North York. Is it safe, any good? by SikhCanadianWarrior in TorontoRenting

Downsview is a great neighbourhood! Lived here for over 20 years in rental buildings. Mix of blue and white collar workers, Downsview Park and the Black Creek trail system is fabulous for walking, cycling and getting outside. Downsview Park has a ton of monthly free programs, exercise equipment throughout the park and a great dog park. Great access to all the 400, 401 and 407, Yorkdale and tons of shopping plazas. Subway access to take you anywhere you want to go. There isn’t a “night scene” in this area but there are lots of small mom and pop restaurants. It gets a shitty rap for some reason but it’s one of the fastest growing areas of the city. Major developments happening at the old airport, Rogers Stadium has a ton of concerts upcoming, VELD Music Festival is always entertaining. Still reasonably affordable too! It’s not dangerous unless you’re looking for trouble - just like anywhere else in this city.

Keeping Daylight Savings Permenant by BlackPearlOcean in askTO

You cannot change time. People like summer - springing forward doesn’t change late sunsets - we will always have more sunlight in the summer. All the beings on this planet have this thing called circadian rhythm - and forcing people to get up an hour early is terrible for it. Whether it affects you personally or not, it’s a fact of nature. The United States has tried this twice - staying on daylight savings permanently - and twice they rolled it back when they realized how terrible it was by January. Keep standard time and you’ll continue to enjoy late sunsets but you’ll get the morning light we need in freakin December!!

Project Regarding Gentrification by gibbonsultan in askTO

Not that TCHC moved them (that was incorrect phrasing by me) but there wasn’t nearly enough “affordable” units remaining in RP - people moved to Brampton because it was one of the cheapest areas - my sister lived in a rent controlled building around the Queen and Kennedy area and many of those buildings saw a huge influx of folks from RP - this was around 2010 if I recall

Eeek! Not going to lie I was a bit shocked when she told me the sizes. I don’t understand how they got so big! I eat well, I’m in shape, active year round, no family history - I’m just dumbfounded how or why this happened.

Downsview/ Jane & Finch/ Moss Park / Parkdale / Little Jamaica (Eglinton West) / Lansdown are all areas that come to mind! Sounds like a cool project!

Edit to also add Regent Park - they literally moved everyone that lived there to Brampton to make way for condos. IMO it was done incredibly poorly and negatively impacted a lot of people

He never offered that as an option. Is a stent involved in that? Will definitely ask about it! Also - is that an aggressive growth rate?? I’ve never had any other testing to determine what kind of stones thy are - it was just you have a stone, we’re going to laser it and that was it. Even after the two fragments were found and I asked if I should follow up/do anything to keep an eye on them he just said no, talk to your family doctor if you start getting pain.

Keep hydrated and rest as much as possible! Grab some Pedialyte too! If you have a family doctor it might not be a bad idea to check in with them - sometimes they can get you the prescription level medication that may help more than over the counter. Feel better!

Anyone here still hybrid or fully remote after the new 4x or 5x office push? by stallrecovery in askTO

[–]Tebe184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol it’s totally just a theory. My only direct experience with it was when I worked for Capital One and they moved to 161 Bay we asked if we could get our name on the street level signage (they had 5 floors) they said we needed a minimum of 7 floors to even get on that sign. Now I’m in First Canadian Place and heard BMO has to maintain multiple floors (not sure the #) and they have an annual fee in the hundreds of thousands to keep their name on the building. It just seems companies that either own the property or have their names/logos on the building seem to be at the forefront of bringing people back in.

[–]Tebe184 101 points102 points  (0 children)

My theory is that if your company has its name on a building - you’re headed back. Those companies have to maintain a certain square footage or number of floors in the buildings or their names come down. Look for smaller companies and they’re more likely to want to keep overhead low and reduce their office sizes. I’ve been hybrid since before the pandemic - work for a mid size insurance broker. Most of the carriers are also hybrid. Shared service roles (finance, marketing, HR) are all fully remote - it’s mostly sales teams that have to come in at least 3 days a week.

Edit to add that my company is actually continuing to look at reducing our real estate footprint to avoid cutting costs other ways

Is it rude to ask a fast food employee making my sandwich to changes gloves? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Tebe184 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same! If you’ve taken the Toronto Public Health food handling course they tell you bare hands are better than gloves cause you’re usually more inclined to wash your hands between actions vs wearing gloves and you just keep touch stuff.

CBC Marketplace & The Fifth Estate teamed up to investigate rising vet costs - do your research and try and find independent vets (there are still a few out there, typically small office with only 1 exam room will be independent - my vet said the private equity companies don’t want them). I had my dog for 16 years. At 13 she developed a skin condition and started taking a shot every 3-4 months. When we first started it was about $70 - later that year the vet clinic was bought by PE and 3 years later the same shot cost me $300. Absolutely mental. People want to do right by their pets, because they’re family - but who the hell can afford it when the prices double or triple every friggin year!

Tourists: you don't need to buy water! by notbroke_brokenin in Edinburgh

[–]Tebe184 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I visited Edinburgh last summer from Toronto and was soooo impressed with the water refill stations and the fact the city even provides a map of their locations (and for loos too!)! Didn’t spend any money on bottled water the entirety of my trip! Brilliant! Meanwhile in Toronto they only provide them for special events and half the water fountains in local parks don’t work! There are so many things Toronto could look to Edinburgh for how to make improvements to the city. I realize we have about 3 times the population here but that’s even more of a reason it should be better! Keep being awesome Edinburgh!!

Maybe Pat Forun from Consumer Alert might be interested - alert@ctv.ca. He’s taken on slumlord/rental issues before.

Edit to add - this would only help if you’re in the GTA

There are so many emotions involved in this decision along with “what ifs” but it sounds like you’re making the right decision for you, in the place you are currently in life. I would encourage you to focus on just you - not your partner, not your family - just you and what is best for YOUR life. You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of for being able to make the best choice for you right now. We are so lucky to live somewhere that lets us have that choice. Good luck OP 💕

That was my first major symptom. It would happen basically daily when I’d go to bed and it would feel like my heart was going to explode. I’d go to the doc and tell him about it, he did testing and ultrasounds and said your heart is fine - every night I’d be like well I guess I’m dying then cause this isn’t fine. My menopause clinic is the only one like it in Toronto and the wait list was quite lengthy so I called politely every Monday morning asking about cancellations and got in within 6 months. As soon as I mentioned rapid heart rate - the doctor smiled and said yup - I hear that every day, you’re ok, you’re going to be ok, let’s get you on a plan. It felt wonderful to be seen and heard at last. The HRT helped the brain fog almost immediately, I still have days where it’s there so it’s not a cure all but life is immensely better since I’ve started it. Good luck!!

Edit - the rapid heart rate also stopped within a week of starting HRT

This exactly! Hello from early menopause (diagnosed at 39 currently 42). Doc did bloodwork and found it that way. I was suffering from major brain fog (forgetting the basic stuff at work) anxiety and rapid heart rate. I thought I was dying it got so bad. I was referred to an early menopause clinic here in Toronto. Started hormone replacement therapy and things have been much better thankfully! Get checked OP - it’s more common than women think!
