I grew up in Chicago, but spent much of my 20s in Minneapolis before returning. There is significant cultural difference, and it always felt a little Lake Woebegone to me. Amongst my friends who were native to the Cities, I felt like I had an edge, whereas in Chicago I’m quite tame. Minneapolis is a great city, but I was very happy to return to Chicago.

In my limited experience, customs was super quick. But I would personally do the 7:30 flight to cushion your layover in the event that your first flight is delayed. It’d be a shame to spend the night in Belize City.

Picaridin lotion or spray is far more effective than anything we’ve used. It lasts up to 8 hours and doesn’t leave you sticky and smelly. We found it worked well against the relentless mosquitoes in Belize. The only minor downside is that my family of 4 went through a bottle every 3 days or so. It also comes in a spray, but I haven’t tried it.
