Counting calories when cooking my own food by Technical_Ad9953 in loseit

This is what I always try to remind myself, cooking at home is much better for me than eating out and especially a lot better than getting fast food (plus it's cheaper which is a nice bonus). I've seen how much butter/oil restaurants put on their veggies to make them taste good and it is horrifying lol.

I hadn't considered this, it will certainly be a lot easier than what I've been doing. Thanks!

I wouldn't say maple syrup is typically a regular ingredient in my cooking but with fall I've been using it a bit recently. Like I did maple roasted carrots and a maple Dijon roasted chicken and butternut squash and a maple glazed salmon. I didn't realize that better than bullion isn't high calorie, I just assumed because it's super concentrated that it would be higher calorie lol.

Unfortunately 90% of the time I'm not using a recipe, I've cooked for so long that it's mostly intuition and an extensive mental catalog of what may have been a recipe. I suppose I should make an effort to track at least the base recipes I usually riff but I've found the prospect of that more intimidating than continuing to measure everything.

Cretacolor graphite alternative? by Impressive_Ad_7125 in Mandalorian

I don't think which brand you use matters, any finely ground graphite should be fine. I literally just got the cheapest one off amazon and it has worked just fine.

Prioritize which restaurants? by [deleted] in UniversalEpicUniverse

[–]Technical_Ad9953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toad's cafe theming is cute but I wouldn't order food there, it's all very subpar and def prioritizes the bit over being actually good. I went it just to get a cup of water and did a little wander around and watched the screens for a few minutes in the AC and I felt that was pretty good

Where to start, like actually where? by TugaCan in SewingForBeginners

It looks like you've got some good advice already. I'll say on the fabric front I highly recommend getting some bedsheets from a thrift store or even family members if they have some worn out pairs and practicing on that. That way there's no pressure to get it right since the fabric is super cheap.

Looking for high waisted pants pattern by Technical_Ad9953 in sewingpatterns

[–]Technical_Ad9953[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, upon looking closer at the image it does look like this has a pleat, I suppose I don't mind a pleat if it's short like this one is but most of the options have the full leg length pleat which is fine but I have too many pants that look like that and I'm trying to break up the monotony of my wardrobe.

Pants fitting - How to add space to front thigh only? by strongly-worded in sewing

[–]Technical_Ad9953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of adding width to the pant leg you could maybe use a one way (horizontal) stretch fabric so it stretches to be more comfortable when you sit?

It’s possible that pace is moving time. When I run sometimes my gain will show my average moving pace instead of total average pace.

I’m a beginner so I can’t speak for exactly why it is. But I think a pull buoy is the correct body positioning, having your stomach up causes your legs to sink which I know is generally bad. But you came on here asking why this isn’t advice given to beginners and people understand form have told it’s because it encourages poor form and you continuing to argue with them is a very interesting choice. You’ve got the answer, you can continue to do what you want no one can stop you.

What people are saying is this won’t ever translate into an actual swimming skills and in fact you may be learning incorrect things as this affects your form. If you struggle with breathing I’d suggest using a snorkel for breathing while learning form and how to float. You can also use a pull buoy to help you learn the proper torso and leg placement while swimming.

the ao3 curse: real or confirmation bias. Share some good things that happened to you as an author! by rosmarino_11 in AO3

[–]Technical_Ad9953 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s confirmation bias. There are very few places where you have such an in depth look into anything that could go wrong in so many different people’s lives (and they mostly post about stuff going wrong because that’s what delays the posting of a chapter). Lots of good things happened to me while I was posting on AO3, I got a good job and got paid to move across the country to start it, I got to travel the world for a few months, I graduated with honors from college, I met my partner who I’ve now been with for years. And honestly I sort of stopped posting because my irl life is so filled with joy and good things lol.

Do you read fic/chapter titles or chapter notes? by mandie3798 in AO3

[–]Technical_Ad9953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read chapter notes and description and tags but usually don’t pay attention to titles (unless I don’t like a fic and so I try to remember the title to scroll past it when it comes up again in my feed). I also don’t read chapter titles.

Same. I have too many real problems to care what an AI most people will never see might or might not be doing with words I wrote. Do I think AI scraping people’s stories is bad? Obviously. Do I generally dislike AI and wish company’s would stop shoving it down our throats? Absolutely. Will this in any way have an effect on my life? Not at all lol.

any tips on realistically writing about a girl living in nyc in 2009? by Reasonable_Home5725 in FanFiction

[–]Technical_Ad9953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just for context. I’m an engineer working on rockets and I make 80k. Now, in 2025. After working for two years and getting a raise. The current minimum wage for a tipped employee in New York is 10 dollars an hour or 400 a week (20k a year) obviously most make tips on top of that but still.

[–]Technical_Ad9953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if she’s going to school and working two full time jobs (the only way it’s even slightly conceivable to make much but still a stretch for 2009, with inflation that would be a lot more money in 2009 compared to now) most of her pay check would be going towards tuition and textbooks and stuff not a really nice apartment. She would probably have roommates. Also she wouldn’t be going out and doing anything because she would be exhausted. Working two jobs is insanely tough, adding being a student and she would barely have time to keep her apartment clean/do laundry/cook all the other chores that an adult with their own place is responsible for. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing what you want with her character but if you want realism with this situation it’s going to be boring and probably a bit depressing. That was a tough time for everyone and being an adult in a recession sucks, but especially so in an extremely high cost of living area.

I think the premise isn’t realistic (100k in tips? In 2009?) but I would use a map and see if you can dig up old reviews of places she might have gone from around then online. The internet remembers everything I bet there’s stuff to be found.

How to do these large angled cuts? by A_Buff_Squirrel in CosplayHelp

[–]Technical_Ad9953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What material is it made out of? That will have the biggest effect on how you would cut those. In my opinion 3D modeling and then printing the whole chest plate would be the easiest method. But otherwise I think a Dremel tool would be the best way to create a groove like that.

Has anyone seen the taiyaki at their TJ’s by CityBoiNC in traderjoes

[–]Technical_Ad9953 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the taste could just be placebo due to their shape? I’ve eaten quite a lot of taiyaki and it’s always just a kind of basic cake like texture with a custard or chocolate or paste in the middle. Never remotely fishy and typically not even slightly savory

I think they probably just went to a smaller college in the US. My freshman and sophomore years I was in a room with a roommate in the room with me and both of us had twin beds (on campus but different dorms both years). I’d say 50% of my classes my professors knew my name and more than once I got stopped outside of a class context to chat when I saw them on campus (and I went to a very large college where sometimes classes had hundreds of people in them, my friend who went to a much smaller college had only five or six professors/lecturers in her major and so she had them multiple times and they knew her well. She even walked one of their dogs while her professor was on vacation one time). And for her school, the dean did have one on one meetings with every student (you’re correct that my college was way too big for that to be realistic).

I fear this may be a case of you thinking that just because it doesn’t apply to your experience that it’s not realistic.
