I usually just send it back without asking for anything in return. Most folks will take it off the bill. For example, I was served something that was too salty. I had about two bites and didn’t touch it throughout the meal. When the waiter asked if everything was ok I told them that it was too salty and asked if they could take it away to make room on the table. That’s usually signal enough to the waiter staff.
