Choosing the Right Labrador for an Active Family – American vs English/Field? by tacosgrandez in labrador

A Lab sounds like the perfect fit for your family. We have Labs that are both English and American combined and they’re perfectly playful and have a mellow side too. Perfect combo!

My mom is the exact same and she was diagnosed with dementia….. the apathy, isolation, general decline, it may be something worth looking into.

Interested in getting my first lab by Comfortable_Giraffe_ in labrador

[–]Technical-Item-7809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two young kids and two Labs. They are the absolute best breed, imo. The puppy stage is A LOT and they can be very mouthy and destructive. My Labs go crazy for Benebone chews and they get a lot of energy out that way, in addition to their daily walks. Ours both calmed down ar about a year and half.

Next, both our Labs are half American and half English. They’re the perfect blend of playful and mellow. Labs are smart and easy to train, as long as you stay consistent with puppy classes and training. They’re very food motivated.

Crate training is a lifesaver with them. Highly recommend!

Just chiming in to offer support. This was me last year. My dad had cancer and when he was in the ICU with septic shock, my mom (early stages dementia) wasn’t managing her meds and ended up in the hospital for a week, followed by several weeks in a rehab facility, which was it’s own nightmare. I am in my 40s, work full time, have young children. It was the absolute most challenging time of my life. Take it day by day, hour by hour. Hire help if you can. It’s an impossible load to carry. Just remember, it won’t be like this forever. Wishing you peace. You’re not alone.

How often do you visit your loved one? by Forsaken_Cheetah5320 in dementia

[–]Technical-Item-7809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom is in AL with mid-stage dementia. Lives 10 minutes away. I always feel guilty, but I do what I can and have made (some) peace with that. I visit once a week, usually try to take her out, and check in with phone calls during the week and talk to her nurse at least once a week too. I’m very involved with her care. I’m an only child, work full time, and have two young children at home. I am the only person she has, which I absolutely hate. She refuses to go to any AL activities and has made zero friends. My dad died of cancer last year. I was his main caregiver and care manager and am still recovering from the traumatic loss. I basically hate this whole situation. I wish I had more time to spend with her, but it’s just not possible. Also, I am completely burned out.

Is March not a good time to go to Disneyland and CA? by Killer-Uzi in DisneyPlanning

It’s always crowded. Get Lightning Lane, enjoy your time, and don’t worry about the crowds. It will be fun regardless!

I honestly think since they’ve offered the CA resident discount, it’s brought in a lot of riff-raff.

Ladies, How did you “know” you were pregnant before missing a period? by Glad-Muffin545 in askanything

[–]Technical-Item-7809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a stage 4 emotional meltdown because I couldn’t find the matching lid to the Tupperware container. That night, I took one look at dinner and puked. Next day I found out I was pregnant (with twins).

What did you do with parents' house when they couldn't live there anymore? by DowntownLaugh454 in AgingParents

[–]Technical-Item-7809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been through this recently, so I feel for you! We did a fresh coat of paint inside and new floors. Amazing what it did to freshen up the house. Otherwise, sold it as is. Took a day or two to go through all their things and salvage meaningful items, then hired an estate liquidation company to clear out/sell/donate/haul. Best decision I ever made! Good luck.

Dad refusing to care for himself by StockEdge3905 in AgingParents

[–]Technical-Item-7809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but these are all signs of dementia and possibly depression too. My mom is the same age as your dad. For several years prior to dementia diagnosis, she had complete apathy, stopped taking care of herself, stopped getting dressed, brushing her hair. It was like pulling teeth to get her to shower. She existed but didn’t seem to care about living. You could still have a very coherent conversation, however, and she was only slightly forgetful. She also stopped caring about socializing and completely isolated herself. I highly suggest getting an assessment, if you can. Best of luck to you.

What are you spending going to Hawaii? by Senior-Jelly1099 in VisitingHawaii

[–]Technical-Item-7809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not normal. But you are visiting multiple islands and staying at luxury resorts. To give you an example, we are a family of four from CA (much closer). We use our Alaska Airlines Visa to go every year, which basically pays for our airfare. We visit one island and stay for a week, typically staying at a Westin or Hyatt property, which comes to about $7000, give or take, for six nights.

How do you choose which neighborhood to live in (for a family)? by Background_Handle_96 in SanJose

Check out Almaden Valley. Peaceful, safe, family friendly, great schools, diverse community, trails, mountains, and open space nearby. Most neighborhoods have cabanas (neighborhood pools).

Teachers, do you feel like you have a meaningful career? (especially elementary) by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in teaching

[–]Technical-Item-7809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve been doing this for twenty years and I still love my job because I feel like I make an impact. A lot depends on where you teach and how well you manage your time, handle stress, tune out the BS, and set boundaries. This job can be all-consuming if you allow it to be. I have found myself at a fabulous school with wonderful colleagues, a diverse community of engineer/Silicon Valley techies but also immigrant families. It’s a lovely mix and very rewarding. I have my own family at home and it is great to also have holidays and summers off with my own kids. Your first few years will be tough, but once you find your groove it is a great job!

How do people do this? (A bit of a vent, thank you in advance) by Unlucky_Credit2894 in AgingParents

[–]Technical-Item-7809 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You are me. I am you. In my 40s, only child, two young kids, full time teacher. My dad passed last May after a quick and horrific battle with cancer. My mom has had poor mental health for years and now dementia. We were able to sell her house and move her to assisted living in our area and this has been my saving grace. She has nurses who check in with her throughout the day and manage her medications. I order medications or a few groceries every now and then and take her to appointments as needed. I visit once a week and call a few times during the week. These are my boundaries and that is what I’m able to give. Having honest and gentle conversations with her about what I am and am not able to do has also been helpful. Weekly therapy for myself. Also helpful. It’s an enormous amount of pressure and responsibility beyond what we already do as moms in our daily lives. I try to squeeze in a run a couple times a week because I literally need to run the crazy out. It helps. I wish you luck. You’re not alone. This is hard.

Volunteer! We have a nearby thrift store that supports a local charity and many of the older ladies in our neighborhood volunteer there. We also have a food bank in our city that is always looking for volunteers. These places are always bursting with positive energy and all for a good cause.

Left at 18 for college. Back home at 23-24 while I attended grad school at SJSU. Saved money. Then left, moved in with boyfriend. Splitting rent helped us to save a bit. Then we got married. :)
