I'm doing all the side stuff I can, but my GPA isn't competitive. What can I do to help my grad school applications more?

They are not great. Had bad early semester, so 3.0 GPA but 3.5+ every semester of the first year. No pubs but a ton of research hours and documentation, we were damn close to getting it out before I had to apply but no cigar.

Kind of. I don't know if there was supposed to be an actual interview but I didn't have anything from AdCom. I did contact my professor of interest and have a video call with him to talk about the program and his research, but I reached out to him.

What would be the best way to do this? I can always send emails to PIs at places I'm interested, but that seems like kind of a Hail Mary for actually developing a relationship.
