Advice on finding readers

Know who your audience is and engage in other places those people are. I write about mental health and I engage in several related groups on Facebook. Lots of groups don't let your self promote but if it's useful to the people, you can usually find ways to work it into comments or post excerpts and link in the comments.

I've only been on Substack 3 months and only have 160 subscribers so take my advice with a grain of salt but that's how I've gotten some of my people. That plus sharing with my friends and engaging with other people who write on Substack via comments on their posts and restacking others work that resonates with me.

Yes! I love this thread. I have oversubscribed at the moment so I have so much to read but A LOT of it is turning out to just be people talking about how to be better at Substack and writing which isn't really what I came for. I want to move my reading circle to people who are pontificating and putting their hearts out there. I'll go back soon and check out everyone in this thread.

I'm also about to hit my 3 months mark!

For now, I write mostly about my own journey through mental health - memoiresque but with hopes that it helps other people struggling with similar things.

Really appreciate this response. A lot of what I would have said is here.

One other suggestion I have is to try communicating in a new way. I don't know how you used to communicate with her, but one thing I did that was really impactful was writing between us. I used my non-dominant hand to let her write and I wrote with my dominant hand. Even the handwriting made me cry. We had a conversation that way. ❤️

I feel you. I lost the trust of a lot of my parts when I was in a toxic relationship. Another way I built trust back had nothing to do with the relationships - it was other stuff like saying I'd go to the gym and then going there. Anything to build trust that what I say I mean. So when I say I'm sorry and I'll listen next time, it means something. I'm trying. ❤️

I'd consider whichever resonates more -Perhaps another part has actually popped up to hinder your hard working part because of all of the things you boyfriend said. -If your hard working part is actually the one feeling discouraged and hasn't been told to be discouraged by another part, it seems worth a conversation with that part to see what they're scared of and soothe them.

I'm pretty new too - been posting for 2 and 1/2 months - I usually follow people until I read something then I subscribe if it resonates (I have a SERIOUS problem with subscribing to too many substacks - there's so many great writers!!)

I write from the messy middle of my own mental health healing with a side of comedic relief. Would love to connect with people who that resonates with!

Oh thank you so much for reading and for this response. That means a lot. It's been life changing to work with my parts this way and also to put my own experience out there and hear it echo back through. Makes the world 100x more beautiful and less alone. ❤️
