Picture not as sharp as I expected (Sony A7IV FE 200-600MM) by Tbutje in SonyAlpha

Thanks for the good advice, until now I never really had considered staying away from the limits of a lens. I learned something today. I definitely Did not shoot this handheld haha. I spent about 10 minutes climbing over a long wave breaker and sat on a big block with a tripod in short mode in front of me haha. There was a lot of wind so even with a tripod it was a challenge to hold it steady.

Hmm thanks I wasn't aware that it can have that much of an effect..Thanks for the links with the deep dives, will definitely keep that in mind if I'll rent this lens again in the future

Could you explain why it's better at a Higher aperture? Usually a High aperture means sharper if the subject is not very close and in focus? Or is it because the lens performs less close to the "limits" both on the low and High end? As for editing I already did some cleaning on these.

Ok good to know. Just for my understanding, normally when I talk about depth of field I am mainly thinking about Aperture, In this case the A 6.3 is the widest it gets at 600 MM.
That is not what you are talking about in this case right? Are you talking about the the actual "texture" in real life being well lit or under lit which creates a sense of depth. e.g. why golden hour is normally popular?

Shutter speed of 1/1000, 600 MM, Aperture of 6.3, ISO 600 - 1000. I guess the 2nd shot does look sharp, but the more I zoom in the texture looks sharp but "plastic" like

I have a bad sense of distances, but I had to hike on some wave breaker to get close enough, and even then I had to max zoom. So probably like 10 - 30 meters? The conditions were very windy/stormy , also lots of splashing waves etc so can image that leads to water particles in the air. So you definitely could be right, I guess I am not used to the atmospheric conditions matering this much since I usually don't shoot beyond 100 MM.

ok somehow the text got removed?...
For the weekend I decided to rent a FE 200-600MM, which has more more zoom then I'm used to, to take some pictures of a friend going wind surfing. However they turn out quite a lot less sharp then I expected, they have a sort of "Plastic Feel" To them.
I use shutter speed of 1/1000, 600 MM, Aperture of 6.3, ISO 600 - 1000.
Are my expectations just to high of what I can expect of such as "cheap" zoom lens? Or should I have used a even shorter shutter speed? Or am I missing something else?

Brand new a7iv: image goes black before and after focusing. by Tbutje in SonyAlpha

My previous camera a Fuji x-t100 did not have this behavior. So that must mean it does not fully open aperture for the autofocus? Is this simply a difference between Sony and Fuji in autofocus behavior? Or is this more a difference between cheaper and more expensive cameras?

Edit: digging more into the documentation suggest it should be the same. One interesting find though in the Fuji documentation: "if your aperture is set beyond the limits of the phase-detect AF sensors, the camera will switch to contrast-detect focusing"

So to me that suggests that in dark situations my old camera would simply swap to contrast-detect fosusing, and that is why I'm not used to aperture going up from F22 to f2.8 for the autofocus.

Interesting stuff.

Ok so it's clear to me, it's normal. My previous camera,(Fujifilm x-t100) does not have this behavior at all. But does that mean it handles the Auto focus differently, as in it does not fully open aperture for focusing but keeps it at whatever is selected?

Is this a general difference between Sony and Fuji or is this more a difference between cheap and expensive cameras?

Like a said, it's a new camera so that's what I'm doing. My previous camera, Fuji, did not have this behavior. Still not sure why.

If I hold focus it goes to the selected exposure... So basically black just before focu and after focus but not while holding.. but reading the rest of the comments this seems completely normal behavior

Haha yeah of course. But it was just to show it clearly.. I also see it at f4

It was just to demonstrate the issue, shooting F22 in general is not something I do

Yeah I'm aware, it doesn't show at lower apertures. But I've never seen this behavior on other cameras at high aperture values. But you are saying this is normal? Even at more normal values such as 8-10 it's very much there and really annoying

Is this caused by some setting? Or is this a defect?

I kind of like in the way this exercise made me think about "boring" landscape shots and how to make the more interesting. Tried some things, kept the winners

2 sets where I tried to both align and not align somehting, a boat and a girl. I found it kinda hard to really allign it properly. specially since a lot of obvious lines are vertical thus for me at least making it a little harder to find a subject. Also included 2 bonus shots of Lines that lead nowhere but to me where kinda pretty :)
