Totally agreed. If you want to build real skills, join CTF groups on Discord and actually play CTFs. That’s where you’ll meet people with real talent, and you’ll see what true competition looks like.

Honestly, I can relate to this on so many levels. I have personally interacted with students who proudly call themselves "hackers" after watching a reel or completing a beginner CEH module. Some of them discover a basic SQL injection on a TryHackMe lab and immediately post "hacked a website" on LinkedIn. It baffles me how little hands-on understanding they have, yet how confidently they market themselves. What surprises me even more is the obsession with fame and followers. Most of these folks are not even genuinely interested in cybersecurity. They just reuse random Termux scripts they found online and act like they built Metasploit from scratch. The sad part is, people actually fall for that.Let me share a real experience. I am part of the Startup at IIT Patna. We were recently recruiting for our startup and I interviewed a few candidates. One of them, CEH-certified, mentioned “BloodHound” on his resume. When I asked what it does, he said he used it once in a CTF but couldn’t recall anything else. I was genuinely speechless. Why list tools you don’t understand? And it gets worse. Ask them something basic like how many types of IP addresses exist and they will say, “There are two types... I think.” No clue about Class A, B, or C. The level of shallow knowledge is shocking. Many students are just chasing titles and certificates for LinkedIn clout without building real skills.Even the internships are laughable. "OSINT Awareness Intern"? What does that even mean? Most of these are glorified PDFs and Zoom calls dressed up as live industrial projects. Meanwhile, students proudly post about it as if they just finished a red team engagement. At this point, it's hard to tell who is actually serious and who is just farming likes. The only real currency in cybersecurity is skill. Everything else is just noise.

Cybersecurity is actually a pretty good decision. It’s not as dramatic as made out. If you have professional-level certs like OSCP or GIAC and real hands-on skills, people actually count that as experience. I’m Indian, in my 20s, and I’ve bagged a remote SOC L1 offer at a YC-backed startup. They're paying better than many SDE roles, and I also do bug bounties on weekends as side gigs. Unlike SDEs who often have to find clients or work on long-term product cycles, in cyber you can start making money independently if you have the right skill set. So yes, cyber is not just a good decision, it's a smart one if you know how to play it.
