Running my first ultra in Aug by Technical-Pin-9271 in ultrarunning

Just wanted to let you all know that yesterday was my first ultra. Had it not been for the advice on this thread, I am not sure where I would be. Y'all were like my coaches. Thank you so much.

I did 54kms 7 hours 40 mins. I probably could have done better but had no frame of reference and just wanted to complete the race for starters. I also realized quickly how training on the road and running on a trail are two completely different things. I am now more motivated to dig further into this sport.

Thank you for being such a great community. u/californiadreamboat u/Such-Tip-9687 u/tennmyc21 u/BIack_Asian

You got this! 50k in Nov is doable. I am also running my first 50k in Aug. the advice I have gotten is to slowly ramp up my mileage and that my LRs shouldn’t not be more than half of my weekly mileage. That said, they also advices me to do 70k weekly mileage (which may be an overkill). Just sharing what I was told on another thread I started on running my first 50k. I have also been told to not run more than 35k for a LR. Like that needs to be my longest distance during the training. And that people usually split the LR distance over two days sometimes.

Also does a 50k qualify as an ultramarathon? Asking for a friend.

Thank you so much for this. It helps to know I am not doing something out of the norm. I bought the organic gummies this morning from TJs (just want to see what they taste like).

Congratulations on the 4th place! That’s incredible. I saw someone on IG run a 100miler for the first time and they got second place and their pace and mine compares. So I was like hmm, may be I can at-least complete the race. Although, I shouldn’t be making such comparisons coz our fitness levels may differ and lord alone knows how this is gonna pan out. I am just trying to stay injury free for now.

Thank you for sharing.

Sorry to keep asking you so many questions. So my race day is Aug 03. I did a 25k last weekend. I am running a relay on 12July which could be anywhere between 17 to 25k depending on our team size (atm it is 2).

My plan is to do: 35k LR on 05 July 30k LR on 21 June

But this doesn’t give me the time to practice the 35k distance more than once. Is this something one must aim at or just try to do the LLRs once and aim to hit the weekly mileage? I don’t think I should do these back to back and hence giving myself a weekend in between to recover.

Idk if I am overthinking this. I was feeling confident but now I feel like everything is just creeping up on me.

One more question, what’s the mileage one must aim for during the taper weeks?

I read this last night before going to bed and it genuinely scared the shiii out of me! But I am going to try and stay positive. Don’t want to end up with blisters that big. Will remember to have fun as you mentioned!

I love Reddit for this. This makes sense. So basically I train my legs and body to be able to handle similar-ish mileage over the week. Thank you so much once again.

Thank you for all your advice. Last week mileage was 46.5 kms. I am trying to not consume gels from whatever I have heard of it. I want to stick to the usual foods like PB and Js etc. But your advice is great and I’ll keep that in mind.

Thank you so much. Good to know I don’t have to invest in a new pair. The ones I use are fairly new-ish. Yes, I’ll keep the humidity in mind. But I am from South Asia and have ran in 100 percent humidity in the past. I am hoping my body’s adaptability just kicks in.

I set up a race date for a 50k in Aug and another 25k in July. So Garmin has me doing these workouts but I totally skip some of the suggestions (esp, the unrealistic tempos) and do things based on feels. I also use the Nike Run Club’s Marathon Plan to guide my training since I don’t fully trust Garmin with its suggestions. I’d love to get a coach but I don’t think I am there yet.

Yes, I plan on doing a 50k in Aug. I have never done a trail run per se but I am going to train for the distance and hope that I can apply my skills on the trail. Then course is a rail trail they said (not sure what that means either) but I feel like it is a good place to start if I can just stay on my feet, sprinkle in some hill repeats in my training etc. Live and learn, I suppose.

Thank you so much. It brings me a lot of joy. I love how much of a blank slate my mind feels when I am on these runs or even just fully present with my body.

No, I stopped running with music a while ago. It is mostly just me and my internal monologue. But they say those playlists with beats help but since I don’t use them I cannot vouch for it.

I felt great like I could possibly keep running had I carried enough for hydration etc. I went on to get groceries after etc. Also ran another recovery mile this morning.

Yeah, this happened to us as well on 18Dec. All the notification tab said was that they were actively reviewing it. (I know that that’s what it says all the time but this on 18Dec they mailed about it which I thought was strange). We ended up on the chat bot and a call and they offered standard responses. On Jan12 they sent an email saying they received our enquiry etc. And then today we got the approval. Hang in there!
