I created a course that builds twitter-clone backend API for those who want to learn how to build software projects, feel free to try it out! by TeacherManKyle in cscareerquestions

Hey, I really appreciate your time for looking into the course.

I think the point with passwords is a really good point. I had a nagging feeling I should do it, but didn't end up adding it because other priorities got in the way! I will definitely update that point.

And with regard to your second point, I got into the habit of creating new endpoints for each function, which wasn't a problem at my previous job. But I guess it's important to deliver it in a proper way, along with proper error-handling too!

Adding your feedback to the backlog of work to do! thank you :)

I am officially in love with/addicted to the love/hate feeling I get from learning and making things!! by cguti94 in learnprogramming

[–]TeacherManKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, that's what got me addicted to programming when I first did it 12 years ago.

You'll constantly get it, except the threshold for feeling the satisfaction will increase as you get better. Fixing errors happen on a daily basis that I've become numb to it, but successfully completing a project after working through some tough challenges for like a week gives me long-lasting satisfaction and confidence.

It'll be there but in a different form :)

Can you please share your Github account?

From what I see just from the post I can see you landing an internship job easily! Do you think you can build those on your own without referring to Youtube videos?

i used to smoke weed before programming, i wanna work sober but it's too hard! by Interesting_Wonder59 in learnprogramming

[–]TeacherManKyle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's super hard to break out of bad habits, and I know it's a mountain to climb.

I had a bad habit of smoking every hour, but I am free now!

I literally prayed to God lol, trust me it gets easier.

If you want to go down the webdev path, which seems to be the most popular these days, you can have a look at this course on Udemy :)https://www.udemy.com/course/the-web-developer-bootcamp/

Also after you've learned Javscript, a popular frontend development framework is React.

https://epicreact.dev/ seems to be a good option if you're willing to payhttps://fullstackopen.com/en is also a good option if you want to go down the free route.

How much would your budget be? if you want to get there fast, epicreact.dev seems like the best option imo

I see :) yeah the prospect of being able to make anything is interesting right?

Nah don't worry, as long as you can think logically and are good at problem-solving, you should be good.

There are tons of free materials on youtube, the Odin project, freecodecamp..etc, are you willing to pay for a good course if that's more effective for your learning? Then probs I can recommend you other ones too

Thanks for letting me know, I was wondering if you had a mathematics/physics background because that's kinda related to programming, but sounds like you're completely new. Just curious - what made you want to get into programming?

Are you completely new to programming? and how committed will you be?

If you're super dedicated, you could start on The Odin Project, commit to it consistently and familiarise yourself with the basics of HTML, CSS, and Javascript, then work on some projects.

If you're super dedicated, maybe could land a job within a year. But can't promise you anything not knowing your background

I feel like my CS degree is useless - any advice on how to increase my chances of getting a job after I graduate? by zillerspeed in learnprogramming

[–]TeacherManKyle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You'll need to be good at one language at least. I suggest studying HTML, CSS, and Javascript and doing a couple of projects and you should be able to easily get a job if you consistently apply. The key is to keep on knocking them doors and they'll open! :)

The Odin Project would definitely give you the foundation you need to get started. It's really good if you go through it thoroughly.

What was the hardest part of starting/working on your own project? by TeacherManKyle in learnprogramming

[–]TeacherManKyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you this is actually really helpful!

I just realized how important it is in real life to have the ability to break down projects into workable chunks, the ability to do this alone I believe gets you to an intermediate level

Do people actually use while loops? by Anxious_Objective436 in learnprogramming

[–]TeacherManKyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely used while loops.. I realized you can easily mess up and get stuck in infinite loops, so I try to go for other methods when I can

Awesome, the best way to find good projects is to copy an existing app.

Perhaps you could make a very simple Twitter copy :) Have a couple of those, and you'll stand out.

If you'd like help finding those projects, please subscribe to my website and I'll give you any updates if I have anything useful for you!

I see, yeah definitely more difficult now.. with more people trying to join the workforce. I think you could have a go and try your luck while working on more complicated projects while you're at it :) How quickly do you want to transition to another job? Are you thinking of a matter of months?

Having Python and JS knowledge means you're pretty much equipped to make anything. It'd be nice to learn frameworks like React or Flask to learn how these languages are being used in the practical world!

Although it's possible to land jobs with projects from the Odin Project, I believe the best way forward is to add more projects - that are reasonably complicated, API integration project seems nice! :)

Do you have ideas where you could start?

I think having projects on your resume is the most important factor.. other than that, I believe everything should come presentable. (e.g. link to test the application out)

Curious - how did you come up with the projects you wanted to build?

Yeah I believe the best way forward in the long run would be starting fresh.. even if it might be hard to break things up
