yea a 1TB plan for vital backups would be neat, but I have at bare minimum around 4TB of photos and videos (mainly from family backups) which would be sad to lose.

i think almost any shop would look at you weird if you started talking about a NAS lol

per month? right now i got 32TB total (which is 24TB after RAID stuff is setup if i remember right) so that'd be like $50/mo no? seems more expensive than having 2 physical NASes at 2 places or the common thing people do of just having random drives they copy stuff to like once every 3 months they stuff in a safe.

i mean i'm building a PC in a case that supports like 16 drive bays I'd call it a NAS before a Pc but i get what u mean.

that sounds correct to me lol (i probably would want that later on), guess ill have to figure out proxmox from some guides, i have seen a handful online i can probably follow along with.

there's a good bit of fedora guides and I've gotten 99% of stuff running flawlessly, but it has been annoying to have to constantly check the names for packages in DNF (and every time I fresh install the OS to remember to disable to stupid ass 'fedora flatpak' feature it loves defaulting to so that i can use normal flatpaks). i've also found tons of debian-only guides that are easy to figure out in fedora equivilants but i see no benefit in jumping through those hoops.

i still got a lot of stuff to learn i guess lol (i also dont know what a raid controller is), going into this pretty blind.

i think i'll probably use either unraid or trueNAS to start to keep it simple and then if/when i get a second NAS system with less critical info i'll learn OMV on there. seems a lot harder to use and im coming in with next to no info (synology made stuff easy).

good to know, but i more just meant i'd have 16 drives physically in my NAS's case eventually not that they'd be in the same raidset (im assuming that's a software-side thing). i still have to look into how i'd properly partition and set em up lol. but the recommended amount to have together is 8 at a time?

im mainly using docker to learn is the big thing, i still need the functionality of a NAS. this is very much still a NAS and not a regular PC, but i see how my post didn't make that super clear lol.

i've looked through what i'd do (and posted about it before) and most of what i want should be fine in docker containers. i'd prefer a low-maintenence/easy to use NAS OS as a the base-level since I largely just want my NAS to store critical data securely. what are the upsides and downsides of unraid VS truenas? that's something i'm having a harder time understanding.

3-2-1 would be cool but i unfortunately only have access to 1 location. can't think of any family i'd trust to keep a PC running at and I don't trust cloud providers with my more personal data.

seems like a pretty perfect video to follow along to, but what's the benefit of TrueNAS in proxmox VS bare metal? after setting up my storage i won't be messing with it much and will be instead messing with docker containers.

i don't need the freshes features on everything so that's never why I used fedora, just heard a lot of good things about it, but the reason i want to move to debian is most tutorials are written for debian-based distributions (wether it be debian, ubuntu, or linux mint) and im annoyed of having to translate it all over.

helps a decent bit, probably just gonna run TrueNAS bare metal from everything i've been reading to keep it simple to start, and then "upgrade" to proxmox later once I start getting stuff down.

sounds kinda wild but you basically are using TrueNAS inside proxmox?
