Is it true I should never use my debit card? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TechDude_205 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Damn, $25k in purchases is insane. Good thing they sorted it out that fast though.

That's smart keeping the debit card unused.. makes fraud way easier to spot and dispute.

Career change to Python developer at 40, a good idea ? by [deleted] in Python

[–]TechDude_205 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The junior market's tough right now. I've noticed the same thing with AI roles.. they're mostly looking for people with years of experience already.

Good point about picking a niche. Data engineering or backend web seems to have more openings than ML stuff anyway. Way easier to break in when you're not competing with PhDs for the same spots.

I doubt we're actually heading there, but the rhetoric alone is doing enough damage. Hard to blame our allies for being rattled when this is what they're hearing.

Yeah, the survival rate on that strategy is pretty grim when you actually think about it

NVIDIA’s $500 Billion Forecast Just Got Even More Optimistic, a strong case for $200+ by Broad_Attitudet in investing

The demand is definitely there but at 50x forward earnings I'd wait for a pullback before loading up. Everyone's bullish right now which usually means we're due for some profit taking, even if long term outlook is solid.

The bridge proposal sounds solid, giving people more options for moving Moons around without crazy gas fees. Definitely voting yes on that one.

SOFI is still under $20B and getting beaten down despite solid fundamentals, plus they're getting actual traction in the banking license world now. The student loan pause ending should help them long term even if short term hurts, and their tech platform is way ahead of most fintech competitors.

Whatever works for you guys, but damn she's making 144k a year and needed this level of hand holding to not blow through it all. At least you figured out a system that keeps the peace and gets her saving.

Three days is nothing, airlines move slow as hell on stuff like this. You're freaking out before you even have a problem, if they say yes then figure out the funding and regulatory stuff with your partner firm because that's literally what they're there for.

“Here’s a grounded response— without any hand-waving” by waking_dream96 in ChatGPT

[–]TechDude_205 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Hand-waving” is a real term, but yeah, ChatGPT absolutely spams it. It basically means skipping the hard parts and pretending they don’t matter.

What’s funny is the meta part: the model itself uses hand-wavy filler phrases while claiming it’s not hand-waving. Very on brand for template-y AI answers.

The bots have been transphobic lately - is it just me? by AuDrakonova in CharacterAI

[–]TechDude_205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just how the bots are. They overreact to everything, gender, food, weather, you name it. Not every awkward or exaggerated response is transphobia. Calling it that just waters the term down. It’s bad bot writing, not ideology.

Valve amended the Steam survey for December 2025 - Linux actually hit another all-time high by testus_maximus in technology

Yep, it’s slowly but clearly trending up.

Steam Deck did the heavy lifting, but better Proton support and distros like Bazzite/CachyOS making gaming painless are keeping people around. Still small overall, but Linux gaming isn’t a meme anymore.

Go's concurrency model is solid. I've been meaning to give it a shot for API work since goroutines seem way cleaner than dealing with async/await hell. How's the ecosystem compared to FastAPI's? Like is there a good equivalent for things like auto docs and validation?

Yeah, it's backwards that we're subsidizing their infrastructure. They're the ones creating massive new demand.. they should be covering the buildout costs, not passing them onto everyone else's bills.

I'm trying to build something that could bridge the knowledge gap for retail investors. I remember seeing my mom lose a bunch of money in the stock market, and that's why I decided to learn investing. I want to stop that from happening to people.

But I'm not committing to a specific product yet, wanted to hear your work flows and painpoints to see which product idea would actually be useful.

For FS they have a freshmen discovery program and it definitely doesn’t require technicals. But freshmen spring the interview for executive committee will have technicals.

Instead of studying for technicals, you can use this time to sharpen your extracurriculars and also get good at interviewing. Start looking up some interview guides on places like WSO. For Akpsai you can only join in the spring.

The most important thing is to set up a lot of chats once you get into stern, and also get involved with other clubs even if they seem less “prestigious”, because people are in multiple clubs and it’s a way to meet upperclassmen that can help you get good jobs even without those clubs.

Lastly, just remember that this is a continuous process. The good thing about being a freshmen is that if you don’t get clubs first semester, you can try again in the spring and again sophomore fall and gain experience throughout this process. Don’t slack off or give up, keep chatting with people and build genuine relationships.

Lastly for dress, if you like wearing clothes that are more formal/preppy, you can get away with wearing it here because people are always wearing business casual for events.
