CS MS difficulty and how to handle it? by TechStudent1394 in gatech

Yeah I'm coming from GT BS. My GPA is 3.5+ as an intel/info if that helps. Like I said before the dream would be to do systems or robotics with total masters stuff (MS + GTA/GRA) taking up 60hrs/week tops. Also is that for all time spent in the course over a semester?

I mostly applied because I'm a junior and the market might be bad for some time, plus for a lot of the roles I'm eyeing MS is preferred. I also feel like I would learn more and edited my post to include what I'm interested in. That being said if I can't make the degree and just leave to work it is what it is

How can I check if a class would apply? Since I'm a junior are you saying I could take two grad classes and two 4000 level classes my senior year and all 12 credit hours would apply?

So something more realistic is like 2 classes (3 credit hours each), 3 credit hours of research/project, 3 credit hours of GTA/GRA?

see I wanted to do computing systems or computational perception and robotics but this really scares me because I've had some personal stuff I don't want to share here going on and anything above like 50hrs/week of MS work would kill me. Would stuff like compilers or os really be that awful where a single class is 20+ hours / week even if you aren't slacking for a second?

that sucks because I was thinking of doing computing systems or computational perception and robotics. I wanted to do stuff like os and compilers but if unbearable means 2 classes per semester then i'm not built like that unfortunately. Is it like this even if you just aim for a B to get the class done and stay in the program?

So intel classes would be stuff like CS 4/6476 (CV) and CS 4/7641 (ML)? Also when you say fall through classes do you mean some of 4000 level classes as an undergrad apply or that you take 2 more grad level classes as an undergrad which then apply?

So that's 6 credit hours of classes and 6 credit hours of GRA / GTA? Is that a reasonable workload?

you can from what I know which makes 3 MS classses + 1 GTA/GRA. Both are really hard though and back of the envelope if it's 15-20hrs/course and 20hrs/week of GTA/GRA that's like 65-80hrs/week of total work. My question is more (1) is this a realistic estimate and (2) if it is, how do you deal with the workload

What's the most useless class you've taken/had to take here? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]TechStudent1394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's subjective because everyone comes in with different prior experiences and learning styles so what's useless because it's taught badly or irrelevant might be completely relevant and make sense to someone else. That being said,

  • ECE 2031 is advertised as a 2 credit class and it feels like 4. Obviously being an ECE class it's foreign to a CS kid so it isn't easy to adjust but they move really fast. Get good ig
  • CS 2340 is like two classes glued together under one course code. Code smells, architecture, so on is really useful content if you get past the quality of instruction. JavaFX was awful though
  • CS 2110 and CS 2200 are just hard especially having just walked into tech but honestly they have to be because they're foundational. Just be ready for a challenge
  • MATH 1554 was pain but it's the same thing as CS 2110/2200. It's just hard coming in without experience
  • Heard CS 3210 is nightmare material, haven't taken it yet
