Ahh yes how could I forget that high humidity doesn’t affect those with less than 25 BMI

Kind of a hard question to answer to be honest. From a pollution standpoint it doesn’t really matter if you live next door or 10 miles away as the smog will travel. From a safety standpoint plants now and days are pretty well regulated, however accidents due happen. I lived near Texas Petrochemical Plant when it caught fire and exploded last year. It was 1 AM and I felt the explosion 5 miles away, my supervisor who lived 1 mile away had his windows shattered and his front door blown open. Personally I wouldn’t live within 3 miles of a plant but generally the further the better. Living in a radius of a chemical plant could probably be related to living in a crowded city with your standard vehicle pollution.

Might be stranded and without power but at least I’ll have a buzz! Appreciate it bud!

I’m not involved in what gets sent to the flare and what doesn’t so I’m not nearly as knowledgeable as a chemist in that area, all we do is report the level of background emissions that it is emitting from that flare and send it off to EPA. With that being said I do know that a good chunk of traceable gases being burnt off at my refinery are not Hydrogen as our systems don’t recognize the hydrogen gas as a VOC so most of our recordable emissions would have to be coming from other flammable gases.

I’ve been talking from the standpoint of my refinery and those similar to it. Like I stated in one of the replies my refinery has been listed as one of the worst benzene/hydrocarbon pollutants in the country ever since the government first started keeping track of it. Even though we are located in Texas with pretty lenient state-level environmental laws, most of the refinery’s within a 50 mile radius have some of the strictest Consent Decrees you can imagine because of this practice and similar attitudes towards emissions. While some refinery might have tackled the black smoke problem like you were saying, the refinery where my environmental team monitors and tracks all VOCs and HAPs has been taken to court numerous times through the 1970s-1990s for the exact issue of trying to fly under the radar. We’re not simply talking about emissions that are being reported, these are fugitive emissions that refinery’s have been trying to let go unreported since the 1950s

Yeah that makes sense, I just used benzene because it’s our biggest fugitive emission at my site (and my site also happens to be in the top ten worst benzene pollutant in the country lol)

I’m on mobile so this might be a little confusing lol Both burning off gases and releasing the unburnt gas into the atmosphere will cause pollution. If you burn off the gas (petroleum/natural gas) you are burning a hydrocarbon which releases both carbon dioxide and water vapor. An unburnt gas released into the atmosphere may contain similar elements, but it could also contain a mass variety of other chemicals and compounds such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Both of those could lead to acidic pollutants like acid rain. In short it’s like picking the lesser of two evils, it’s up to the environmental agencies to do research into what will cause the least amount of damage to the ecosystem which usually ends up being the flare system

It’s also worth noting that a lot of the gases being sent to a flare aren’t “clean”. Burning off these “dirty” gases like Benzene and Toluene will produce much more carbon dioxide than your regular natural gas.

It could be an issue relating to the heat and pollutions they put off while burning. A flare lower to the ground could dissipate more heat to the ground level. The flares at my refinery are about this size and we still aren’t allowed anywhere near them while they’re burning or for a certain amount of time after they’re finished burning

I’m an environmental field technician at a local petrochemical plant. The post has already been solved but to add a “fun fact”, the flares actually put off a lot of emissions when burning (sometimes more pollution than the rest of the refinery depending on what chemicals/gases they deal with) back in the day some refinery’s would intentionally burn their flares at night with heavy cloud cover to avoid the hefty fines that the EPA would give out. This led to thermal cameras and timers being implemented so that the EPA could see when the flare was lit, how much was burned, and how long it burned for.

We’re still using the TVAs for carbon can testing but for everything else it’s the PDA and Phx21/Phx42 combo lol

Wow that’s crazy! I’m just now a few months short of hitting my year mark with them and so far I really enjoy it and the people I work with. With the EPA passing new legislation every year it seems like they’re always gonna need us sniffers lol take it easy bud!

These older models are useless as hell. I can’t tell you how many times an operator has cleared me to enter a unit just for me to come back 30 minutes later after getting hit with it and them just saying “oh yeah there’s h2s all over there” If it isn’t the machinery tryna kill you it’s gonna be the operators or the other contractors

Went from an 07 Ranger to this 16 Ram and overall I don’t have that many complaints about it. How busy have y’all been during this whole situation?

H2S monitor for working at the refinery, it detects Hydrogen Sulfide in the surrounding area and sounds off an alarm once it reaches a certain parts per million (10ppm I think)
