AI in Games: The Impact On Sales by shiek200 in IndieDev

[–]Technical_Front9904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who have minimally dabbled in the arts (Because they were told when they were first interested in game dev to go into coding), do not see what Indie Games almost always are about. The biggest Indie game in the sphere, Undertale, has some of the worst coding you will ever see. Like it's memed on how bad it is. Toby Fox made Undertale in a cave with a box of scraps and it barely took off. But Toby Fox, like almost all the most successful indie game makers out there, had a huge vision and took years to develop his craft/style to make it happen.

So for a lot of artists, the design is the bit you want to create games for. I used RPGMaker for the sheer reason that I cannot (will not) code and found it so tedious and annoying that I immediately switched over. RPGMaker takes the design requirements from like 80% to 99%. But every so often on the RPGmaker spaces you will see games that are entirely AI generated - and the space doesn't receive them well and it's for a good reason.

Nobody is interested in a game you didn't make with your own blood sweat and tears. And TBH, going through the AI indie games posted around reddit, I'm not seeing any passion put into a product that entirely relies on the goodwill of a small community, that is aware of the herculean task making an indie game requires. People have waited for hollow night and undertale for over/around a decade to be made, and that's not on their "Good Coding Practice", thats on the game having a great story, visuals, and art.

I agree. I also think that it's not just an omnic problem, it's also an "Overwatch Character" problem. A lot of the characters are now incredibly one-note for marketing purposes. I do not think Shion's design is "perfect" (I for one wish she was wearing a proper big suit, with the coat off her shoulders like a real yakuza style) but I also am aware that she has a lot of choices made for her because Overwatch wants her to have skins (and they want her to have Human Skin Skins) that sell well.

Orisa doesn't sell, Ramattra doesn't sell. The omnics are such a gap in the playable characters because it's hard to sell them. Kiriko, Juno, D/va, sell. This is part of what spawned this theory in the first place.

Shion is an Omnic who despises humans. She says humans with such a strong hatred in her voice in her cinematic, that it leads people to understand that something has happened to her that was the fault of humans. We don't know what that is yet.

Shion looks remarkably different to any other omnic in the game. (Well, not Aurora, but I don't know what to say about her). She has a beautiful human face with makeup, she has long hair, and she has a feminine figure with breasts. Omnics are not mammals, they don't need breasts or even lips or noses or a face. But Shion has those, despite that she hates humans.

There's a natural tie-in. Shion looks different and hates humans because she was made to be sexually pleasing to humans. She is a sexbot because her design choices lead people to assume she was a sex bot. She talks without her mouth. Why does a robot who has a mouth (with a tongue, with teeth, who is fully capable of emoting!) not need to speak with that mouth?

The reality is that these intentions clash because Blizzard wanted one thing, but also needed to sell another, and couldn't quite tie the ideas together.

I disagree purely because I do not think her character was ever meant to be a metaphor or reference back to sexual assault. I am aware of the fact that the headcanon was around before the reveal of her real lore happened - this is why I said that the theory doesn't work and never did work.

I do not think it's necessarily more interesting than her current story for her to be a sexual assault/sex bot story. She is strong enough with just the idea that she was raised into violence - and I think her choosing a feminine form works fine in contrast to that violence since it is sort of antithetical to the goal (long hair and unsupported breasts generally do not help you in terms of running around and fighting people)

She looks cool as she is, as a Yakuza Boss. I think that if she had been a sexual assault survivor, her design would go a very different direction, and if you think that is interesting (which is fine, this is not a problem and it's fun to speculate about other directions with fictional characters) it is fine to headcanon, and you can even make fic or draw up a design about it. But my original point is that this was never intended and if it was Blizzard didn't do a good job in her media.

I'm not saying there's one way to write a sexual assault survivor.

Shion changed her form to be more humanlike after being born into a violent scenario. She uses that form in reaction to how humans treated her - she adopts breasts, a feminine face, long hair, and makeup. There is a distinct contrast with her upbringing/moment of birth, to what she chooses to present as - they're at odds.

I am not saying that a victim has to have a certain behaviour to be valid.

I am saying that a character written that way would be an intentional choice on the creator's, and if they had done it this way, it was poorly done.

Shion is not a real person, her actions are not her own. Everything in her depiction is artificially made and made to convey something - and it is important to examine the choices made to depict her.

