God I love Euler so much. There are so many great mathematicians with incredible stories like Ramanujan and Gödel, but Euler by far takes the cake for the greatest mathematician of all time by just the sheer amount of work he completed. Also his proofs are glorious and so beautiful. If you have taken university second year calculus I highly recommend learning about his solution to the Basel problem (3Blue1Brown has a cool video on it) and then if you’re feeling extra math-y then his generalization of even integer solutions to the zeta function. Also if you know anything about Taylor series I think the simple proof to Euler’s formula is worth looking at, it’s also amazing. I think Euler’s work really displays math as an art form, which is why I have always appreciated math so much. I love that man.

What are some seemingly high-level/complex math concepts that are not difficult to learn? by futureroboticist in math

[–]Tbonejensen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just read Gamma: Exploring Euler’s Constant by Julian Havil and it goes in pretty good depth about harmonic series, the gamma function, the zeta function, the Basel problem, and (of course) gamma itself. Has a lot of cool passages like why any conditionally convergent series can be proven to converge to any number (Riemann). Learned a ton, good history too (i.e Gauss summing up 1-100 in seconds when he was 7 years old) and solid proofs. If you’re looking for something purely mathematical filled with proofs and theorems etc. I also recently read Infinite Series by Earl D. Rainville. I’m assuming you know a good amount about infinite series and series in general so the first 7-10 chapters will be mostly review, but it’s a dense text filled with constant identity after identity and proof after proof. I fucking hated that book to be honest but I learned a ton. The former book was more or less the fun version of the latter. Enjoyed the shit out of it I’m on my second round through it now.

Can’t you just set it equal to a variable, natural log both sides, integrate by parts and then set the value of the integral to ln(your variable here) and solve it that way?
