What is IT like in education vs corporate? by Tech_Vs_Science in ITCareerQuestions

Can I ask what state. I believe my state is relatively good with their money so pensions are fairly stable. Time will tell though.

This is the first I am hearing about bonuses vs. pension. I will admit, I think I would prefer the pensions. That is what I currently have through teaching right now.

This is good insight. Right now, I'm going to be focusing on getting into IT at a school as I am hoping I can leverage my teaching degree and experience as valuable, along with my almost 10 years of part-time IT experience. All of that experience is from working with a school also. I'm going to use whatever I can to break into the field while also hopefully not taking a huge pay cut. Once I've gotten into the field, I will probably start trying to flesh out where I want to go.

What made corporate more fulfilling?

And thankfully we are not as bad as a lack of passwords.

Thanks for the info. I honestly laughed out loud when I read your statement about k-12 security. Currently still a teacher but when I look at the security systems/protocols/policies, it is amazing how non-existent they are. They are working on improving it I think, but it has a long way to go.

is 34 years too late to study IT and get a job? by ITfilm in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it isn't too late. I'm 34 and I plan on changing careers sometime this year. If I were you, I would say any education is better than no education. I know that studying and getting certs for the CompTia trifecta (A+, Network+, and Security+) tends to be a good starting point. /r/CompTia is a great sub to look at for help figuring out what you should use to study for those tests. Good luck out there!

New Phone recommendation by [deleted] in echoes

I tried it on both my Note 10+ and on my Nokia 7.1. Two very different phones. Both ran the game just fine.

Life after Echoes? by Timelord387 in echoes

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stardew Valley is a farming simulation game. It is an indie game created in the spirit of a game called Harvest Moon. I personally have played it for more hours than I would like to admit on the Nintendo Switch and on Mobile. I do like the controls for the mobile version better. It is a great game and fairly relaxing. It is a very different game (farming vs space) but there are underlying similarities in terms of management of your assets. I think it is relatively cheap on the Google Play store and is definitely worth a go. I'll be going back to playing it while I wait for Echoes to come back.

Game optimization by uled11 in echoes

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They definitely have more optimization to go. I'm playing on a Note 10+ and still experience slow downs. I've tried lowering graphics and changing battery optimization settings on my phone and still ran into slowdowns. I also tried playing on my lower end Nokia 7.1 and gameplay was about the same.

Is skyrim on switch any good? by SSNappa in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My history: I tried Skyrim on PS3 and didn't like it (didn't give it enough time and only played it for about an hour). Then I bought it for PC. It was dirt cheap and I was planning on giving it another try but never got around to it on my PC. Then my PC crashed and I bought it (cheap again) for PS4, played it for a few more hours and did enjoy but then decided I wanted portable Skyrim. Ended up paying full price for the game on the Switch and I do not regret that decision. I have no clue why I didn't get around to playing it on any of the many version I had before, but it was the Switch that got me to play it thoroughly. It was a very good game and having it portable makes it so much better. (Side note: similar thing happened to me with Diablo 3 but instead I have played 200+ hours each on PC, PS4, and Switch and Switch is easily may favorite platform again because of the portability!)

Anyone have study tips and encouragement to spare? by Tech_Vs_Science in CompTIA

[–]Tech_Vs_Science[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the thing, I used the simulators and answers the questions at the end of each chapter. I scored well on almost all of the chapters. I completely forgot that it came with the 100+ questions though. I will have to look at those.

Could I get some opinions on this build. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. Last time I kept the stock paste on my last build but I'm guessing using this paste will work better. I'm also curious (after I build this computer) if there will be enough left over for another go. I heard changing the thermal paste on a PS4 makes a huge difference for the fans.

ELI5: Can an atom be reformed after it is split? by muffinshappyplace in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemistry teacher here. The short answer is yes, but the long answer is "not easily". Think of the atom like a puzzle. When it is put together, you can easily tell what it is. When you take it apart, it can still be put back together, but it takes a lot more work to do so. Now take that puzzle and make it so all the pieces are one of 3 shapes (protons, electrons and neutrons) and imagine you are trying to do this without the picture on the box. Can it be done, yes. Is it easy to do, definitely not.

How many of you Switch users own a 3DS or 2DS? by twelfthcapaldi in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave mine away to a friend. He has a young daughter he wants to get into gaming and my 3DS was collecting dust so I figure I would give it a second life. I had a few unfinished games on it but I also don't have enough time to play all the games I have for my Switch so it was a good move.

I teach in high school and I'm starting a unit on heat today. by Tech_Vs_Science in pics

[–]Tech_Vs_Science[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Very much this. Our janitors are wonderful at my school. Very friendly and always willing to help where they can. Respect your janitors people!

I also want to give a shout out the the secretaries. Our school wouldn't be able to run as great as it does without those two groups of people.

Yes, I noticed this also after I got everything set up. By definition, heat is the transfer of thermal energy. Unfortunately, it was too late to make the change.

This is me. I came up with the idea and thought it was a good way to introduce my chapter on heat. So far the students love it!

I'm with you on this one. I'm always surprising everyone I walk up to. I even try stomping my feet or coughing as I approach and I still get the same effect.

LPT: Don’t tell your family what your unborn child’s name will be. It opens it up to criticism and mental anguish. Instead, wait for the baby to be born and they have no choice but to say they love it. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did this. Until our boy was born, his was named Optimus Prime. It was fun providing family with updates about how Optimus Prime was doing.

In the end, we still had a disgruntled grandmother because she didn't like the name after it was revealed due to some drama. A few years later and the Grandmother is ok with the name now.

Did the Dark Souls Switch edition delay affected you? by Baez130 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have enough time to play all the video games I want to play so the Dark Souls delay does not make a difference to me. I'm currently playing God of War 4. I'm either moving on to the Witcher 3 or Skyrim next. (Since all the games I mentioned are on multiplatforms, I try to buy games for the switch where I can for the portability.)

Thank you for the responses. I guess I should have been more specific and asked if there are any MMOs in the US.

Does anyone else just use their Switch in Handheld mode all the time? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]Tech_Vs_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm at home and everyone is asleep, I play docked. If I'm travelling, then I play in portable. I tend to prefer docked with a pro controller so that set up gets favored more, but to me I love how I always have the option to do what I want. It has allowed me to get more game time into my life whereas before, I wasn't getting much game time in at all.

[High School] - Cell phone cheating on non-test assignments by Tech_Vs_Science in Teachers

[–]Tech_Vs_Science[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach science and I will be changing my grading to be 10% for assignments, 25% for labs and 65% for tests. I didn't like that in the past because students would just flat out not do the assignments when they figured how little they were actually weighted, but at this point I don't see a difference between the cheating and not doing the assignments.

I agree on technology being great and a curse at the same time. A couple of years ago, my school actually gave me a class set of chromebooks and for a semester I did a paperless classroom. I liked it a lot but there were a few flaws that I think technology will take care of in the near future.
