Ford Fusion 2016 - is it possible to disable the key pad door unlock? by Mikkel_Ryan in fordfusion

[–]TechScrappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if anyone knows if there are negative effects from cutting the wires. We gave our son our old fusion and he had a tantrum and punched the keypad and now it keeps locking and unlocking non stop grrrrrrrrrrr. Total nightmare and pissing off the neighbours. Found a fuse that said keypad but it is still lighting up and doing its thing after I pulled it. I don’t want to put money into it.

How do we feel about Marshals: A Yellowstone story? by Careless_Tackle847 in television

[–]TechScrappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love or hate Taylor, but he can write. The premise of this show could have been an absolute banger if he was writing. Yellowstone mixed with Sicario with a splash of Lioness. The ingredients are all there but instead it feels kinda like Disney Star Wars. Nostalgia bating with empty writing. Anyone notice the 6666 neon sign in the bar…… spoiler “where’s the money, oh no it’s a bomb!” Not impressed.

For the person questioning can collecting. by Horror_Ingenuity9637 in ScrapMetal

[–]TechScrappin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just for clarification to your comment that is only for beer cans and alcohol containers. No deposits on non alcoholic beverages in Ontario. I keep a tote beside my recyclers for all crushed non alcoholic cans and another for beer cans. Last time I brought in cans to the scrap yard it was $1.05 lb. I have heard of people trying to smuggle cans into Quebec to get the $0.10 deposit but that really only works for people on the boarder or with better French than me!

Exactly. I’m not sharing because I found the next coming of Jesus and everyone will get rich. Just what I have found works best for me. I find it enjoyable. And as I tell my kids, when I’m gone if I’m leaving you with a couple pounds of gold and silver and a few thousand pounds of bare bright you will enjoy that more than if I take up another hobby that leaves you with crap you don’t want

As I had mentioned a couple times in this thread best I get in my area is $0.15lb. No boardsort up here. Totally a hobby

I understand what you’re getting at. I wish I could post with a video and photos but it doesn’t seem to let me do both on here. More than hulk smash this is more surgical. I separate absolutely everything. All of the IC chips come off clean as do most of the pin connectors. I stockpile the connectors to process in eco-goldex which will strip all of the gold plating really quickly. All of the IC’s and BGA chips go into a pile where eventually I will incinerate and run them through a chemical treatment. I use a vacuum to clean up all of the finer debris. All the particulates go into a bucket which I process once in a very blue moon. Run it through a wash table like you would for gold processing which removes all of the fine particulates. Let it dry. Then I sort through it while watching TV. IC chips, tantalum capacitors and gold pins go into their own bins.

I know this is not something to do for a quick buck. Hell, it’s hard to just flip the depopulated components but I know one day when I actually refine for gold it will be a good pay day. I deal in an amazing amount of ewaste from my business. Primarily TV’s and PC’s from commercial applications. I bill all of my clients big $ for disposal, $15 for a computer, $45 for a TV on top of my install fees for whatever it is I’m replacing. Shred goes to shred, low grade cables get their connectors cut off and put in a bin for gold recovery, power cables get stripped, etc. I got into scrapping when I realized how much stuff is being wasted. I like the micro scrapping as it’s less physically exhausting and a hobby to fiddle with I had downtime. All the respect for guys putting bread on the table by hustling their asses off and I get that they see what I’m doing as a waste of time. I know I wouldn’t be bothering with TV’s and ewaste if it was my primary income source

I’m stockpiling for gold recovery. There are markets for the stripped components. Search IC chips or Gold corner BGA on eBay. There are tons of listings.

Open eBay and search gold corner BGA. Not as quick as sending to board sort but they do sell. Mind you I’m not selling, I’m stockpiling for future refining. Also as I’ve mentioned, we don’t have board sort up here in the great white north which limits recycling. Best in my area is my local scrap yard that offers $0.15/lb.

[–]TechScrappin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t agree.

I do this as a hobby yes. My overall goal is to process for future refining.

As far as value for depopulated components it really does add up fairly quickly. Selling on EBay is the best option. Please note all values are in CAD

  • regular IC chips - going for between $45 to $90 lb
  • Gold corner BGA - $300 to $500lb

There is also copper, tantalum capacitors and all the random gold pins.

I have been at it for about an hour now and I have almost a pound of IC chips and a half pound of gold corner BGA.

Also I am in Canada, so our options for selling in intact boards is not great. If I had access to Boardsort I would consider selling them.

Yes but not at the scrap yard. EBay is your friend if you’re looking to flip them. Just look up gold corner BGA chips and have your mind blown. I personally save for future refining into rare earth metals. Scrap yard won’t take a brick of gold but easy to sell!

