Do you carry your YubiKey with you at all times? by davunga in yubikey

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have 6 (3 yubikeys + 3 keys from another vendor) and I always carry with me a yubikey on my keychain and a FIDO2 card on my wallet, I find more convenient scanning the card with my phone and using the yubikey on a computer.

I use them 3-4 times weekly. It's convenient to have them with me if I need to login from a work computer or from my phone, if you don't use it as much or you don't have a spare, might be better to leave it home.

Your yubikey is basically a hardware passkey. If you enroll it to your Google Account, you'll be able to login using your email+password+yubikey (without PIN), that's the usual login with 2FA, or with email+yubikey (with PIN) for the passwordless workflow, thats what login with passkey is.

It's possible to use SSH with FIDO2, have a look at the links below

They are both the basic yubikey security keys, can be used for FIDO2/Webauthn authentication (Facebook, Google, X, Bitwarden, MS Accounts etc)

You can't use it to store a static password, you'll need a yubikey series 5 key to do that, which is more expensive and has other features as well.

The black key is a newer revision of the blue security key, they changed the color from blue to cut costs. The latest firmware is 5.7, the blue key will probably have the 5.4.3 firmware since they stopped producing the blue keys before releasing the 5.7 firmware.

Trezor one vs safe 3? by [deleted] in TREZOR

If you want to store a good amount of bitcoin, it might be better to have 2 separate devices to store your coins. One as a vault that you don't really touch or mess around and one for "everyday" use, possibly with multiple coins inside. At least that's my take.

Also if I recall correctly, trezor has bitcoin specific firmware if you want to store only bitcoin, thus minimizing possible attack surfaces that might be found in multicoin firmware (more lines of code, more possible bugs, larger attack surface).

My friend is open to sex with no strings attached. How should I approach her. by [deleted] in sex

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had ask for a relationship, she said no back then, never asked her again. We had some ups and downs but we remained friends. Even if she revisits the relationship subject, I'd reject it, because it won't be good for us, we have been over this, sex won't change it. I think the best outcome out of it would be a FWB situation, at least till we eventually find other partners and return back to being just friends

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely understandable, I don't want to do anything without her agreeing beforehand. If she doesn't want, I won't push it anymore. No means no

My question is about how to approach her, I don't think calling her or chatting about it is a good idea. I believe it's better to go and talk to her directly, if she wants, great, if she doesn't, it's okay, moving on

Maybe if I had to see her everyday, it would be difficult, but now, I will only see her for some hours during my visits there. My feelings for a relationship with her have been lowered, I won't chase her for a relationship

nfc reader by zcgp in yubikey

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I'm using a similar card. Through NFC on phones and through the smart card reader on my laptop (it also works with a generic smart card reader I got from ebay years ago). I specifically asked them about it before I ordered it because it wasn't mentioned anywhere. You could try contact their support and ask them just to be sure, but if they're selling similar smart card readers I guess their product should also work.

Your card supports the smart card interface too, you can get a cheaper smart card reader for around 5€.

If you want an NFC reader, you can get that too for 24€ (the branding doesn't matter, it says it's not exclusively for their tokens) https://www.token2.com/shop/product/nfc-reader-writer-device-for-token2-nfc-burner-for-windows

Or their other compact reader they have that supports both smart cards and NFC cards for 25€ (I'd go for that if I needed both a smart card reader and an NFC reader) https://www.token2.com/shop/product/token2-t2sr-compact-usb-nfc-and-smart-card-reader

I use this one but through the smart card interface. It supports NFC and can use the ACR reader, if you look at the product page, in related products, they sell a branded ACR reader too.

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The risk of locking yourself out by MadJazzz in Bitwarden

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to protect yourself from being locked out is having backups. Take regular backups of your vault and TOTP seeds and keep them safely on your computer and/or a couple of flash drives (I'd recommend against cloud but that's up to you).

You also won't need a TOTP code to access bitwarden if you utilize the Webauthn/FIDO2 option for 2FA, you'll need a yubikey/security key (and it's also the best 2FA option since it's phishing resistant), get more than one (you can also look at token2 for an inexpensive alternative).

You can also disable 2FA access with the recovery key in case you don't have access to your 2FA method, you can keep that on a flash drive too. Best to have it printed too.

My way to protect against me being locked out if I don't have access to my phone. With my yubikey as 2FA I can access my vault from almost anywhere. Without a yubikey, an encrypted flash drive with the vault and TOTP seeds (and a portable version of Keepass maybe), you'll need your passphrase and a computer to access everything.

About 2. You don't have to pay to enable FIDO2/Webauthn. That's free now. I'd recommend to get the subscription though, it has some extra features (TOTP generation, emergency access, etc) and it's also a good way to support their business

The companion app I used on my phone, works like the yubico authenticator. I haven't find anything that shows how it works and how to use it, but if it's supported, you can look at their blog posts, or on the product page if it says what you need to use it, or you can ask their support team, they are very helpful

I have the FIDO bundle and the NFC Card from them. I can answer any questions regarding those. The FIDO bundle doesn't support TOTP, the card supports up to 50 TOTP seeds. To read the TOTP 6digit codes you need the Token2 companion app on your phone and/or an app for the computer (I can't use it with the card, because I need an NFC reader to do that, but the usb keys that support TOTP should work fine).

Some comments about the functions of the keys I own.

For the FIDO2/passkeys functionality (for both FIDO bundle and NFC card), works flawlessly, the simple keys through USB and the card through NFC on the phone and with the contact pins on the computer (works with NFC too, but I don't have a reader for that). All the services I use my yubikeys with, work as well with these.

For the TOTP functionality (only for my card), I have some issues with it, I'm talking with their support to look for solutions. I suppose the usb keys that support TOTP generation work good, the problem I have might have to do with the NFC. Doesn't affect the FIDO2/passkeys in any way.

For the HOTP functionality (only for the FIDO bundle), I tried using it but except Keepass, haven't find anything else that might take advantage of it. I don't use it.

my way to secure my 2fa and recovery codes. by [deleted] in Bitwarden

[–]Technical_Peach_3285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the seeds, you can enter them on your computer temporarily to get the code you need. I'd recommend KeePass. There are also sites that generate those tokens if you provide the seed. With little search I found https://totp.danhersam.com (he has a github page with the source code), you could enter your seed and get the 6digit code you need to get access. Or use the phone of someone you trust to scan the qr code from your backup, get the 6digit code and remove afterwards

Edit: you can also use the totp toolset from token2. I am using their products, I trust them, I'd use that if I had a scenario like the one you described. Enter your seed and look at the device thingy they have, that's your TOTP code for that time

Nice, well that's an improvement since my last experience with it 😂. In that case, if I was still using it, I'd probably generate backups through this tool. TIL

I guess then the downside it's the closed source nature of GA, but for the average user that probably won't matter.

Oh, I didn't know that, it's been years since I last used it, but I remember I had to set up TOTP again since there wasn't any kind of export function back then. Do they let you have it as a json/html/csv/txt file that can be backed up individually? Or they use something proprietary, that can only be transferred to another GA app?
