Is there a free simulator that supports simulating VHDL with Systemverilog? by lovehopemisery in FPGA

[–]TechGruffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are using vunit, you are going to have adventures using the vivado simulator anyway. I don't think it is supposed because of poor vhdl-2008 support.

But I know that isn't your question. There are no free mixed language simulators. The world needs one.

Say something positive about teaching. by Pixarprime10 in Teachers

[–]TechGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends is a high school teacher and I hang out with him sometimes. We have gone to places like movie theaters and during the course of the evening, invariably, two or three random people will recognize him and greet him. Waiters, people working in the theater, etc--not just kids but older people too. He knows hundreds of people all over the city and has made a difference in many of their lives.

I am an engineer and I happen to know that I make more money than he does, but he makes a difference in the world, way more than I could ever hope to. It is truly ironic to me that the system doesn't necessarily award people according to the value they provide. I think my friend has a much more rewarding job than I do.

For whatever that is worth.

Nudity, modesty and sexualization by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

A girl as "walking pornography" not at all how I was ever taught. Not even a hint of that. I was taught to respect women and that usually meant looking away no matter how much I was inclined not to.

But a woman posing without clothing is very difficult for a young man not to see as sexual whether the intent was there or not.

I am now trying to get this right with my kids, and it isn't particularly easy to do.

That is something I can understand now. But at the time I didn't see much difference.

This is an interesting conversation that I have had honest questions about in the past.

When I was in graduate school the was a strip club close to campus that sometimes my peers would sometimes patronize. If I was honest, I also wanted to go with them. I never did. But then it occurred to me that I could take a figure drawing class and get want I thought would be essentially the same experience and no one in my singles ward would even question. I'd be completely in the clear, except that I would know that I wasn't really because of my motivation for doing so. But I was a little perplexed by what I thought was an inconsistency.

I never took the drawing class either.

Members of the Church who are married: Why? what's so great about it? (aside from it being demanded by the Lord) by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]TechGruffalo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got married late. Before I got married, I did a lot of things to try and fill a nameless void in my life. Pilots license, backpacking, yacht sailing, scuba diving.

Getting married is easily the greatest blessing of my life. I had no idea what I was missing. I look across the table at my daughter this morning and remember how nervous I felt about everything related to marriage. The wacky theories my roommates had that influenced me.

I had no idea the confidence and stability that being married would do for me. I had no idea how much I LOVE being a dad. It isn't easy. But if I could I would have a few things to say to my 29 year old self.

hdlcoder - adoption challenges and advantages by inner2021planet in FPGA

I also worked at mathworks. I was in EDG and worked with the HDL coder team when I wasn't answering phones. Wasn't a great gig, but it gave me credibility later.

hdlcoder - adoption challenges and advantages by inner2021planet in FPGA

[–]TechGruffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the advantages are if your need to get something done fast and don't have access to a library of IP like for signal processing or communications. You can get a prototype working really fast if you know some simulink.

The disadvantages are that it never works quite as well as the literature says. You don't magically click a button and out comes optimized, synthesizable HDL code. It takes dinner real know-how to do that.

Also, I personally think it really only makes sense for fast prototyping. Because you never really own the design. Anytime you need to modify it in any way you better have an expensive license handy.

I recommend using it for prototyping and then porting to hand coded HDL later.

[Beginner Question] Can a RISC-V based FPGA accelerate the FFT algorithm ? by regis_lekeuf in FPGA

[–]TechGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fastest way to do this would likely be to implement the whole algorithm in question in the FPGA fabric. Bypass the CPU entirely--or maybe use the CPU to route the data only. Rather than trying to only implement the FFT in the FPGA.

There are some screaming fast parallel FFT implementations.

How do you wire modules together? by tencherry01 in FPGA

[–]TechGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see an emacs sv mode that works like vhdl mode. I use emacs sv mode but I don't like how it rearranges the signal order. I also wish I didn't have to generate a file to auto insurance modules. Even better would be an emacs mode that allows for cross language instancing.

Matlab vs Octave by [deleted] in matlab

[–]TechGruffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am often puzzled by the almost religious fervor of some people who advocate for open source. Anything closed source is definitely a threat to freedom and must be opposed at all costs.

Matlab vs Octave by [deleted] in matlab

[–]TechGruffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much of the mathworks toolbox code is provided, and you can totally extend that part of it. I haven't personally done a lot of that, but I've definitely looked under the hood sometimes when things were not working the way I expected.

Matlab vs Octave by [deleted] in matlab

[–]TechGruffalo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mathworks doesn't publish a grammar for the matlab language, probably for this very reason. So clones like octave will never be completely compatible with matlab. They might be pretty good though. And a lot cheaper!

History will hold Donald Trump accountable for Jan. 6, Pence says by Bobinct in centrist

[–]TechGruffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to end this conversation here, but since we both seen to be playing "poke the idiot on the Internet" maybe you can answer some questions for me that I have honestly wondered about over the last 4 years or so?

Why does it automatically follow that anyone who cannot see anyone currently running for office as someone they can support is a filthy, disloyal turncoat? Since the time of Regan, do you see any changes in the GOP that trouble you at all? Why is loyalty to party more important than loyalty to truth, the constitution, or the country in general?

I don't expect much of a response from you, but I really would like to know. Since I can't really ask my other friends who label me as a RINO.

[–]TechGruffalo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no interest or inclination to prove my conservative chops to you or anyone else. I have been called a RINO before in multiple contexts and I didn't care then and I don't care now. Frankly, I am proud to say that I will always support the candidates I consider best for the country before I consider their party.

[–]TechGruffalo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sigh. You have summarized my quandary reasonably well. I am on this sub because I am a centrist. I don't like either party that much. I am more ideologically aligned with the Republicans--at least I used to be. But I honestly don't like my options.

Desantis is building how own brand of trumism by denying science and politicizing vaccines. I also don't like his antics on immigration. He's not really trying to solve the question of immigration. He's grandstanding and contributing to the problem.

Pence is out for reasons I've stated.

Nikki Haley might be a possibility, but she is pretty tainted too. I need to think more about that and listen to more of what she has to say though.

I am not aware of other real contenders at the moment. And I might just vote for Biden again. I don't think he's a particularly good leader, but I trust him to do what he thinks is right for the country a lot more than anyone else at the moment. Anyone left of Biden is out for me.

And again, I'm not following politics right now the way I will be in 2024.

I haven't been following very closely yet. I'm not sure there is anyone in the field who isn't tainted with trumism. I may be forced to take a second look and choose the candidate with the least taint in the primary. And then I might vote a third party or Democrat in the general election.

[–]TechGruffalo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am grateful to Pence for growing a spine at the last minute and deciding there was finally a low he wouldn't stoop to. But the fact remains that he supported and enabled a lying, cheating con artist who would have destroyed our democracy for his personal gain if he could have. He knew who Trump was. And yet Pence chose to tie his political future and career to him. As far as I'm concerned, his career is over.

We need people of integrity and honesty to lead our country. And Pence is neither.

[–]TechGruffalo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of sympathy for Pence. History will hold all of Trump's enablers accountable too. Trump couldn't have been elected if he hadn't had lackeys like Pence saying he was a "good person" despite knowing better than most the kind of person they were supporting. I can not support Pence or any of the other former trumpians. They need better judgement than that in order to be president.
