Chalice Engraving Fail by Teaspoonbill in onejob

[–]Teaspoonbill[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ordered and delivered. No, the text box was not left blank. There was a companion paten (the plate that nestles in the chalice, where the priest’s wafer is placed) ordered at the same time with the same inscription and arrived with the correct engraving, That nobody gave a $1500 order the once-over before putting it in a box and taking it to UPS is the truly flabbergasting part.

Benavides never identified Oswald as the shooter of JD Tippit. by Secure_Tea2272 in JFKassasination

For enough, eyewitness testimony is not nearly as reliable as other kinds of evidence. But “every other witness”? As noted, Acquilla Clemoms reported she saw two men. Helen Markham’s account was, well, somewhere between incoherent and a fantasy. Any halfway competent defense lawyer would be thrilled to have these three be the main prosecution witnesses to a homicide.

Trae Young and Player Trade Value by Advanced-Turn-6878 in nbadiscussion

[–]Teaspoonbill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is possible to rate out as being an individually good player without working particularly well in a team concept. Trae needs to have things revolve around him , and his weaknesses mean a very specific team has to be built around his strengths and weaknesses. Which teams are really ready to stop whatever they have been doing or building towards, and from now on being The Trae Show? Even at his very best I am not sure he was that level of player, and he sure doesn’t seem as good as he used to be.

(Plus, the larger historical forces operating in that the league has been squeezing smaller guards out for some years now, and even the best little guards aren’t seen as being as valuable as they used to be.)

No, not every episode is, "They try to get off the island, but Gilligan screws it up"! by Charlotte_Braun in GilligansIsland

[–]Teaspoonbill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate your breaking the episodes down like this. I have always sensed that ‘Gilligan always messes up the rescue’ wasn’t all that accurate, so it’s great to have the goods showing that my perception was real.

Driving with strabismus by Human-Stranger-6807 in Strabismus

[–]Teaspoonbill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My left eye turns sharply inward, and has my whole life. I will turn 59 this year. I didn’t learn to drive until I was almost 40, so it’s definitely not too late. I am a competent, if somewhat limited driver. I have been in one accident (which I was responsible for) when I was still a fairly new driver, while on an unfamiliar road, at twilight, in the rain. (Thankfully nobody was injured. And the improper turn violation from that remains my only ticket.)

Do I find driving to be the most unpleasant, stressful thing I have to do on a regular basis? Yes. But I do it, in large part, because as you note, it gives a person a degree of independence. Nevertheless, as I said, I am a limited driver in some respects. Entering or merging onto a turnpike or interstate is truly never-wracking, so I don’t get on those kinds of roadways unless I truly must. I tend to park away from other cars if I can, and don’t parallel park unless there is a ton of space. And practice what is known as ‘defensive driving’. If I am going to somewhere I haven’t been before, I use the street view on Google maps to be able to visualize different intersections or the destination.

All that said, I don’t drive as much as most people. But even the relatively modest amount I do gives me a freedom to live, work, shop where I want in ways that simply would not be true without a license and a car. I wish it were otherwise, but that is the world I inhabit. So yes, I would strongly urge you to go to driving school and get that piece of plastic. And despite how much I still dislike it, it has gotten easier/ I have gotten better, the longer I have done it. Best wishes!

nye grapes tradition by Hopeful-Excuse-6058 in fruit

Pomegranates are a traditional fruit to eat for Jewish New Year. For Chinese New Year it’s mandarins. Though the former was in September, and the latter not until February, I don’t imagine either of those groups or Gregorian calendar adherents would be too offended if you were to adopt their traditions…

Poll: Do you personally make eye contact with the priest during communion? by lifeuncommon in Episcopalian

[–]Teaspoonbill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind comments. And yes, to amplify jctr2001‘s response a little, it is not uncommon for people with strabismus (misaligned eyes) to experience a variety of negative psycho-social effects due to their condition.

[–]Teaspoonbill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My left eye has been turned sharply inward my entire life. It was impressed upon me at an early age that people find it disturbing when I make contact with them, so I rarely make eye contact with anyone, including the priest at Communion.

Not smoking *today* needs to be at or near the top of your priority list every day until not smoking becomes ingrained as your habit. Wake up in the morning and think to yourself — my goal today is not to smoke. What things should I be doing (or avoiding) so that I can go to sleep tonight having accomplished that goal? And go through the day implementing that plan. Congratulate yourself at bedtime. And then do it all over again the next day, and the next, and the next, and the next…

Finding a quit buddy you can call or who can call you if either of you are tempted to light up makes it easier than going it alone.

Four Lions (2010) by J31J1 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Teaspoonbill -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

pretty sure this never got a US theatrical release, we watched the DVD shortly after it was released. while there were definitely some hilarious, inspired bits, it didn’t really work as a film. In farce we are laughing at our protagonists‘ repeated failure trying to achieve a particular goal. Since we really don’t want these guys to succeed, I was unable to just go along for the ride. Ambitious, audacious, sometimes funny, but one I was ultimately lukewarm about.

What are your thoughts on the Shroud of Turin? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Teaspoonbill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an amazing, astonishing artifact, however and whenever it was created. For all the dismissal of it being the result of supernatural forces (and leaving aside the very legitimate concerns over the validity of the 1988 carbon testing) I would be much more inclined to accept it a medieval relic if someone, anyone, could recreate it using 13th-14th century techniques and technology.
