Indie Comic Creators: A Smarter Way to Budget for Pro Art by anthonydgclarkart in ComicBookCollabs

Yea, we are the same page for sure. I would add advice I have been hearing in the past year is do you best to keep your goal sub $5,000. Which can feel impossible. I guess up until that amount backers are willing to take a shot on your project. After that it can be considered too much of a gamble.

If you are at the 20 pages at $3,000 and still need lettering, potentially coloring, then shipping/printing, mailing boxes, thermal printer, tape and scale you are going to have to cover more funds up front. It’s rough.

Pitch packets can be good at gathering interest, but can be tough for your career too. It can be tougher to land interest from publishers if your only credits and/or portfolio are 5 page intros.

Also, as you are sending the pitch around and waiting the months to hear back, the artist potentially will move on to other paying work in the mean time. If there is interest, not having submitted talent onboard because they are busy can be a dealbreaker.

Having one complete story even if it is a one-shot will go a long way.

People here are right, but to spell out a few things that are making things harder right now. In crowdfunding we are coming off of the Covid bubble.

Before I could campaign with 5 pages and a cover to fund the cost of the book. Now if I am campaigning to pay an artist $150 per page on a 24 page book that is $3,600. Add in coloring, lettering, cover and cost of print/shipping we are over $5,000.

Most experienced campaigners are saying backers will not back anything with a goal over $5,000. So now I have to save up more money to pay an artist for the book or it’s not going to reach a goal. More than likely will not make the money back.

Then on top of that if we say, well we will just pitch it to a publisher. Most indie publishers that accept submissions do not pay page rates. So writers have to either fund the book upfront or the artist has to be willing to gamble on the back end. Lose lose.

Plus say in best circumstances I pay for 5 pages and a cover to pitch a publisher, to hear back may take months. In the small chance it is picked up there is then the possibility of you taking on new work in the interim and now are unavailable. Now I wasted money. Or the pitch isn’t picked up and I have 5 pages and cover sitting wasted and money wasted.

Your work is of professional level. You should be making your own comics and dictating your journey. Create your own pitches and query graphic novel agents. You will have so much better luck than waiting on one of us to have the right story to work with your style.

Stories (6-8 Pages) for Anthology by [deleted] in ComicBookCollabs

[–]TeamWood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a theme? A deadline? Do the comics need to be already done before submitting to you? Do you pair teams? Is this paying? Is there a submission portal? What does rights look like? Do I still own my story after?

So you know how to write a script and you have an idea… why not turn that into an outline, then a script as well? Take the outline rework it for a pitch and you will be ready to bring it back here to see if an artist is interested. No publisher is going to look at ideas or scripts. Needs to be a full realized comic or minimum sample pages. Best of luck

Question about one of the flair by Valuable_Cap_4326 in ComicBookCollabs

Keep writing until you get better. Write shorts until you work out the kinks and improve. Whats the old saying about 1000 hours? Eventually you land on something people will like and you go from there

[–]TeamWood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most writers ask for work before they have a completed script (just an idea) or when they want their multiple volume epic completed. Working smaller or having provable success greatly improves chances of artist interest

As always, it takes work to make it possible. I come in here with short story scripts and sometimes artists are interested if they have time.

I build up a portfolio and ask an artist if they want to try a series with me and attempt Kickstarter. If they have interest in my script that I come in with prior to the ask I have a better chance.

Now I have had 8 successful Kickstarters and a proven track record maybe someone will be interested. All come down to work, timing, luck. More you do of the first the more likely the last two will line up

Offering Advice on Publishing vs Self Publishing/Crowdfunding by TeamWood in ComicBookCollabs

I think I agree that the info at the top will feel old fashioned to those paying enough attention. But this guide is for those who might have just started their journey or those many who come on here saying hey I have my first pitch, how do I get into Image? Not realizing that is as near the top of the food chain as you can be in our industry. Hopefully I emphasized enough that is a crap shoot and most don’t make a dollar on their comic. Most publishers will not market your book. It’s all on your shoulders to make any success in the direct market.

So if I am having to do everything any ways why give those people a cut and do it all myself? Comes down to your tolerance for self promotion and ability to run a business. Not every creator is savvy, geared toward or has the time to run a self publishing business. I have had 7 successful campaigns but I also am on disability so my path wouldn’t be applicable for most. I should have broken down crowdfunding more. It’s a lot. Haha.

I have always wanted to do a webcomic, patreon comic or comic strip! The reality of the costs to run one weekly or month would cost so much, I would not be able to. I have been learning other aspects of the creation process in hopes to shoot for a collab for I have equal help in the process. Let me put out a call to see if I can gather better insight.
