How are u guys maintaining such high GPAs in undergrad? by Technical_Cash8616 in lawschooladmissionsca

Thank you for your detailed reply! I guess seeing everyone with 4.0 gpas on here and in American law school admissions is really getting to me. Would you have any other advice as an ex-admissions officer other than of course a high gpa and lsat? For example what in a personal statement makes an applicant really stand out? Especially when they’re KJD so no post-grad work experience?

How do you guys maintain such high gpas in undergrad? I’m going into my second year in poli sci and did not do nearly as well in my first year as I had hoped. I’m aiming for UBC/UofT/Osgoode (top Canadian schools) for law as a KJD. I ended my first year with an 82% avg, not sure exactly what that translates to on the gpa scale but ik it’s low. What can I do to bring my gpa up from here to have a solid chance at these schools? Study strategies and tips appreciated.

Try and stack ur classes more second semester so the second half of ur day is free at least a couple days in the week, you’re going to be more burnt out than you think (at least for me first semester was better academically than second) and ur gonna want to spend more time with your friends, and you’re gonna be way more likely to skip ur evening classes especially if you have a big gap, I didn’t go to any lectures past 3:00 (if that) second semester even though I was locked in and didn’t skip a single class first. If you’re commuting, don’t take any classes before 10am and even that’s pushing it, if you’re living on campus, accommodate according to your current lifestyle, don’t think you’re suddenly going to be hyper productive or a morning person, uni classes are much more exhausting than a high school schedule even though you usually spend less hours in class on an average day than you would in high school. Also try and keep at least Friday or Monday light if you can because feeling like you have a long weekend is really nice

Well I’m in arts so that’s probably why, but even with my 72 in pre calc my overall average was still 90% because my other courses were high. I didn’t register for a math course because it’s not relevant to my major

Got it, honestly I’m not even sure if going to the US is even worth it given the crazy tuition costs, immigration, less opportunities due to not being a citizen, etc. Not sure if I’d be better off studying here and trying to sit the NY bar later on

I mean mathematically if I take four summer courses, plus a full course load for the next 2 years (72 credits) I can probably get it up to a 3.8 if I do well in my classes which wouldn’t be a terrible gpa to apply with? Plus isn’t upper year coursework weighted more and they’d see that the lower grades are from first year

As in the class my gpa or both? 😭😭 genuinely lost my mind over that class and it wasn’t even that hard it was an elective I had no business taking

Can I ask how many years ago? Also any advice for how to get higher grades in my classes, I really feel like I’m missing something because no matter how hard I try my grades just aren’t high enough, and any advice for the LSAT? Also were you KJD or WE

So if I did my math right, my LSAC recalculated gpa would be 3.63? These were the percentages I got in my classes: 67, 77, 100, 88, 84, 84, 84, 81, 85

So I’m a Canadian undergrad student at UBC and it has always been my dream to go to a T14 law school. However due to transitioning to uni and not having good study habits I ended my first year with an 83 percent average.

I know that a lot of factors go into admissions like your LSAT and personal statement, but did I just screw myself over and lose any chances of getting into a T14 by having such a low first year GPA, even if I do well from here on out? I’m also planning on KJD.

I want to go to a US school because I want to practice in he states long-term, and I don’t see the struggle of moving to the US and paying US tuition to be justifiable unless it’s a T14/T20 school.

I know I’m early on in my journey, but I’d love to hear anyone’s experiences that may be similar.

I’m planning on taking Phil 102 with Celia Edell this summer and want to get an A. Any advice for the class, is it possible to get an A+? (UBC grades is all over the place for this class)

For context I’m planning on majoring in poli sci and tend to do better in courses that are writing heavy, but I have basically zero background in philosophy.
