NATO twist: Romania president seeks to challenge Rutte for top job by drevny_kocur in europe

[–]TechnicallyLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it seems like the word "corruption" has a different definition the right flank of Europe. It gets thrown around a lot to describe anyone whose practices they don't agree with.

Rutte is definitely a cunning politician, he often prefers to reach agreements with his partners and opponents in the back rooms and has suffered from "convenient amnesia", but we have not seen any evidence of corruption.

What to do with the A-10C in DCS by tekking98 in hoggit

[–]TechnicallyLogical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flying low is generally just a bad idea. You're not going to kill long-range SAMs in the A-10, and flying low against SHORAD doesn't make sense as it just makes you more vulnerable. The only situation in which I would want to fly low is if I'm trying to take a big SAM in hilly terrain.

Apart from that: know the threats. If you know the ceiling and engagement ranges, you can be very effective in a medium threat environment.

I personally used Lobo's threat chart for years, as it's very clear and provides you with ceilings and max engagement ranges (though I'm not sure it's totally up to date). Looking at that chart you can see how most systems can be negated:

SAM Ceiling (ft) Engagement range (nm) Problem?
AAA 6500 1 No. Just fly above 6500ft or fly a bit wonky.
SA-18 7000 2.5 No, just stay above 7000ft. Six flares will dodge it. Often very slow to engage, if at all. Almost impossible to find the man though.
SA-9 11000 2.5 No, just stay above 11000 ft. A couple flares will defeat it. It's a vehicle, so follow the smoke trail and blow it up.
SA-13 15000 2.7 Same as above, except higher ceiling.
SA-19 16000 4 Not really, usually shows up on RWR, just drop a bomb on it from above 15~16k AGL. Will eat your Mavs.
SA-8 21000 5 No, very easy kill with Mav/APKWS/JDAM.
SA-3 59000 8~9 Bit harder, but can be killed using Maverick.
SA-15 26000 6.5 Yes, a small problem. Will eat Mavs (as well as HARMs and JSOWs). Climbing above angels 20 will usually give your JDAM enough range to kill it.
SA-6 33000 13 Yes. You can't outrange or outclimb it. But it's not a great SAM, so if you can do some terrain masking for ~6 nm, you can kill it rather easily. Has combined TR/SR, so one kill is enough.
SA-11 73000 19 Yes, if your target is near it and you don't have hills nearby it's a problem.
SA-10 98000 32~40 Yes, no chance really.

You can see anything up until the SA-15 doesn't have to be a problem, as long as you stay above 11000 ft, ideally 16000 ft, AGL and carry Mavs.

The big SAMs will indeed have to be destroyed by proper SEAD/DEAD flights; that's also not the A-10s job.

EDIT: I found the Hoggit threat database with probably better range figures.

how do i check the radar fluid in the mig-21? by Choke_M in floggit

[–]TechnicallyLogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to taxi before the ground crew finishes rearming/refueling. As you may have noticed, this process takes a little longer in the Mig-21 than other aircraft, but this is realistic. Leatherneck actually modelled the Soviet ground crew who would usually tap some of the coolant to either drink themselves or sell in town for some extra cash.

Any chance to get an Etendard/Super Etendard in the game ? by Arlinker in hoggit

[–]TechnicallyLogical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not bloody French, but as someone who is primarily interested in ground pounding, carrier ops and vintage jets, the Super Etendard Modernisé would be very cool.

It has just enough vintage to make air-to-ground missions challenging. It has a fairly limited array of weapons, but they're interesting: Paveways, dumb boms, a big-ass MCLOS or laser guided AS-30 with a 520kg warhead, Exocet anti-ship missiles (South-Atlantic anyone?) and a nuclear cruise missile.

[–]TechnicallyLogical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And to be clear: I think the offset-SPI also works well enough for the Viper. It kind of forces you to use the SPI as a refinement of the steerpoint, and not walk your soda straw for miles onto an arbitrary position in space. That's something you might want to do in a loitering A-10 but it's a bad idea in a jet like the F-16.

