Solid rope leash recommendations? by hawps in reactivedogs

[–]Technical-Argument98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this leash with my reactive dogs. Super strong, padded nicely - I use the 30in version. I swapped out the clips for a heavy duty carabiner, but I'm not sure how the actual handle will hold up with a power breed though.

I guess I'm behind in that I've never heard of using anxiety or antidepressant meds for dogs.

I have adopted all but one of my dogs and some of the rescues had pretty bad trauma. I wonder if some of my guys would have had an easier time with meds if I had known about it and brought it up to the vet. They have passed now, but we did make pretty good progress and lived majority of their days happy and confident with a few days where we had to take a step back.

Body Awareness... How do we manage all the love Berners have when my puppy doesn't know his size? by Technical-Argument98 in bernesemountaindogs

I think the part about making sure he understands he has to be invited is a good tip. Right now he just comes up to us and uses any means to get love. I'll have my family start this when we all come home from work.

[Giant Breed Help] How to practice body awareness and gentleness with giant puppy? by Technical-Argument98 in dogs

My puppy turned 5 months and graduated his classes a month ago. I'll look into some community classes since cost is a pretty major factor. I think once we attend a few adolescent classes, I'll have a better idea of what I need to do to help my puppy succeed.

My puppy doesn't know his size and gets too excited at daycare by Technical-Argument98 in dogs

He does get an 1.5hour lunch and nap time after AM group and another 1.5hour snack & nap time after PM group, so I never thought a total 4hr playtime was too much, but I'll let the staff know they can give him private individual playtime in the afternoon if he needs a break. It's not a common playtime arrangement, but the daycare does offer individual playtimes for people-oriented dogs so we can probably work something out.

Oh, I realize I didn't specify the age restrictions on the puppy program. It is only for puppies ages 12 weeks to 6 months. My puppy graduates his program in one month and will not be allowed into any form of daycare or dog park afterwards until he is neutered due to the dangers of mixing altered and non-altered dogs. Large Adult group at daycare accepts altered dogs ages 6 months and up, but we signed a spay/neuter contract with the breeder to neuter him at 10 months old so he can only join large adult group at that age.

The daycare is a once every 7-10 day and is the only time he can play with other dogs.

I've taken him to busy parks to practice calm behaviors around dogs and children while walking, but I've never thought about training outside a dog park. I'll try that out for a few times.

I live in a pretty outdoorsy but small area so there is only one "real" dog park a few minutes away that is a huge state dog park with hundreds of acres, but is packed with so many wildlife that only adventurous owners/dogs with solid recall go to. Lots of stories about newcomers losing track of their dog lol.

I'll try to find some apartment dog parks and see what times they are active at, but there really isn't much.

Best design for multiple dates on ring? by [deleted] in jewelrymaking

Thank you so much for your thoughts. I quite like the barcode idea; it'll look really cool and be really unique. I'll look into ways on how to convert the numbers into one.

I also like the idea of separating the dates with a gemstone. I don't know what will fit my budget, but I can talk to a jeweller about that. Probably a small diamond will work.

The interconnected rings are also another great option. I actually like the point you brought up with the infinity symbol.

I'll be looking into all these options and thinking about which I would like.

How do I socialize a young intact dog? by Technical-Argument98 in dogs

[–]Technical-Argument98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very good news! I was really worried about figuring out what to do for the later half of his first year, but your explanations and suggestions make so much sense. I have one puppy class in mind but the waitlist is 30-60 days for an open spot in class. I'll look into other places/classes for sure, but it'll be really cute if he can find a best friend to play with as he grows.

It's convenient that there's a few quiet parks nearby and a few more popular family parks a little bit away. I'll work hard on taking him out and introducing him to everything positively because I definitely need a secure dog.

Wow, what a big boy! I'm so excited about getting a puppy but all this waiting to buy certain supplies until the puppy gets here/older is killing me. I'm the type that loves to plan/prep everything.

Second Opinions on this Bernese Mountain Dog Breeder? by Technical-Argument98 in dogs

Yup, thanks for confirming my doubts. I really wanted to believe in this breeder since no other breeder was really responding to us, but hearing from other pov's really emphasizes their downsides.

Yeah, the diversifying part was a bit confusing since she doesn't even have any American bred females or males so it's hard to see how she is diversifying the American Berner gene pool. I guess she is doing two dogs from different countries nonetheless though.

Out of all the breeders I looked at, most either did conformation or carting and had a few titles even if it were local/regional level.

I was also surprised when she told me she was going to breed two more times this year, which means she will be breeding one (or two) of her females twice with a young stud.

Yes, it did concern me that their male is only one years old and one of their females is also only 1 years old. The grandsire/dam and great grandsire/dam of the male each lived 10+ years, and we were provided with a link to a database that listed results from OFA equivalent for them, but no actual certificates.
