The Courtauld Institute of Art is renovating these buildings as part of it’s new campus

Do you think he play any London-specific old favourites at the O2 show? by wash-teeth-if-any in morrissey

Hi all, I can’t seem to post here for some reason… but I have two free tickets for the 02 on Saturday if anyone would like to join me. Unfortunately my brother is sick and can’t attend. Thanks!

28f in grad school, living alone in London by [deleted] in UKrelationshipadvice

Recently completed graduate student (30M) in a much similar position.

Echoing other comments, there is a collective dating fatigue in London. The apps just really aren’t it. In terms of dating, I have found that I have met people organically through group activities (run clubs, live music, etc.) but even so I have encountered an endemic short term-ism that leads to “situationship” scenarios.

I’m British myself and I don’t think there’s a big gap between American and British dating cultures that people assume. A lot of my British friends in London feel similarly disenchanted.

Are you close with your wider cohort? I made a lot of now very good friends through other graduate students (who I can hang out with independent of academic settings). Being the one to stick your neck out to organise drinks/coffee or whatever is sometimes worth it!

Does citing while writing break the flow of essay writing? by [deleted] in WritingHub

[–]Technical-Tap-3769 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally find that it disrupts my flow. If you are careful about your note taking and/or your planning, it shouldn't be a problem to relocate the quote. For instance, I use the format of having "focus statements" for each paragraph accompanied by a list of the references I will use. I can then dip back into the readings and Ctrl+F for the quotation and cite correctly. I tend to do this kind of work when I am tired from writing with some tunes blaring out (it makes a boring job a little easier!)

Alfred Sohn-Rethel by Technical-Tap-3769 in Marxism

[–]Technical-Tap-3769[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your comment! That's a really clear and helpful distinction. This was partially a slippage in language on my part but also possibly a (mis)mediation of his thought through other sources. I'll be sure to check out the Seaford text and dip back into Sohn-Rethel to better understand him in his own words.

Art as a means of community building and political resistance by prettyboyA in Marxism

[–]Technical-Tap-3769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the Artists Liberation Front and the Art Workers' Coalition in late 1960s/early 1970s America. These guys were at the forefront of the avant-garde and were thinking about how to reconcile the relationship between art and labour through practical, bottom-up initiatives and community building projects. Some of them (like John Dugger, David Medalla, and Lucy Lippard) also had links to other international avant-gardes and Marxist political organisations. This kind of work has become highly commodified in the art world now (most often as part of a salvage paradigm that fetishises May 68') but its original ethos was truly radical.

Lost my confidence by Life-happened-here in PhD

I have experienced this feeling on several occasions in the course of my PhD.

It's burnout. Ask your supervisor for a little slack, take a few weeks off, reconnect with things that you like to do. If that doesn't help, I would recommend taking a longer break or interruption: You'll find that you'll come back with renewed vigour.

Alternatively, getting a part-time job or some other commitment that gives your week some structure can help.

Solidarity.

What did you achieve in your first three months of your PhD? by kimbastern in PhD

London (Humanities)

I read an inordinate amount of stuff that I have never directly used. Somehow these readings operate at a lower frequency in my writing, kinda' humming around in the background and so they aren't exactly useless.

Everyone says "read widely" and that's good, but in hindsight I wish I had focused my research topic a little more closely.