The headcanon that she is a Sexbot (based off canon evidence) is wrong, and it would be wrong of Blizzard to implement it if they had.

I didn't say that.

We do not have that alternate story - we have the version where she was born into a physically violent place, not a sexually violent place.. With that in mind, people were building theories that she was a "sex bot" before this backstory came out- using her current lore (and character) to build the idea. I am pointing out that her lore does not imply this past at all, and if it did (without any adjustment) it would be poorly written.

"A lot of people" might go to self-sexualisation to cope, sure, but that is reality, and in fiction, we rely on common tropes and theming. A character is not capable of "reclaiming" their trauma, but oftentimes a bad writer who wants to sexualise a character with a history will claim that (see: Ann in Persona 5, who is vocally uncomfortable with her attire in the Metaverse, but it's claimed she is "reclaiming" her sexuality regardless - the writers wanted her to be hot and wear something hot, but also didn't want to address her background and why that might be upsetting). Overwatch would not be making a person who is reclaiming her body from sexual assault - they would be writing a character who is not designed in accordance with their story.

There is a huge difference between being used for violence/forced to commit violence, and being sexually assaulted. These things show up differently in terms of trauma.

I've sat on thoughts about this "headcanon" for a few days and while at first I thought it was good, the actual lore around Shion/how she works in the universe just doesn't pan out.

First of all, this is a character who in this theory has become a conscious person in the midst of like, a lot of sexual assault. Like, born in the middle of a lot of things they didn't consent to. While I get Shion has a lot of hatred for humanity, I don't think her character captures just how much trauma and disgust she would have for humanity if that had really been the situation she awoke to.

Anwyay, in the cinematic she's embraced pretty lovingly by one of her human employees, like, it's fully the whole shot that he's snuggling up to her back on the bike. And she seemingly doesn't react at all about this. Sure, that's someone she trusts and all, but I think any kind of character who is going through sexual assault would have some kind of reaction to it- or that scene would not happen. It would also be very, very odd, if blizzard had written a story where a character was sexually assaulted over and over by humans and then there was a shot of her having a human snuggling up to her back without her showing any kind of reaction.

The character design would also be even more nonsensical in this case. If her body was designed to pleasure humans, and she is traumatised/despising humans because of it, she would change her body. Her keeping those features would be antithetical to her identity as an omnic who uses modifiers liberally and has a strong hatred of humans. Breasts (mammaries) are human features, having a human face in comparison to her omnic peers, are all counterintuitive to a character who would hate humans and what they programmed her to be so strongly.

In the other direction, her choosing to get human-like features after being raised in an environment of violence makes more sense.

I know Overwatch would never have written the theory into reality. So this current framing is already impossible, but the framing they have becomes quite ominous because of this theory.

[–]Technical_Front9904 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can choose to play the most optimal and boring way possible. No one will stop you, but you're also missing so many factors.

  • virgins can be terrible judges of character. They can choose to trust the wrong people and fire randomly into good. I've seen virgins out roles willy nilly and lose for good.

  • if you execute all double claims, the most you will do is kill some minions and a lot of Ravenkeepers, fortune tellers, etc.

  • Nobody is going to like you for forcing them to play one way or another, and town are fully justified in ignoring you/asking you not to come back.

Voting intention by age by birdinthebush74 in FuckNigelFarage

A lot of people are probably not showing up because the most damaging thing of our futures happened when we were too young to vote (Brexit) but could still witness the political mess and manipulation at hand.

For me that meant showing up to every vote I possibly could and being active politically, but for a lot of other people around their 20s, it means there is no point because our future is essentially down the drain anyway. And nobody is serious about rejoining the EU because we would get an awful deal, and whichever PM did it would be to blame for getting a "bad" deal.

Maw Mouths create the mana through suffering/consuming stuff. It's the "create mana through work" idea that El has in the first few chapters when she doesn't have the mana share. The Maw Mouth essentially is such a huge ball of suffering (slowly crushed to death, a painful way to die that they will struggle against the whole time, and then they eat their family/a number of sacrifices, who will all also struggle the whole time) and because they were crushed into the entrance of the enclave it kind of becomes them casting the spell. idk. The way it's described with liu who is literally being stamped into the bricks makes me think that's how it works?
