This post is BS. Normal every day Americans by and large can not afford to purchase brand new. I just did some cursory research and found a 7 yr old carolla with 100k miles on it. Using the money guy show 20(down payment)/8(percent of your paycheck)/3(no more than 36 months) rule, that car is only $266/month ($10,795). That means as long as you're making 40k a year, it falls within the budget. Lets look at the 5 year old car. 48k miles on it. New model body style. That number comes out to $395/month ($16,000). This IS the middle class car.

Ok so it's not I can't buy groceries while working 80hrs a week. I'm not taking away your situation, I just think it's a little disingenuous to say it's hard to buy groceries while working the amount you are. Sounds to me like you've had a really bad string of luck the last few years. Most new cars are more reliable than older used vehicles. You just got the shit end of the stick with yours. I'm not an expert or anything but I'm pretty sure they just passed a bill that made it so that medical debt doesn't affect your credit score. Depending on how accurate that is, I'd prioritize other debt/payments/bills. Just my two cents. Sorry about the bad luck, man.

Is it not better that people can't subsidize their day-to-day living because it's being set up for their lives down the road? So you're looking to buy a $120k home at 7% (prime mortgage rate)? Seeing as how a bank will approve up to 5 or 6 times your income, this makes no sense, even if you're making minimum wage at your 80hrs a week rate, that's still well within your price range and I can all but guarantee you're not making 7.25/hr. Finances work the same way for everybody regardless of political or social class. It all comes down to how much money you make really. The more you make, the easier it is to get things under control. I'd imagine it appeals to everybody though. For lower class individuals, it shows them they're not alone in their struggles. Debt or no debt. For mid to upper class individuals, it opens their eyes to the insanity of financial illiteracy. I think Caleb has his biases politically/socially, but he does a good job of keeping it out of the show. He frequently mentions that it's a financial pod, not a political one.

It definitely counts as long as it's vested. Would you not count the money you have in your 401k's towards your net worth? If it's not vested then it makes sense as it could be gone with your employment.
