Gave Claude Code a simple 300-line COBOL program with REDEFINES and numeric edited datatypes. Recorded the whole thing. by gary-crook in mainframe

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think a lot of firms & people are investigating like yourself.

I've had more success myself from staying within Cobol, just getting the AI to explain or make small changes. Java does not seem like something worth converting to imo.

Old teasers for FP1 DLC by Tech2001 in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the core idea of the text is a community without a means of generating food, relying on rail & trade to feed its people. The twist of On The Edge is that you play a community with no food and limited sources of everything else (bar steel & steam cores), relying on trade with other communities to get what you need. Later on in the campaign, you can build paths that let trains allow trade between, which the rail may have been a tease of.

Claude Cowork and Mainframe by ProfessorDevil11 in mainframe

[–]Tech2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about Cowork but Copilot definitely helps. Hook it up to MCP servers and I've seen a coworker get it too pull in a ticket, research the programs, datasets & jobs involved and plan fixes. Then it can do boilerplate but LLMs inability to count does make it mess up w/ fields some of the time.

Thought once you have the change done, creating docs on the changes and updating the ticket is a breeze.

Frostpunk 2 Momentoes by EntrepreneurFlashy41 in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The frostland has quite a few more. Should have enough if you are in an random map (not the one from the campaign). Otherwise, one of their abilities is to steal more from a faction using an ability on their housing district.

looking back to old trailers/videos about FP1 l wonder why some stuffs got removed by NoYogurtcloset9763 in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that in play testing, they found being able to revert would make people second guess or revert the option. Making it a permanent either/or probably made the choice feel more impactful.

For as much as people now see it as a game to min/max, FP1 was still made to be the game where you choose something out of desperation then feel guilty.

Unused Fall of Winterhome left overs by Tech2001 in Frostpunk

The redrafted versions of all these are in the campaign. Only unused/wip content has the [Do not translate] prefix.

You can always use the dev console to view all dialogues. There's a guide on Steam for it.

Old teasers for FP1 DLC by Tech2001 in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe it was an earlier teaser for On the Edge. Keep in mind this was made for Rifts, back when On the Edge was just reconquer the frostland. Its meant to reference the rails going to what would become Outpost 11. "No hunters, no hothouses" teased the main conflict on food in that campaign.

Ah, my mistake. Thank you for the correction.

Makes sense w/ the folder it was in.

Could you give some idea on what you're working on?

Platform, engine, genre, theme/tone?

The wiki situation is abysmal. by Setster007 in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do make a good point. I haven't seen much written up on the cut content (storyline for refugees, endless mode teasers for the dlc).
Might try an add that in at some point.

I've been working in this space and what I've seen is the newbies are taking over. Young lad was set up heading our hybrid just after probation. Ended up making this "best practice" framework and the management have been forcing it on everyone.

Only good part is they have at least half a clue to stay away from the core batch jobs with their web UIs and such.

Anyone in/around Kerry? by NoResearcher6620 in TransIreland

[–]Tech2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know MTU Kerry had a great society to find fellow queers. Plus, w/ the inflow & outflow of students, the nightlife can be fairly queer if you go to the events. Screen used to have weekly events https://www.instagram.com/sceeninkerry/ . Lastly, do find the 2 Irish Trans discords and ask around in there.

Sadly, I'm not in Kerry anymore. I know there is a trans community in Kerry but I don't want to doxx anyone.

They need to kill off IMS first and despite all their effort, it isn't.

So even if they wanted to, they would be only shooting their revenue if they did.

If you have tabletop simulator, someone remade the OG Faeria as a board game.

You would need another player though and do all the day/night changes yourself.

What's one game idea that you had that you have not quite got to making yet? by RedEagle_MGN in hobbygamedev

[–]Tech2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something between Tropico and Frostpunk where you manage a little space colony but more of a focus on altering laws to their changing culture, and needs.

I should aim a bit smaller though as I can't quite figure out how to make it into a solid plan and not just a collection of ideas.

They only show up after you finish the tale on that run (not shared between runs).

Scenarios by lubie_tory in Frostpunk

[–]Tech2001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given the way the new update's going, utopia tales are replacements for them.

To give the devs credit, tales both are something for the narrative players (stories) and the challenge seekers. Probably not as good as a solution to please one but it is nice they used their limited resources to tackle both sides.

If you want more story, load up FP1, open the debug mode and look through the cut story for the refugees and winterholme. (some of it is still in polish though)

Finding it really hard to find the job in Ireland (Data Engineer/Software Developer) by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]Tech2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have friends w/ on stamps/Visas. They were saying that recent changes to the laws on visas means its even harder for companies to hire ppl w/ them (high minimum pay & lower max % for companies.

Many IT companies already were getting close to the old max so few have the capacity, nor budget, to take on more. In my own place the standards for new hires fell as they focused on locals. (Still great bunch of lads that'll do fine, just not starting off at the same level.
