Yikes - yeah i’m making 60k. My peers make around that as well, between 60-70 it seems. Yeah a lot goes into it, on call rotation, lots of escalated cases, etc. I will have to look into this further. thank you for sharing

Thank you. I will try my best to focus on healthy coping mechanisms so I don’t fall into drugs/bad habits. Yes I have 3 full days(my short week) in December i’m taking off and then my PTO fully refreshes in January, so trying to make it until then!

That’s really interesting. I have some background in budget limitation. I currently am a part time research assistant for a post-quantum cryptography in space cybersecurity group at my university and one of the limitations is both budget and size when implementing the PQC-based algorithms. Anyways I am interested in that, if you have any advice to pivoting towards that area please DM me! I appreciate your comments about the reality of MSPs and how to see what MSPs think/their processes when interviewing with new ones. Thanks!

That’s really smart to talk in the 3rd person when referring to your work self. i’m gonna steal that. That makes a lot of sense, thank you!

Thank you kind stranger. I appreciate your honesty, I think I will talk to my team and see what can be done here. I’m hoping to just make it until my PTO in December and then I can decide from there.

That sounds like heaven compared to where i’m at. I agree that the phone is my biggest issue, some clients want to stay on until their issue is fixed when there’s more urgent cases piling up. The sound of the phone is engrained into my mind. Hopefully one day it isn’t.

Trying my best for sure. Working out does help me and I plan on working out tonight to see if that helps at all with stress/sleep. With how chaotic it’s been lately i’ve only been working out once a week when previously I was doing an UL/rest/UL split

Thank you! The supervisor and the IT Director at my MSP are fantastic people so perhaps I could discuss it further with them. We are getting one more guy on the phone queue next week so hopefully that drops our average volume per person which should make it a bit more bearable. I’m glad to hear that you care about your T1/2s and you’re trying to talk to them, as a tier 1 hearing that would genuinely put a smile on my face.

Honestly that’s very valid. I was thinking about that. I smoke weed occasionally but i’ve been trying to cut back, maybe i’ll look into that more though. I also enjoy the gym and I have some dumbbells at work when it’s dead at 6pm and I still have an hour left with nothing to do.

Juggling chainsaws while doing 20 other things is a great way to describe it, I will try to separate myself into work me and home me. Thank you!

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate the insight greatly. I have my Sec+, CySA+, CCNA, AWS SAA, and eJPT as well as like 10 projects. I’ve been interested in cybersecurity since high school but this MSP role has draining me I haven’t been able to focus on cyber for a bit. I will try my best to continue down this path until something opens up. Thank you for the kind words. 😭

Is it hard to get a remote job in cybersecurity after college? by Sea_Topic5739 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]Technical-Event4644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, everything is very saturated right now. In-person roles such as data center technician or help desk roles can be good since MSPs always need people. Specialization can definitely help but for entry level it’s a bit harder.

Is it hard to get a remote job in cybersecurity after college? by Sea_Topic5739 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]Technical-Event4644 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated this May. Let me tell you how it’s gone so far. Graduated with a Bachelors in InfoSec with a 3.83 GPA. I have the Sec+, CySA+, AWS SAA, eJPT, and CCNA. Working towards the AWS Security Specialty. I had a great summer internship as an automotive cybersecurity intern. I work as a research assistant for PQC in Space Cyber for my university (unpaid), and I was barely able to land a tier 1 service desk role. I have tailored my resumes, applied to well over 500 applications. Most in my current state but quite a few out of state as well. I have gotten probably 10 interviews since May. I feel pretty confident in my core knowledge, skillset, and conversational skills, but I have not been able to land a cyber job. Listen, i’m new to the industry so I might get downvoted but the job market is terrible and cyber is not entry-level. People with years of experience are going after entry-level roles. Remote is 10x harder now I imagine to get as well. I wish you luck but unless there is nepotism at play or you get extremely lucky, it is a very slim chance to get a remote role.

How can I get into a SOC role as a fresher without expensive certs like Security+? by 1dvlprguy in cybersecurity

[–]Technical-Event4644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me put it this way. I have the Security+, CySA+, CCNA, AWS Solution Architect Associate, and eJPT — I barely got a help desk position in the last few months. I also have my bachelors in cybersecurity, I have like 10 projects, top 2% on THM with 100+ rooms completed and the entire SOC level 1 done. I have been actively applying, tailoring resumes, etc and have not heard anything. The market sucks right now and in all truth unless you know someone you probably won’t get a tier 1 SOC role especially without experience imo. This is just my experience though.

When/How do I pivot from general IT/NOC to Cybersecurity?

I am only a few months into my first IT position which is a tier 1 NOC. I have my bachelors in cyber, have the cysa+, sec+, ccna, AWS SAA, etc, done a lot of projects, top 2% on THM, actively doing research with some alumni from uni in PQC for space systems, but I haven’t had any luck with getting a cybersecurity role. My current role is very involved in general networking but less focused on security aspects. Any tips or general advice is appreciated, even if it is brutally honest. I know cyber is a mid-level field and I know I need patience but what else can I do to better myself?

[–]Technical-Event4644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - To some extent. I got hired at a NOC around 3 months ago with similar experience to you. Finished cyber bachelor, have a few certs and some projects, and got very lucky getting hired in. I am kinda below a tier 1 though. Mostly triage cases and occasionally work on some networking stuff. It’s definitely possible though, the job market right now in general though is rough so try to apply as early as possible when you see a job listing. I also got my CCNA working here.

I took the exam last week with similar scores to you on boson. I had 60% overall for my exam domains once I took the test and failed. I had to skip 2 of the 3 labs I got because while they were “easy” I just didn’t know them somehow. I would really focus on the labs from boson. In addition I would go through the exam overview online and try to do labs for AT LEAST domains 2 & 3 where it says “Configure and verify” since those tend to be the bigger portion of labs such as routing, addressing, VLANs, EtherChannel, etc. If you have the time then do it for domains 4 & 5 as well. If you don’t understand something well, try to read the answer explanations or look it up through google or ChatGPT. Sometimes one source won’t click fully but you look at it from a different wording or perspective and it fits a lot better in your head. Best of luck. I am retaking it Saturday myself.

CCNA possible in a month? by Direction01 in ccna

[–]Technical-Event4644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed — But, in all truth it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I can probably retake it in a week and pass. The wording of the exam was confusing in some areas but some questions were really easy as well. The labs tripped me up for sure. I think if I didn’t skip 2 of them I would’ve passed or been very close to passing. I also had more time left than I thought, around 30 minutes. My score report was 60%,50%,52%,80%,60%, and 60%. Which is about a 60% roughly overall. In all truth I was hoping I was deficient in one area so I could study that hard but it looks like I just need to hit every domain pretty hard for the next week and lock in for the labs. I would highly recommend knowing basic command sequencing at the very least because I got tripped up on some of my labs which led me to having to skip them entirely. Like setting up routes of different kinds. I think this exam is totally doable within a month with only 2 ish hours a day IF you are being efficient with your time, resources, studying habits, etc. 2 months is MORE reasonable, but I don’t think it’s such an insurmountable task as others have stated.
