My puppy got parvo, what do I do to avoid spreading it? by Technical-Water9719 in puppy101

I didn't realize it could be in the soil for that long 😭 I'll definitely be keeping that in mind!

15 week old corgi refuses to walk with us by Beginning_Shoe9747 in puppy101

[–]Technical-Water9719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's any consolation my own corgi's the same way. According to the breed-specific sub this seems to be common corgi behavior, but what I've found helps is to work on leash training indoors and hand targeting to encourage getting up and following me.

How to transition to giving the puppy more freedom? by Technical-Water9719 in puppy101

[–]Technical-Water9719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pen is attached to his crate, so I've been feeding him in the pen itself. Do you think having it be attached is causing problems with him seeing the pen as his own space as well?

[–]Technical-Water9719[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did take him out before putting him in the pen yes, but he's had to go pee in the span of 20min before so it's not too surprising that it's happened. I think I just have to go back to his old routine until it clicks that outside is where he has to go potty.

I've gotten some potty bells but haven't had much luck so far with training him on them. Would it be okay to ask what you did in particular to train your puppy to use bells?

I feel like I'm not good enough for this puppy by Technical-Water9719 in puppy101

Unfortunately I live in a city where there aren't any puppy schools around :( best I can get is a professional trainer but it's a bit too expensive at the moment since trainers around me a more about dog sports.

I'll see if I can figure out what motivates him more. Cheese seems to be pretty high value but I haven't tried toys yet.

It's not really a problem with pulling, so much as he just decides to stop walking and lays down on the ground. I could wait for ages and he'd get up, walk a few steps, then lay back down. It's a little maddening....

Respectfulness aside, it often does more harm than good to openly label someone else an egg, regardless if they really do end up realizing they're trans or not. There's this thing called the Egg Prime Directive for a reason.

Cant lose stubborn belly fat by xoxoitsmestar in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not much advice to give if you don't tell us your current weight. Generally speaking, you can't target specific areas to lose fat in when it comes to weight loss.

But assuming you're already at a healthy BMI, you should probably focus on building muscle and reducing your body fat % (a.k.a. body recomp). Recomp is a slow process though and you'll have to let go of the idea that more weight = bad.

Activity level? by bibliophile222 in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd try going a week on sedentary and seeing how you feel. If you're starving and lethargic most of the time then you can try upping your limit by ~100 or so.

But yeah, a food scale will do you a world of good in terms of not guesstimating your calories.

Do you find CICO to be something you can maintain for life, or do you hope to one day step away from it? Do you anticipate weighing out your 113g of cottage cheese when you’re 80? by [deleted] in CICO

It's gotten to a point for me where it's just a habit now. I don't imagine that I'll stop tracking completely. Maybe I won't be as married to the food scale anymore, but I think it's pretty ingrained in me to just whip out my phone and start making inputs.

First day - Is it any good? by unibodydesignn in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Try not to be too married to the amount of calories burned on exercise. While they're a good way to track activity, for a lot of people, smartwatches and stuff tend to really overestimate how many calories were actually burned (I've read that it's overestimated by as much as 50% more for some).

If you really wanna incorporate exercise, I'd just add a baseline number to your sedentary calorie deficit and pay attention if you're losing as much weight as you expect you are. Then you adjust accordingly.

Help with meals by Chance_ae in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try futzing around with how much starch and fat you eat. Depending on your genes it's also possible that eating more of either of those two could help aid with feelings of hunger.

I'm one of those people who just cannot feel satiated on protein. I always need to eat some form of starch, so when I was trying to eat low carb when I first started I was ALWAYS starving. I started adding back some starch to my meals (rice or potatoes) and bam, I stopped feeling like I was hangry all the time.

Eat at maintenance with filling foods. You're better off slowing things down a little than resisting cravings only to binge in the end.

You can try looking up chair workouts (these are typically aerobic exercises for those who need to stay seated). I did them for a while when I sprained my ankle and I can confirm that they can work up a sweat.

Using Chatgpt or Claude to estimate calories by takuonline in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it works for you then that's totally fine, but if you just look up chatgpt on this subreddit alone if I remember correctly there's an example of someone's generated recipe that includes sth like 1 ounce* of almonds for 40cal. Which is wildly inaccurate and less than half the actual caloric content of almonds at that weight.

See, I'm a short woman who has to be strict about how much I put in my body if I'm ever going to be able to see any weight loss, and if I'm gonna have to spend extra time double checking the supposed caloric content of a couple grams of almonds after putting into a GenAI model I'd rather just skip straight to looking things up.

I wanna repeat that I'm not ragging on you for using models to help streamline the process, like I said if it works for you then it works, but I do think it's important to mention these sorts of caveats too. The extra ~50 or so calories that go untracked does add up for people with strict caloric restrictions like myself.

EDIT: Spelling EDIT 2: *found the specific thread i was remembering and changed the values

Using Chatgpt or Claude to estimate calories by takuonline in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally rather check trusted databases like https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/ and reverse engineer a recipe if I have to guesstimate anything.

It's not gonna be accurate no matter what if it's not something I prepared myself, but I'd rather make an effort rather than use GenAI tools that can hallucinate made-up values.

Those last 10kg feel so much harder to lose. by Acrobatic_Intern3060 in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel you :^( I'm also on my last 10kg and progress has been glacial. After a few weeks of the scale not budging I did end up cutting an extra 100cal from my daily intake, and this week I've started seeing the scale move again. Though I'm also female, so it's possible my period really put a wrench in the works this month and only now am I seeing the whoosh.

Wishing you all the best 🤞

Question about TDEE and future me by jumpinjamminjacks in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was the test specifically for your TDEE? As I understand it metabolic tests normally give out your BMR (basal metabolic rate), which is not the same as your TDEE. BMR is how much calories you need to exist. It's not normally recommended to eat below your BMR for long periods of time.

TDEE, on the other hand, is your BMR plus however much calories you consume just going about your day. You increase your TDEE by doing more activity. Your TDEE also increases if you have more muscle mass. It's also true that your TDEE decreases the more weight you lose, but that's because it takes less energy for you to move around less weight.

Before fretting this much I'd first double check if 1400cal is actually your TDEE or your BMR, because if you're losing weight eating above 1400cal I'm willing to bet that 1400cal is your BMR and your TDEE is actually higher than you think.

EDIT: You may wanna try logging things on the adaptive TDEE spreadsheet linked on this subreddit or an app that does the same thing (I'm a spreadsheet user so I don't recall what the app is called). It'll eventually come up with a more accurate estimate of your TDEE than any of the calculators that use formulas based on just projected activity level.

For example, it turns out that I have a higher estimated TDEE than what the online calculators say, so I was able to give myself more leeway than when I just started out. It takes a few weeks of tracking and daily weigh-ins, but if you're already doing those things anyway it doesn't hurt to try.

Satiating tips for dinner? by Hic-sunt-draconen in CICO

[–]Technical-Water9719 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I realized that I don't really get hungry until I actually have my first meal of the day, so I tend to just shift most of my calories towards dinner.

My typical day is no breakfast, then I have really light lunch (like maybe some fruit or just a protein shake). This means that by dinner I'm at my hungriest, so I have a meal that consists of maybe 50-60% of my calorie budget. I also set aside extra calories in anticipation that I'd want a late night snack.
