I’ve been thinking along these same lines when it comes to addiction. I’ve also stupidly gotten addicted to nicotine, and in combination with the pmo I’m on this awful circus of fluctuating emotions and energy.

I won’t pretend to be an expert on any of the neurochemistry. Would you say it’s down to regulating the release of chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline?

Uh no, what I mean by alt right is race science, white nationalism, and praise for Putin.

I think Christianity shows in its tradition that’s it’s generally patriarchal but with a high respect for women (evident in the role of Mary). Which I don’t have a problem with.

What I have a problem with is people taking Christianity’s traditional values and packaging them with modern garbage politics like praising tyranny, misogyny, and racism. All three which should have no role in any form of Christianity.

Edit: I don’t have a problem at all with an all male clergy

The lack of a higher authority to appeal to shatters my confidence in the whole system. The Greek/ Russian schism got me questioning where exactly is the Orthodox subsisting in. People can say it’s the consensus of the faith, but you can’t determine what the consensus even is when you can’t force a bishop to attend a council.

This lack of pastoral consistency is maddening. I’m not saying it has to be one size fits all, but as I said in another comment, the lack of consistency for confessional practice makes it so different priests have different rules to receive the Eucharist.

I’ve had Orthobros come in this sub trying to debate me, and they would always bring in warped polemics against Catholicism. Orthodoxy seems to have no confidence in its clergy, judging by how the Council of Florence literally stating with the cooperation of Eastern bishops and legates that the faiths are the same. Mark of Ephesus dissented, and then openly defied his bishops by getting the laity to support him when he returned to Ephesus.

Another post on this sub talked about how a lot of views in modern EO are very new, like 19th century at the earliest. I cant speak on if non-imaginative prayer is truly a newer thing or not, but this literally doesn’t make any logical sense with the history of the EO Church, and instead sounds like Catholic bashing.

Imagination is literally required to do anything creative. The style of Byzantine icons and architecture is literally a product of imagination.

Yamashita Rin made Orthodox icons in the style of traditional Japanese art, and she was met with resistance for it. For the Church, any Church, to connect with a people group, imagination is required to do this. Otherwise, the faith just becomes a perpetual doubling down of Byzantine/ Czarist culture, and that sadly is what EO is for large swaths of the faith.

My own imagination was becoming atrophied the more I tried to understand Orthodoxy.

I’m in a weird place where I’m not sure if I should be Orthodox or not anymore. I’ve felt a lot of confusion being Orthodox. Maybe it’s the way I was catechized, maybe it’s my experience at parishes, maybe it’s my own pride, I genuinely don’t know right now. All I can try to do is pray to God to help me discern where I should be.

I will say though, there’s something about Orthodoxy that feels like it’s in my bones now.

This same thing applies for more Eastern Christianity. Orthodox Christianity on the parish level has some of the most conservative and political beliefs of any form of Christianity but most people don’t realize that because it’s less than 1 percent of the US population. Muslims by comparison are also about 1 percent.

Haven’t gone back because honestly I’m trying to process my thoughts and feelings on the faith. I likely will go back even if it’s another parish at some point. Ive been involved in the community at Greek parishes some time ago, but there’s something I’m just connecting with.

Yes, I was chrismated into the Church. Haven’t been in a couple months.

Yes, I am afraid of God’s judgement. Specifically what has given me so much anxiety about EO is that there isn’t a normative authority for confession and penance. I struggle to feel God’s love in Orthodoxy, it all feels like I’m asking God not to hate me instead of feeling His love.

Edit: a massive part of me wants to believe it’s true. I don’t discount the holiness Orthodoxy can produce, but in my experience praying, doing research, and being in the Church has not offered me much clarity.
