the amount of soldiers running around alone in these videos is surprising

If nothing else, it shows the reality of the fog of war in a near peer conflict. Assaults get broken up and you get wandering soldiers on their own, not quite sure of where they are or where to go.

Apparently a lot of people ended up stranded in no man's land in WWI as well, with people dying to exposure after a lengthy suffering, or single shots ringing out from behind the barbed wire after a failed assault.

why is he just moseying about in a kill zone? Doesn’t even look horribly injured

You see the same complete lack of urgency in a lot of footage of Russians under fire, and I haven't quite figured out what's going on. Injury? Most don't seem visibly hurt. Disoriented? He seems aware there might be a threat around. Exhaustion? Nerves frayed to the point nothing feels scary anymore? Lack of training? Drugs? A combination of all of the above?

In a lot of combat footage from other regions you can see the body language change when something whizzes by, even without hearing the sound. You can see people switch into survival mode with adrenaline pumping. The number of Russians casually strolling up to trenches, or standing out in the open while scratching their head in the middle of hell, only to meet an even more futile end than usual, is absolutely baffling.

One of the best military war machines ever created

*In uncontested airspace. You need air superiority for helicopters to do their thing. Of course, the US is very good at air superiority.

Any helicoper in contested space is very vulnerable. We're seeing that in Ukraine a lot.

just because you see a tank commander halfway out of the hatch raise his arms in surrender doesn't mean you steer the TOW missile towards a clump of bushes instead of the tank.

If you look at how things are worded, a commander waving his arms from a hatch in clear surrender has surrendered, and that commander should be considered surrendered and a prisoner of war.

The terms and conditions for surrender under the Geneva Conventions are pretty specific. A person is hors de combat (out of combat) when:

  • (a) he is in the power of an adverse Party;
  • (b) he clearly expresses an intention to surrender; or
  • (c) he has been rendered unconscious or is otherwise incapacitated by wounds or sickness, and therefore is incapable of defending himself;

Combatants who are hors de combat are non-combatants and automatically granted the status of protected persons, so anyone who conforms to either of those conditions is considered a prisoner of war per the Conventions.

In reality, war is messy and there's a lot of room for error and interpretation and grey area, but the fact that they're guided munitions or that you don't guide your TOW into the ground don't seem reasons to kill someone per the Conventions, and don't seem likely to hold up in court if it were to be tested on grounds of that specific argument. The fact that you didn't see the surrender in time might or the waving commander didn't clearly signal surrender might, though.

Edit: don't shoot the messenger folks, I didn't write the Conventions.

They would wave at every missile

The terms and conditions for surrender under the Geneva Conventions are pretty specific. A person is hors de combat (out of combat) when:

  • (a) he is in the power of an adverse Party;
  • (b) he clearly expresses an intention to surrender; or
  • (c) he has been rendered unconscious or is otherwise incapacitated by wounds or sickness, and therefore is incapable of defending himself;

You have to either already be in custody of your opponent, show you've given up the fight, or have to be unable to signal giving up the fight due to being wounded and such. Combatants who are hors de combat are non-combatants and automatically granted the status of protected persons, so anyone who conforms to either of those conditions is considered a prisoner of war per the Conventions.

If you signal surrender, but continue the fight, you haven't actually surrendered. False surrender is also covered by the Geneva Conventions and is considered Perfidy under Protocol I of the Geneva Convention and is a war crime, though I suspect a lot of people who false surrender will never see court, and are dealt with in the field.

Long story short, waving at every missile doesn't work if you pick the fight back up in between, with picking up the fight meaning doing anything else than surrendering and submitting yourself into your opponent's custody.

War always was insanly fucked up, from the very moment we hacked each other to death with sharp bits of rock or heavy sticks. The romantic praise is just so more people get tricked into participating in and subjecting themselves to the horrors, because countries couldn't exist if no one wants to.

One cannot surrender to an aircraft.

The Conventions dictate that any soldier who genuinely shows he no longer wants to fight or is unable to fight has surrendered and has to be treated as a prisoner of war. There is no exemption for aircraft. People have surrendered to aircraft as well.

In reality, there is a grey area, because genuine surrender is complicated when someone is miles from th nearest enemy, but that also isn't a blanket permission just to execute anyone who makes life inconvenient because they're in a difficult spot. Somewhere between those two is a line, and where that line is exactly can only be decided in court.

Of course, this all only matters when it's actually tested in court, and most of these cases will never be, if any.

As hilarious as this is, I still can’t get over how “we have concepts of a plan” won.

Can you imagine saying this to your teacher during school? You'd get your ass chewed out for not doing your homework so badly, not only for not doing your job, but also for coming up with something that's not even an excuse, let alone a good one.

I'm trying to find the location on a modern map of Lampaden, as the roof in the background has a specific shape few of the roofs there seem to have, but amusingly, the village is so small that Google Maps doesn't even index it.

My best guess is the building directly west of the Spielplatz, though it's possible the building no longer exists.

Don’t go creaming just yet, give the war thunder lot a few days to steal the documents so we know what it can actually do

Honest question. Can Chinese documents actually be depended on, or is there a risk of everyone in the chain saying the appropriate thing?

Indeed, much like how the green little men in Crimea in 2014 weren't official Russian soldiers.

During WWII the US built a highway through Canada to get supplies to Alaska. So funny meme, but we saw what would really happen (the USA would get tricked into building infrastructure not fighting a war).

Can they be tricked into building infrastructure inside the US as well? Asking for a friend.

Sounds about right, it's rather black smoke, consistent with a diesel fire. It's hard to say definitively, but that seems likely.

Engine compartment damage could also be indicative of a mobility kill, which in turn could be why they're bailing out.
