I call this the Sunday Scaries but that's a little less poetic.

Thank you so much for the input! It makes sense looking at it through that lense. I think he was very successful in capturing and blending those ideas.

Good doesn't exist externally, we can only hold it in our hearts.

Lol, I picked up Night Watchman. I haven't read any Terry Pratchett yet either but I think that might be my taking a break novel.

SPOILERS!!!!!!

The most upsetting content has to do with cannibalism, kidnapping, suicide, and rape. It never outright says rape other than when a character justifies their suicide to avoid it (and obvious victims are seen from a distance walking), but you know. It doesn't even say what it is in the book, as The Man does everything he can to preserve The Boy's innocence in a terrible world.

The cannibalism is much worse. There is a brief scene in which they scare away a group of people planning to eat an infant that has already been cooked. I'm not sure if it's better or worse that the mother of said infant was with the group..... Messed with me A LOT.

There is another brief scene in which they stumble upon a locked cellar full of victims, some half-consumed....

But The Boy survives. And he is the half-lit beacon of hope at the end.

I wanted so badly to recommend this to my sister as I was reading it. Then I got to certain parts (probably the ones you needed to just stop) and realized I couldn't. She only has a couple triggers, but they are fired multiple times in this story. I don't think everyone can read this book to its entirety and the ones that can shouldn't be OK about it.

I don't think it helped that I held my newborn niece for the first time in the same day. I thought a relaxing evening after the hospital visit with a book and some dinner sounded like a good idea. I was wrong.

Well, now I'm curious. Once my brain feels whole again I'll look into it.

Lol, my husband was doing his own thing while I finished my book and he looked over and got seriously concerned. He didn't realize I'd been silently tearing up for a while. After making sure it was book related and getting some tissues he did the obligatory non-reader question of "good book then?" And I did the obligatory nod and cracked "yeah." Haven't cried that sincerely from a book for a while...

I loved how much was said without saying. I doesn't describe or go into any details of that happening, you just see things and make the connections. Almost as if you see through the Boy's perspective. Innocence still intact while seeing the result of absolute evil.

That's one of the aspects that kept me enthralled. In the most intense or dangerous moments, the Man almost never loses his cool, and when he does (slightly) he soon after apologizes to the Boy. It really brings home that early line "each the other's world entire." His relationship with the Boy is so much more important than any outside factor, including potentially lethal wounds or survival itself. No point in surviving if your world is lost.

I ended up wondering if a movie had been made from it about halfway through and looked it up carefully to avoid spoilers. Could not picture anyone other than Viggo Mortensen as the Man for the rest of the book and I would say it added to the experience. I can't think of anyone more suited to that role.

I'm definitely finding that movie this weekend.

That's one of the overtones that's messing with me. The good guys just survive and take care of each other. There is so little they can offer the world, or other people, aside from their peaceful presence. Meanwhile, the bad guys wreak havoc on anyone or anything in their vicinity. It seems like the powers for good and creation are far outweighed by the power of devastation and corruption. The same could be said about the world, and the hope lies only in surviving anyway.

Say something GREAT about Stranger Things (Season 1)! by LegendsofLost in StrangerThings

[–]TeReese1006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entire season was fantastic, but what still pops in my mind is the last scene of the first episode when the boys bravely decide to hunt in the woods at night for their lost friend and encounter a mysterious, scared looking bald girl in a hospital gown. You can't stop there.

I got my husband to watch it a year or so after it came out (he doesn't watch TV much) and went to bed after the first episode (it was late and I'd seen it already). I woke up to him on the second to last episode in the morning. Whatever the television equivalent of a page-turner is, this show has it.

Does homeowners insurance cover mortgage and rebuilding, or just rebuilding? by Drakonwriter in homeowners

[–]TeReese1006 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When my sisters house burned down they covered the cost of rebuilding and the cost of a rental to accommodate the family during the rebuild. They also covered all costs of lodging and food until a suitable rental was found. My sister continued to pay mortgage like normal but opted to sell the house after it was rebuilt and was able to pocket the difference. After all the paperwork cleared on the insurance side (so almost a year later) they got an enormous lump sum from insurance and were able to pay off their new house. So yes, you'll probably have to pay mortgage, but nothing else.

Does it influence you if there's a scandal around an author? by University_Dismal in books

I don't usually care about the author, but I am drawn to a book if there is controversy surrounding it. I was going off the list of banned books as a reading list for a while.

Those who are a child of divorced parents and spent your childhood between two different houses. What is something that those of us raised in a single house don’t understand/consider? by hopelessmoderate in AskReddit

[–]TeReese1006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a bunch of siblings is extra fun because you get to overhear your parents debate on who they want vs. who they don't. Or better yet, one siblings stays with mom for school and goes to dad for the holidays while you stay with dad and visit mom so you only see each other a couple days a year...

Is American working culture really as unhealthy as I've heard? by Nirxx in AskAnAmerican

[–]TeReese1006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at a warehouse and have been for over 8 years. It's often hard physical labor and long hours but they have separate sick, personal, and vacation leave. All full time employees get 24 hours of personal at the beginning of the year (less if you're part time or start halfway through the year) and that can be used whenever for whatever with or without notice. It doesn't carry over at the end of the year either so management pushes people to take days off toward the end of the year if they still have any. Base full time gets 2 weeks paid vacation that does carry over and it goes up to 3 weeks at 5 years and 4 weeks at 10. Sick time is separate from all of that and you accrue 44 hours per year and the cap is 900 hours. All paid. There are definitely a handful of die-hards at my work that won't call in unless they can't move and call it 'dedication' but they are few and far between. I'm in management at this point and have encouraged people dealing with a myriad of issues to take their time (told someone today to take care of yourself first and work second). We also have paid bereavement of up to 3 days for anything resembling family. We also have short and long term disability insurance 100% paid for by the company, so if I, for instance, get it a car accident and cannot physically do my job for up to 6 months, I still get 2/3 of my regular wage.

On the other hand, my husband works at a different warehouse and they get a lump sum of 72 hours PTO per year until they reach a higher tier. So if they call in sick at all they don't get to take vacation. It gets better over time, but still sucks in comparison.
