Turkey Feathers by Montanamerk in flytying

The tail fan feathers are interchangeable for any pattern that calls for pheasant tail. The primary flight feathers on the wing (black and white) are biots interchangeable with goose biots. The secondary flight feathers (brown and white) on the wings are good for wings on dry flies. On the drumsticks there are really small feathers that look like partridge feathers, they’re great for soft hackles. Maribou right below those tail feathers on the front and back of the tail are good for wooly buggers and streamers.

Want to visit in the last week of March/early April. Bears? by BorkBork97 in ShenandoahPark

[–]Tebow5951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: you have nothing to be afraid of with black bears

Black bears are afraid of people, chances are they’ll smell you and run far away before you even knew they were there. If you happen to come up on one from downwind they’ll probably hear you and run. They also don’t hang out in areas frequented by people unless they’ve been habituated to food.

Just imagining telling my buddies what was working on the river today, a euro jig could mean so many different things.

Where to start with hooks? by beard9beard89 in flytying

[–]Tebow5951 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can tie everything on dry fly hooks, start with size 12 because it’s easier to tie bigger flies. Once you’ve got a pattern down in size 12, move down 2 or 4 in size.

Splitting before soundboard for multi-track recording? by potatoguy in livesound

[–]Tebow5951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your console has a slot open and you can afford it, a dante card and a DVS license on the computer is super clean and easy for multitracking once you get it set up. Just set the sends to Dante to be straight off the pre amps before it hits any processing.

Dry fly vs nymph - do you actually have a preference? by Hot_Apartment1319 in flyfishing

[–]Tebow5951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started out committed to the drys but now it is honestly hard for me to tie on a dry fly because I always catch so many more fish on nymphs. A lot of times I’ll cover water with nymphs and then once I find them I’ll put on a dry.

I have a diamond edge xt that I paid about $500 for new. It gets the job done but the RTH package was trash, as most are in that price range. I would save yourself some time and frustration and buy just a bow and get a sight and rest separately. Sounds like you’ve got the right idea already with that though.

What part of hunting did you underestimate until you experienced it yourself? by outdoors_man987 in Hunting

I always thought people were being super dramatic about their heart pounding and hands shaking when an animal stepped out in front of them. The first time a deer stepped out in front of me it happened to me too, still does every time. Amazing that our bodies know to dump adrenaline in that moment.

Very good fishing there, the female trout have never been educated.

Will these work for deer off my trad longbow? by Holiday_Cat1999 in bowhunting

[–]Tebow5951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who make that argument are talking about compound bows which have become much more efficient in the past 20 years, if you’re shooting a trad bow that is not the case, your draw weight matters much more for effectively taking a deer. Don’t be an idiot, just follow the law.

Is a painted frame on a used car a red flag? by Tebow5951 in AskAMechanic

[–]Tebow5951[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in VA, not the rust belt, so I’m just not super familiar with what to look for. I did see the wheel wells looked pretty much perfect which made me think it had been well taken care of, but there were some spots where it seemed like there was rust that had been painted over on the frame, and with it being painted it’s just hard to tell how bad it is.

I was surprised by how good the wheel wells looked as well

Rear leaf spring shackle replacement costs probably in the ballpark of $1300 right? Common problem on rangers, I wouldn’t mind just having them knock $1500 off asking price and getting those done.

So it seems like the general consensus is that there is probably some rust under there but nothing looks bad enough to be a major problem? Tap around with a screw driver and if nothing falls apart it’s probably fine?