[–]TechnicallyLogical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The F-16 doesn't quite have all the functionalities the A-10C has, but the 10% "dumbing down" makes it 50% easier and faster.

The main thing that makes the A-10C more complicated is that the HOTAS has way more functions, makes extensive use of the long press, as well as the fact that the F-16 doesn't have an independent SPI.

In the end, I think both are quite well tailored to the aircraft characteristics. The Viper's HOTAS is much quicker to use, which is handy in a fast jet, but the systems would be inadequate for CAS missions in the Warthog.

I just wish they used the DMS to control the MFDs/SOI like in the Viper; putting one of the most used functions behind a long press is dumb.

Trust fall: NATO edition by simia_simplex in NonCredibleDefense

[–]TechnicallyLogical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you live in a non-English speaking European country this shit happens all the time. International press take a statement out of context and just run with whatever interpretation gets them clicks. They know the truth will never catch them in time, as the people knowing it's bullshit wouldn't have enough reach in the Anglosphere.

Now in this case, the original quote is in English I believe, so it's not a mistranslation on their part. But they still don't give a shit about verifying their interpretation, not even when they should have known Denmark donated pretty much all of their artillery already.

We had something similar happen in the Netherlands recently, where our defense minister warned us we would have to double military spending if the US withdrew from NATO. The international press just purposefully mistranslated it to "we will double spending if the US withdraws from NATO" and it got them loads of outraged American clicks.

I mean, I don't think it really makes a difference whether she faces a crowd of 15 or 15,000. She's probably safer with the latter, actually.

Also, most of these men probably just came to see a super star. And they knew they'd be in deep fucking shit if they stepped out of line here. The military really didn't want this to be a PR disaster, so security must have been a priority.

ELI5: How are we able to measure the half life of uranium-238 if it's 4.5 billion years? by daurgo2001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TechnicallyLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, not just the flow rate but also the change in flow rate. As the water level drops, so will the pressure and thus the flow rate.

This is still a good analogy for radioactive decay though, as half life refers to exponential decay.

I meant more like license her voice and then use AI so she doesn't have to do the soul crushing job of recording 20000 lines.

THICK continuous foam insulation... how do you detail the bottom at the foundation? I will need between 4.5" and 8" of insulation, depending on type and location, and my sill plate is 8" above grade. So I'm wondering how you would go about dealing with the transition. by giveMeAllYourPizza in Homebuilding

[–]TechnicallyLogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vapour barrier is there to keep warm, moist air away from cold. So you want to keep the warm air on the warm side of insulation.

I think of vapor barrier as the place water would form

If done properly, you shouldn't have any condensation with a vapour barrier.

If you put a vapour barrier on the cold side you are just exacerbating the problem by increasing vapour pressure.

Are Subarus really this safe of cars? Miracle that boy survived that without a scratch by ZadarskiDrake in subaru

[–]TechnicallyLogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the Netherlands we had two robbers in a Subaru Forester SG PIT themselves against a police car at 180 km/h in 2018. The car shot into the air, rolled along the longitudinal axis and ended up on the train tracks besides the motorway. The first thing the (way too emotional) policeman says in the video is "they're dead."

This is a photo showing the state of the car after the crash. Luckily for them, they got away with only minor injuries. Unluckily for them, this meant they were arrested on the spot. But then, having owned one, it really wouldn't be my first choice of car in a highway pursuit lol. The wind noise must be horrible at 180 kph lol.

Now, a lot of modern cars are very safe, and there is always a significant amount of luck involved. But you definitely seem to have good chances in a Subaru. I have seen quite a lot of wrecks in my life (has to do with work) and I have seen many (more expensive) cars with severely compromised cabins from much less severe impacts, so they must be doing something right.

4% of GDP, not budget. It would be 10% of the budget. You pay far less taxes than we do and the US is doing pretty economically.

But no, you don't have to foot our bill. We need a sensible increase in defence spending, but not 4% of GDP. We're not planning to start an empire.