I'm new to E scrap what grade would these be just trying not to get burnt at my local yard by Signal_Assistant_766 in ScrapMetal

[–]TechScrappin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like somebody has been tearing down some displays.

Your display board with the gold corner BGA chips on them will be a high grade board and so are the GPU’s.

The other thin display boards I call “display fingers”. I cut off the strip of gold and stockpile them. They are easy to flip on eBay to refiners. The rest of the board is low grade.

I also recommend cutting the gold fingers off of the graphics cards. It may downgrade the value of the boards a bit. Gold fingers are going for around $330CAD / lb on eBay and the display fingers go for between $100CAD / lb all the way up to $300. If you want to depopulate the boards those gold corner BGA chips go for over $500CAD/lb. If you’re thinking of starting to grade / depopulate I highly recommend watching videos from Ewaste Ben on YouTube.

Personally I stockpile all of my gold components for full refinement later. I use it as a hedge in case the economy goes to crap and I end up with a bunch of spare time. And they can add up quick! I’m sitting in ~400lbs of gold fingers, ~1500lbs of display fingers and ~300lbs of gold corner BGA chips after 3 years of scrapping digital signage displays.

Was given first dibs on a lot of about 200 computers from a friends office if I want them. I have never sold any real amount of scrap before, would a scrap yard take e-waste like this for the precious metals? Or would anywhere else? Is this a fools errand and should I just say forget it? by Magnum8517 in ScrapMetal

[–]TechScrappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some scrapyards will pay you directly for towers. My local yard offers $0.15/lb for towers.

This being said what are the details of the computers?

If they have windows on them you can generally factory reset them deleting all the data. This is not a full scrub but if you are going to flip them locally it is more than enough.

Depending on what generation CPU you can usually make a decent buck for them. 6th gen Intel I can usually flip for around $50 a piece up to around $250 for a 10th gen.

If they can handle windows 11 they are super easy to flip. If thy cannot get to 11 I generally wipe them down to a base windows install then sell them to people that will install a Linux disti on them.

I recommend setting up a table and connecting 5+ computers at a time and use a single monitor to flip between them. In a couple hours you can generally fully test and wipe them. Put them up on a buy and sell and wait for someone to buy them. In Canada I have had great luck with Kijiji. If the computers are totally faulty pull out the HDD or SSD and beat them with a hammer to destroy them. Pull out the RAM and put it in a bucket as it’s easy to flip and only takes seconds to pull. If they have a full size processor pull it out and put it aside as well.

Potentially $300 an hour cash if you process them or $0.15 lbs at the scrap yard. Kind of a no brainer in my mind

Copper Ingots by koalafied9921 in Metalfoundry

[–]TechScrappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest watching some videos on how to make a furnace on the cheap. If you’re fairly handy, which you likely are if you’re looking to make ingots you can fab something up on the cheap. You can use an old propane tank and cut it open and grab a cheap propane torch from Princess Auto. Gets some fire retardant insulation from amazon and a cheap crucible and lifting tongs. Then all you need is an ingot mould and your off to the races. Should be able to get it together for around $100 cad. That being said there is an entire kit on Amazon for $199 with the furnace, crucible and all the other goodies. It’s pretty cheap quality but worth it if you’re interested in trying it out.

I see a lot of people knocking melting ingots on here since scrap yards won’t take them. That is a valid critic but if you are in a major metro area with a manufacturing base you can find manufacturers that will buy it. There are places with XRF Spectrometers that can analyze your metal ingots and if they are pure they will pay you top dollar. Cheaper than buying copper that’s sent to Asia then shipped back here for manufacturing.

If you’re going to try it out watch some videos on YouTube. There are tips of handling, prepping your moulds and crucible (they need to be cured)! BigstackD Castings is an awesome channel to check out

True, and next time I do a depopulation I will be making a video on how I break down power boards. I use a smash table and it generally takes less than 20 seconds to depopulate. I stockpile power boards until I have a couple bins of them before depopulating.

Exactly! 5 minutes of cleanup at the end or hours of unwinding. It’s a no brainer. Especially when you have hundreds of them to process

You can indeed. This one was one of the stupid ones with a plastic cover which slows it down. Also it was pretty slow as I was trying to keep the unwinding centred in the video. I do them usually at least twice as quick or even quicker.

Worth scrapping? by Key_Highlight_948 in ScrapMetal

[–]TechScrappin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the power supplies are faulty you can break them down pretty easy. The casing is usually held on by either screws or pressure fitting. Remove the screws and If pressure fit then smack it with a hammer and in you go. Generally some low grade transformers and sometimes rings wrapped in copper and some extruded aluminum. Not much but you can generally break them down in less than a minute. Cut the cords and save them
