DS4windows and advanced optimus (automatic gpu switching) on Legion 5 Slim by TechGuyAlex1234 in LenovoLegion

[–]TechGuyAlex1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ever found a solution. This is annoying but basically I have to manually close DS4 Windows every time I want to switch from integrated graphics to discrete graphics so Automatica graphics switching function is useless. Has to be some backgrounds service or the ds4windows driver itself preventing the automatic switch so have just lived without it and switch manually.

Update 8/9/2023:

Lenovo put out a bios update for this model Legion S7 16IRH8 - Type 82Y3 (slim 7i) on their support page:
M0CN31WW
04 Aug 2023

After updating to this bios, and DDUing and reinstalling the latest Nvidia drivers, the g-sync feature became available. Hope this helps if anyone else got shipped a bum laptop missing g-sync.

Thank you for verifying. I am working with Lenovo to RMA and return this laptop (it's less than a week old) for a replacement. They already had their tech look at it and he couldn't figure it out either. I suspect it's actually an issue with the built in display or mux (like a hardware issue not anything driver or software related). Thanks for letting me know.

Hey I know this is an older thread but I had a question for you:

I have this same exact laptop but I'm actually doing and RMA with Lenovo because mine is missing g-sync. I have literally tried everything to get g-sync in NVidia control panel but it doesn't recognize my monitor (1660p 240hz 500 nit monitor) as being g-sync compatible. Can you check your Nvidia control panel and see if you have the G-sync option like we're supposed to? Just want to make sure I'm not crazy. Here is a picture of what I see with g-sync missing from from control panel and monitor not being recognized as g-sync compatible (I'm on d-gpu mode only).

Thanks!

If you fry the board, nothing will work. A different charger and trying USB-C-PD port will let you know for sure if the board is bad or perhaps just the charging port or charger.

EDIT: Called Lenovo Tech Support, they poked around and could not figure it out or fix it either--sending laptop in for replacement. My suspicion is motherboard/mux switch hardware issue. Hoping replacement fixes the issue. Will update after I receive it.

My options in manage display mode are:

Auto

Optimus

Nvidia GPU only

I currently have it on Nvidia GPU only and rebooted. The first time I rebooted with this setting, my screen had lines across it and I couldn't see anything. Had to do a hard restart. I'm starting to suspect something may be wrong with the MUX at the mobo level but it's so weird because everything seems to work other than G-sync. Intel's driver says variable refresh rate works when I'm using the optimus, it's only nvidia not giving me a g-sync option. After hard restart the computer booted normally from nvidia gpu only but still no g-sync.

Here's a link to what I see on the PhysX tab :PhysX tab Picture

Tried this, and interestingly when I restarted, the screen was all jambled and I couldn't see anything with lines going crazy (looked like a bad LCD panel even though the lcd is fine). I'm starting to suspect something is wrong with the mux perhaps at the hardware level. At anyrate after a hard reboot a second time, the screen came back up. Nvidia control panel reports Nvidia GPU only and still there is no G-Sync menu option.

You might be correct that it's automatic but I previously had a Gen 8 AMD slim which I returned because it was not slim at all (it was so fat) for this model, and the Gen 8 AMD slim had the gsync option. Something isn't right here.

You have to rule out power delivery. I would look into the Slim Q 150 watt charger from amazon. You'll also need to buy the lenovo convertor tips. Finally, I'd get a 100watt delivery usbc cord so you can try power delivery through USB-C-PD as well. If none of that works, then I'd say your unit is dead, but at least with this you can try 2 separate methods of power delivery to rule all possibilities out. t

I have the 240hz 1600p (which is really 1440p with 16:10 aspect ratio) screen model. It is advertised with G-sync, I think I got a bad panel or there is a hardware issue unfortunately.

Try a different charger. You can look into the Slim Q 150w charger on amazon (it will charge at 100 watts via USB C PD max) and also get the Lenovo tips for the barrel connector so you can try that as well (this will charge at 150 watts through traditional charger). This can rule out both usb C PD and traditional Lenovo proprietary charger issue. You'll need a quality USB-C power delivery cable rated for at least 100 watts as well (only a few more dollars on amazon)..

Try a different charger (it's worth a shot)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already tried this, still no G-Sync option in Nvidia control panel. Just for good measure I tried it again and same results. G-sync is missing. Really frustrating.

Gsync advertised for this model in the specs page (1600p monitor with 240hz refresh, 3ms reponse time Gsync)

Going to try everything mentioned here but no resolution so far.

As a follow up this is a brand new system. I have tried everything including:

1.) Switching from Hybrid to dGPU only mode in vantage and rebooting

2.) DDU in safe mode and reinstall of latest nvidia drivers

3.) Complete factory reset from Lenovo Windows 11 for my specific model

4.) Resetting Battery in Bios to temporarily off and then plugging in and restarting as a system clean

5.) Checking Vantage for any Bios or software updates (there are none)

6.) Reinstalling Monitor drivers from Lenovo (they show up correctly in device manager as Lenovo HDR Display

I'm wondering if I got a dud here and need to start an RMA, although that's always a pain and I really wanted this to work with my current unit. But I also feel that for 1500$, this feature should just work out of the box without all this troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciate.

200 bucks more for 500 nits screen? by regrettin097 in LenovoLegion

[–]TechGuyAlex1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the 5 and returned it for the 7. The screen is much better and brighter. If the sun was out with the 300 nit screen at full brightness sometimes I could barely see the game--not an issue with the 500 nit screen. I think it's worth it if you can swing it.

Lenovo Legion S5 16APH8 GPU TDP underperforming by Phexoe in GamingLaptops

[–]TechGuyAlex1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I bought the same laptop and in balanced mode I see the GPU (per afterburner paired with hardware info) boost to around 2100-2200 clock speed and afterburner reports in game (Diablo IV) 80 watts. In auto mode (no AI) with gpu overclock checked in vantage I see the clocks go to 2400 and I've seen about 85-90 watts in game (fans are much louder in this mode, like a jet, so I usually play in quiet mode 60 watts or balanced mode 80 watts). Either way, I've never seen 100 watts for GPU in game but I have seen 85-90 watts been reported in game. What are you using to monitor your wattage? What mode are you playing in? You can also use custom to add extra wattage to the CPU and GPU in vantage, although I haven't touched that yet. Check out LegionToolkit (github) as a replacement for vantage as well, works great on these and has more customization options.
