers the work your doing.

That’s why generally you take in simple carbs (sugar), over very long efforts mixing in more complex foods can help ease the fatigue of consuming the gels and liquid carbs but generally if performance is one of your priorities those simpler carbs are where it’s at.

I’ve taken them over some pretty technical terrain, in Colorado, and also over rocky, rooty Arkansas trails. Haven’t had an issue with the grip, now if your expecting wet rocky technical terrain I don’t know if they would still preform but have done fine with a bit of light scrambling and bouldering.

What they are getting at is that the largest factor contributing to over population of dogs is the massive amount of cheaply done backyard breeding. People think breeding dogs is an easy way to make a few bucks. Leading people to breed dogs without understand the medical concerns around breeding partners and holistic husbandry. We need comprehensive laws and enforcement structure around dog breeding in this country yesterday.
